Should Marijuana be legalized?
There have been extensive debates regarding the legalization of marijuana, with different scientists having differing opinions. There is also a growing number of people who advocate for its legalization for several reasons, mostly related to health. Marijuana receives so much love from the general population but the legislators are reluctant to make it legal in most states. Does the government provide a specific reason for prohibiting its use, or does it just restrict it in order to keep making money from making arrests? Are the medical benefits related to the use of marijuana real or is it just a narcotic that is abused? This essay investigates the legalization of marijuana in relation to its positive and negative health effects.
According to Gardenier (116), nurses should not advocate for the legalization of marijuana due to its harmful effects. She states that the components of marijuana have not all be studied, which poses a danger to the health of the ones that use it. It also contains carcinogens and a psycho-altering pharmacologic ingredient that has a range of effects on a person’s cognition ranging from euphoria and relaxation to difficulty concentrating, altered problem solving and impaired thinking. There have also been documented imaging studies that revealed a smaller brain volume in people that were chronic marijuana users.
Another article by Leyton (75) claims that the continuous use of marijuana causes one to experience cognitive deficits and leads to dependence in roughly 15% of users. Chronic use is also associated with extended withdrawal effects and persisting cognitive and psychomotor impairments through abstinence periods. Additionally, early onset of psychotic disorders and exacerbation of bipolar disorders and deteriorating symptoms of PTSD have all been linked to Marijuana use (Karst, 4).
However, Leyton also states that there exists medical evidence that marijuana is effective in managing nausea, pain and allaying symptoms of multiple sclerosis (75). This is also mentioned by (Karst, 4) who states that cannabis has been beneficial in treating chronic pain, helping patients on chemotherapy to reduce symptoms such as nausea and vomiting and spasticity in Multiple Sclerosis. Therefore, it is impossible to ignore these beneficial health effects.
Most of these beneficial health effects have not been fully researched, therefore further studies are warranted. Due to the fact that medical marijuana is not standardized by the FDA, there are bound to be inconsistencies in the different products sold to patients and to other users. Since the legalization of marijuana is now a phenomenon with more people advocating for it, it is up to the FDA to ensure they regulate the use. Karst (4) states that medical marijuana prescribers and pharmacists have the responsibility of educating their patients regarding the side effects and potential adverse effects of use, as well as interactions with other drugs.
It is evident that the debate regarding the legalization of marijuana is not about to come to an end any time soon. However, the hard truth is that marijuana is already widely used even in prohibited states. It is the responsibility of the government to ensure that its citizens do not consume harmful substances by ensuring its regulation in both legal and illegal states. Healthcare professionals should also ensure they educate their patients regarding short and long term effects of use and potential drug interactions.
