I feel like I’ve spent a little too long on the grass in the foreground and the plants moving out to the back for me to then just paint the rest desert-brown... backgrounds are something I really need to work on.

The woman’s shading here feels off to me, but it was tricky because in my mind, she’s completely out of the light. Still, the torch and the fire glow on the wall around and behind it seem to look sort of good to me. I still haven’t decided if I want to use it again or not.

I still seem to struggle with metal and the way light reflects off of it, as you can painfully see on this knight’s chestplate.
Still, I feel like I’ve started to get better at drawing fire, especially seeing that I can remember years ago when I first attempted it, and it just sort of came out as a red blob.

Welp, with being quarantined for the next 4+ weeks, I’ve suddenly had a lot more time to draw and practice.
I was pretty proud of myself for this one, because I was finally able to get the anime hair shine looking good - something that I’ve struggled with greatly in the past.
Also, can I just say, hands are a pain to draw, and both of these required me holding my own hand in front of my face for far too long.

So, I’ve finally felt decent enough at drawing people that I attempted to draw my girlfriend. I think I did decently; especially if you zoom in on the details like the eyes and such, but she thinks it doesn’t quite look like her. Oh well, maybe next time.
Anyways, I also felt pretty good about this because I mostly got it done in one night, and had tried different drawing techniques on the hair, skin, and eyes, I think it looks better.

It’s been quite a while since I’ve posted something sadly, cause it’s the first time I’ve finished a piece probably since school started back up. I keep trying to bounce around different hobbies, while having like 5 active pieces all at the same time, so I finally buckled down and finished this one:
3 Lil Goblins, each off in their own lil’ goblin world. Aside from the painfully long arms on the top goblin, I felt like I did pretty well, and I’ve gotten goblins down... though, they’re not too hard to be honest, so back to people I guess.
I should also say: It’s finally been about one year since I started drawing seriously and regularly, so I also re-uploaded the very first pic I drew since getting back into art, and I’m pretty happy with how far I’ve come, and while my progress is slowing down a bit, I don’t think it’s stopping.

So, I know it’s a little late, but here’s a festive little $noblin the Goblin, or as I’ve started referring to him “the gobo” or “noblin”. He looks both so happy with his little Santa hat, but also a bit food-drunk, with his bulging tummy and hazy eyes.
I drew this little guy even faster than the previous one, I think under 3 hours total, which while that might still seem like a lot, I’m ridiculously slow at drawing, so any improvement in time for me is a big one. He does look a little rough around the edges in some places for my liking though.
Welp, that’s it for goblins for a bit I suppose...time to go back to those dreaded million flowers that I’ve thrown myself into. Maybe I’ll get that piece done in a month, but for now, i hope you enjoy lil’ $noblin.

Meet $noblin, the Goblin!
I was really proud of myself for starting and finishing this lil’ guy in one sitting, and probably under 3/4ish hours (I wasn’t counting), since it feels like I’m starting to get faster. Originally I was thinking about trying to make him into a gif, with his arms and body swaying back and forth, but looking into it more, animation seems like a dark hole that I don’t have the time for..
Still, he’s pretty fun to draw, so expect more of a slightly pump and mostly naked green boi, while I still try to forget about the flowers.

It had been a few weeks since I posted, so I decided to share an update on my progress with this picture: flowers were a mistake.
Oh man, were they a mistake. I never realized what a herculean task it would be to individually draw them by hand... granted, I am very proud of the flowers that I have drawn, and I think they look quite good, and I imagine it will look good when it’s finished...but that will be like, centuries from now.
I think I need a little break from drawing flowers, because as much as I want to lose my mind only working on this piece till it’s finished, I don’t.

The weary struggler deserves a rest.
Since I will be sucked up into the black hole that is finals soon, I thought I’d share this now. I plan on finishing it when I can - which will change this scene dramatically, since I envision the tree being a cherry blossom, rather than a dead one (though that fits Berserk better) -  but chances are that won’t be till the semester is out.
I spend wayyy too long on this man’s face, and it still looks off to me (I think it’s too long), though greatly improved from when I started. I really enjoy doing rough sketches, but for me, coloring is rather cathartic, despite the many many hours more that it takes.
Still! I hope you enjoy. Yet again, I feel like I’ve improved with every picture I drew. Perhaps when I hit my one year of practicing, I’ll post a progress comparison.
Have I mentioned just how much I like drawing in the style of Berserk, compared to other manga?

Sorry about making you scroll past this nightmare, but I had so much fun drawing it, I thought I’d share. One of my friends said that I should draw something for Reddit’s “r/I’msorryJon”, which is just Garfield turned into a nightmare basically.
Despite how grotesque it might look, I felt like I learned quite a bit from it, especially with the light glinting in some places, as this is still something I really struggle with. I’ll probably have to do a bit of a study for it when I get the time.
Still, I hope you enjoy it somewhat, and if you don’t maybe you’ll like the background I drew for it, minus the monster.

Taking what I learned from the last set of faces, I tried drawing a full piece/person as fast as I could, and low and behold, it works for some reason. I realize I got some of the proportions wrong (don’t look at his tiny hand or massive bicep please), and I didn’t spend as much time as I should have thinking about the colors and shading, but here I was mostly focusing on the face, and I think it’s my OC face so far!
In a way, it makes me glad to know that I can draw quickly and have it look alright, though I still wonder why. Regardless, I felt quite proud of this one, having been able to finish the black and white in one sitting, and then the color in another. Also, I need to work on my metal-gleam, especially since I want to incorporate swords and armor more, and this one looks rather matte...

After my most recent drawing, I almost felt upset with myself the longer I stared at it. I had spent so long, and worked so hard on it, only for it to feel as if something was just... off. Something was wrong, especially with the face, and I couldn’t place quite what.
Both my girlfriend and one of my close friends agreed: I was probably over-thinking it when I drew, and by spending more time, added more small mistakes. So, I decided to draw a series of faces as fast as I could, and here they are, each one drawn in less time than the last.
In my opinion, the first is the best, though I think that’s because she shows some sort of emotion, whereas the other two look like robots waiting to be turned on. However, they don’t look much worse than some of the decent faces I’ve managed to draw in the past, and I did it in a quarter, or less of the time. The last one, the red-head weird hair guy, I probably spent less then 20, maybe less than 15 minutes on, though if you look closely, this starts to show with how rough it is.
Still, it’s strange to think that the less time I spend drawing, the better it can look...

Finally, I found the time to finish another piece. This time, I decided to add something of a background - since that’s something I really need to get in the habit of.
I also tried different color/shading methods here. As you can see, one is full color (which I always enjoy and prefer, although it probably takes 5x longer than black and white), but in one black and white I used screen tone, while in the other I didn’t. Using the screen tone tool is so simple and looks decent, that I might end up using it more often.
Regardless, I think this is my best yet, and I certainly put in the time for that hope. It makes me sad that I can’t upload the massive original file, since I probably added unnecessary details that aren’t even visible, but oh well.
Also, with this piece, I finally feel like I understand that anime hair-shine, which is something that I’ve been struggling with a lot.

I feel like I’m creeping my way towards being comic/manga ready, but the speed at which I’m learning has definitely started to slow down. Still though, with each character, I try to correct issues that I had with the last, but each time, no matter how many issues I notice, it still feels like something is missing. Maybe that something is just years of practice though.
I left off the coloring with this one, and wow did it save a lot more time than I realized, and still turned out looking alright, though the color would have added something.

Two sketches that I worked on this week. I had been working on a bigger piece for a while, but every time I would “step back” (zoom out) to look it, it just felt wrong and off, and I decided that I needed to practice a little more first. Plus, with my sudden lack of free time to do anything, sketches are much more manageable
As you (hopefully) can tell, the man is Guts from Berserk: I was coping a picture for this one, but trying to learn from it while I did, specifically on head shape, and mapping the features on it. I then took what I practiced, and put it to my own sketch; the woman. I sort of imagine her taking a selfie, with the way her arm and head are positioned.
While far from perfect, I managed to make the eyes on her look a bit better, and not as pasted onto the face, as I felt my previous pieces had. Also, her hair doesn’t look like garbage, so that was a plus too, since eyes and hair are what I’ve been struggling most with lately.
