i’ve made and drafted 3 separate posts abt it bc i was talking about it too much but i will break my silence now bc i think i can be concise. supernatural. 2 nonhuman characters were born and aged unnaturally quickly and became, functionally, adults. one of them was given sexual tension with an adult male character and it physically payed off as soon as she had a passably adult body. the other one sparked a controversy over wether he should be allowed to drink a beer with parental supervision. guess which of the two mentioned characters was a woman

there's this one reaction channel on youtube where one of the guys watching supernatural for the first time kept theorizing that sam's powers were angelic (he also thought sam was going to die and come back as an angel). and it's insane to me how easily the audience recognizes sam as innocent and his powers as something helpful and potentially good, even thinking they're angelic in this case, while most characters in the show treated him like shit for them. except missouri and ruby, nobody was ever supportive of him; either outright condemning him as evil, ignoring the fact that the powers were something he was infected with, or acting like he was a ticking time bomb and it would only be a matter of time before he'd go darkside. it's so heartbreaking.

what i think a lot of people don’t get about sam’s motivations in s4 is that. he lost dean. saw him get torn open right in front of him and couldn’t do anything to stop it couldn’t save his brother. and yeah, dean comes back. and that is the only reason sam ever smiles again. the only reason sam lives. because he didn’t want to survive killing lilith, not even in lucifer rising after he’s sure he’s driven away dean for good. because sam doesn’t want to live without dean. he lost him, and just because dean came back doesn’t mean he didn’t still watch him die. just because dean’s alive again doesn’t mean sam didn’t watch him die. sam literally goes mad with grief. dean comes back but sam still has to live with that grief. still has to deal with it and he continues to do that same way he did when dean was dead, by holding on to his anger to drown out everything else. there are other reasons too of course. his shame and guilt about not being able to save dean. but my point is, s4 sam is still grieving. he’s grieving the loss of the one person he loves more than anything else. even when he comes back he can’t talk about it can’t deal with it because there’s 40 years and 4 months between them and they both changed irrevocably in that time and neither could understand what the other went through.

sam can’t possibly grasp what dean had been through. but dean can’t fathom what happened to sam because he truly expected him to heal and move on from his death. because he doesn’t really know (or believe) how much sam loves him, i don’t think either of them did. dean is so integral to sam, tied inside to his very core and when he died all of a sudden sam didn’t care anymore about anyone or anything, himself included. sam who has spent 3 seasons up until then (and in some ways his whole life) scared of turning monstrous runs towards monstrosity and evil with open arms to escape that pain and the prospect of living without dean. and i think fandom and dean himself would have an easier time sympathising with sam and his actions in s4 if they realised that it stems from his grief. of course we don’t have it rubbed in our noses because sam himself is running from that hurt, doesn’t want to face it, especially now that dean’s back because what’s even the point of the pain then? there are other factors and motivations but the heart of it is just that. he loves dean and he lost him and he lost a huge part of himself along with him. one of them came back and the other didn’t.
