On July 25, 1946, a horrifying incident unfolded involving two young African American couples: George Dorsey and his pregnant wife, Mae Murray, along with Roger Malcom and his wife, Dorothy Malcom. They were in the car of their employer, Loy Harrison, who was driving them home. However, their journey took a grim turn when they encountered a mob of white individuals blocking off Moore's Ford bridge in Georgia.
The situation escalated quickly as the two men were forcibly pulled from the car and subjected to a brutal beating. In a tragic turn of events, one of the women recognized a member of the mob, leading to both women being dragged from the vehicle and tied to a tree beside their husbands. All four victims were then shot dead. To further compound the horror, Mae Murray had her fetus forcibly removed from her body.
Despite the murders occurring in broad daylight, the killers were never apprehended. One potential motive emerged when it was revealed that earlier in the month, Roger Malcom had allegedly stabbed a white man named Barnette Hester. Malcom was released on bail, a sum paid by his employer, Loy Harrison.
The lack of justice in this case underscores the deeply rooted racial tensions and systemic failures prevalent during that era, as well as the tragic consequences borne by innocent lives caught in the crossfire of prejudice and violence.

Mary Ellen Wilson was an American girl whose child abuse inflicted at the hands of her foster parents, led to the creation of the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. She was beat and locked in a cupboard by her foster parents. Note the cuts and bruising on the photo above. The other image shows the small, messy, apartment she was confined to.

18-year-old Sarah McKinley from Oklahoma had recently just been made a widow and single mother when her husband sadly passed from cancer on Christmas Day of 2012. The following week a man by the name of Justin Martin arrived at her door, claiming he was a new neighbour wanting to introduce himself. She did not allow him into the house.
A few days later, Martin arrived at McKinley’s door once again. This time he was with another man and was carrying a large hunting knife. The two men knocked on the door and, for obvious reasons, McKinley would not allow the men to enter. They began to force their way into her home where McKinley was with her young baby. Fearing for their life, McKinley armed herself with a 12-gauge shotgun and a pistol, hid in the bedroom and called 911.
While on the phone, she asked if she was allowed to shoot the intruder to which dispatch replied, “You have to do whatever you can to protect yourself.” She then shot and killed one of the intruders while the other fled. The shooting was ruled justifiable.

Luis Alvarez was one of the first responders on the scene at the World Trade Centers on 9/11. He spent weeks at Ground Zero searching for survivors and human remains. In 2016, he was diagnosed with colorectal cancer that had spread to his liver. He was one of thousands who developed cancer in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. The first responders breathed in pulverized dust that contained cement, asbestos, lead, glass fibers, dioxins and other chemicals. He died in 2019 at just 53-years-old.

“Unfinished Painting” — Keith Haring
This painting was left intentionally incomplete. Haring began it when he was dying due to complications from AIDS, and knew he didn’t have much time left. The piece represents the incomplete lives of him and many others, lost to AIDS during the crisis.

“AIDS Memorial Quilt” — Multiple
This quilt is over 50 tons heavy, and one of, if not the, largest pieces of community folk art. Many people who died of AIDS did not receive funerals, due to social stigma and many funeral homes refusing to handle the deceased’s remains, so this was one of the only ways their lives could be celebrated. Each panel was created recognition of someone who died due to AIDS, typically by that person’s loved ones.

“Untitled” — Felix Gonzalez-Torres
This pile of candy weighs the same amount as an average adult man. Visitors are encouraged to take some of the candy. As they do so, the pile of candy weighs less and less. This is a commentary on how AIDS deteriorates the body of those who have it, as Gonzalez-Torres’ partner, Ross Laycock, had died due to AIDS-related complications that same year.

The SF Gay Men's Chorus
This photo was taken in 1993. The men in white are the surviving original members. Every man in black is standing in for an original member who lost their lives to AIDS.

“Electric Fan (Feel it Motherfuckers); Only Unclaimed Item from the Stephen Earabino Estate, 1997” — John Boskovich
After the death of his lover, Stephen Earabino, from AIDS, Boskovich discovered that his family had completely cleared his room, including Boskovich’s own possessions, save for this fan. An entire person, existence and relationship had been erased, just like so many lives during the AIDS crisis. Boskovich encased the fan in Plexiglass, but added cutouts so that its air may be felt by the viewer, almost like an exhalation. In a sense, restoring Earabino’s breath.

“Blue” — Derek Jarman
This was Jarman’s final feature film, released four months before his death from AIDS-related complications. These complications had left him visually impaired, able to only see in shades of blue. This film consists of a single shot of a saturated blue color, as the soundtrack to the film described Jarman’s life through narration, intercut with the adventures of Blue, a humanization of the color blue. The film's final moments consist of a set of repeated names: “John. Daniel. Howard. Graham. Terry. Paul". These are the names of former lovers and friends of Jarman who had died due to AIDS.

“Untitled” (Perfect Lovers) — Felix Gonzalez-Torres
Created by the same man who created the previous untitled piece, this piece was also inspired by his lover’s deterioration and death due to AIDS. This piece consists of two perfectly alike clocks. Over the course of time, one of the clocks will fall out of sync with the other.
In a letter written to his lover about the piece, before his lover’s passing, Gonzalez-Tourres wrote, “Don't be afraid of the clocks, they are our time, the time has been so generous to us. We imprinted time with the sweet taste of victory. We conquered fate by meeting at a certain time in a certain space. We are a product of the time, therefore we give back credit were it is due: time. We are synchronized, now forever. I love you.”

People complain about how if McDonald’s paid their employees more, they’d charge us more for food and those same people haven’t said a word when McDonald’s dramatically increased their prices over the past few years all while not increasing their employees pay by much at all
