January 2024
Long and cold but sunny except for when it was raining or foggy. Waiting. Wasting. Staying in bed too long on Saturdays and Sundays. Too much falling into tumblr, instagram, and YouTube holes. Very scattered, but some discipline in staying off social media after 8pm, yoga almost every day, cooking meals, some mindfulness.
Film
Water Lilies directed by Céline Sciamma (ohh man. It felt like This One Summer, and it made me so happy to have survived being a teen girl.)
Screen Tests by Kate Zambreno (a book of film criticism, essays, musings, tiny fictions…recognized more of the philosophers and writers than directors and actors, but it felt good for my brain, references from pivotal learning eras in my life coming together. A bit Rebecca Solnit, a bit Maggie Nelson, a bit Kyo Maclear, if any of them wrote more about the movies. (A heap of Leanne Shapton, perhaps!))
Music
“Pressure to Party” by Julia Jacklin
“Sports” by Beach Bunny
“Map On A Wall” by Lucy Dacus
Crafts
A big sparkly dragon collage that I taped to my wall and worked on all month
Embroidering bows and fish and houses and circles onto my gray cardigan
Knitting pink striped socks
Paint chip Lunar New Year / Valentine’s tiny dragons
Cozy cat collages for Paper JAM January art challenge
Inspiration
Heavy on the comics: Linnea Sterte, Jillian Tamaki, Jade Armstrong, Lucie Bryon, Maia Kobabe
Charlotte Parent
Ulrike Lea Moormann (colors, shapes, houses, knitting, clothing, ceramics)
Food / Drink
Lemon ginger tea
Corn mochi

Omg I love the idea of painting the covers if the books you read, I might try that myself this year!
Also how did you like the graphic novel Juliette?
Yes! Go for it! I stole the idea from Lizzy Stewart.
I really enjoyed Juliette! It's fun and absurd, and I loved the art (especially the shifts into still lifes without the hard pen outlines) and the focus on small details. It's a pretty subtle and quiet book overall, which I appreciate a lot in graphic novels. It reminded me quite a bit of the movie Amélie, so if you liked that, I think you'll enjoy Juliette.
