my favorite part of the mdzs novel really is when jgy and lxc have to lay out for wwx that lwj is in love with him and he immediately tries to just leave the plot and find him because they need to kiss RIGHT NOW and jgy is like? i'm monologuing and literally holding you hostage you're not allowed to just leave? and wwx is like no you don't understand i need him to know that i love him too!! and jgy is like no i get it i'm literally the one that just laid all that out for you but you're still very much a hostage actually

You've probably heard by now, but from March 4th to 10th 2024, Help Gaza Children will be sending all their donations to families in northern Gaza, where food prices have skyrocketed even more than in the south. Their goal is $25K by the end of the week; at the time of writing this post, it's about halfway there! (OG post about it)

I'm never going to be over Hensheng and how unhinged a weapon it is even though the perceptions of it (for people who even seem aware it exists) is basically just. Soft sword. Sword but cringe fail edition. Floppy -

Oh btw it can grapple (?) and shatter powerful weapons and this is public knowledge.

Idk dude. The translators note described it as similar to an Urumi so I looked that up and. Personally even in a world full of vengeful ghosts and magic weapons if I saw that coming towards me I would experience the fear of god under my ass telling me to run -

But specifically. So. Urumis are the closest real world weapon I've been able to find to how novel! Hensheng works and apparently functions. As in. Metal whip with either one long or several very thin blades.

Between that and the guqin string JGY just has a thing for thin deadlier than it appears bits of twisty metal threads and that's so perfect for him but Hensheng specifically right.

The "sword". It's like. A blade whip basically? That can (in my head based on the description) either twist around the swords it shatters or maybe it splits up into multiple blades momentarily to grab stuff it slices into tiny pieces. Like a very sharp kraken.

Do you see why the imagery drives me insane.

But ok. So. The thing about urumis/closest real world equivalent is that yes they are and were used in combat but now it's mostly ceremonial or sparring but the point is they're not very good for fighting in actual battles or close range or anything. Straightforward.

You'll probably kill your enemies and your allies and anything near you, it's a giant knife whip, you also have to be really fucking skilled and controlled w/your movements to not kill yourself with it.

So Hensheng is

1- An incredibly good self defense weapon, specifically, ideal for fighting off multiple combatants at once, but not designed for traditional warfare or more direct combat. It's a weapon that assumes the defensive by it's nature.

- specifically assumes the wielder will be alone, without allies nearby, so much so that it becomes more hindrance than help if that's the case.

- personal bubble/get away at all costs/cut anything that gets close whether you meant to or not weapon. Remind you of anyone. AAAAAH.

2- Can be hidden as a belt and doesn't have a scabbard typically. At the same time. Is virtually impossible to get taken away from you. Or specifically turned against you. Even someone who manages to grab it? Or get close (the thing it's best at preventing) is highly unlikely to be able to use it against you, one of the greatest risks with bringing a weapon into any situation that could become a fight. Self defense that can't be turned against you and can be fully concealed until necessary.

3- Requires! An extremely high level of technical skill, but little brute strength (it's not very heavy) but still. Strength. You have to control the momentum, and do this by being very controlled and practiced with your movements and awareness of everything in the environment and thinking multiple steps ahead all the time so you can control and don't loose the momentum, or the sword stops working just like a whip.

Again. Remind you of anyone.

Like I know all the cultivator weapons represent the wielder somehow and perhaps this is obvious but I hadn't thought it through till now and I'm having feelings about it.

Specifically. What it reinforces about JGYs goals and relationship to having a weapon. And self defense and allies and combat and his environment and physical movement and control. HhhHH.

so am I the only one who finds it fucking hilarious that because JGY knew in detail the absolute mess that happened in Yi City (he talks about it at the temple), the most plausible scenario is that Xue Yang - who JGY likely had ordered to be killed and likely BELIEVED WAS DEAD FOR SEVERAL YEARS - just rocks up back at Koi Tower like "hey man no hard feelings, can you help me resurrect a guy?" and it's doubly funny that he does then have to explain, "yeeeeaahhh I done fucked up and fell in love with a guy who I then accidentally drove to suicide? 😬🤷🏻‍♂️ you remember him, the bright moon and gentle breeze, that gorgeous folk hero guy? yeah, him. yeeeah."
