Tenoch Huerta on why the idea that “hard work always reaps its rewards” isn’t true. Talent and hard work alone doesn’t guarantee entry into certain spaces (you’ll always be sidelined even when you’re included), but it will determine your longevity once you force your way in.

Something in her makes me gentle. Makes me shy. Makes me strong. Makes me happy to be alive. And maybe that’s it, maybe that’s what it really comes down to. She makes me. Makes me whole. She completes me. So, here’s the thing, God… I know I complain a lot, and I know that you and me we’ve got issues, but right now, just for tonight… Thank you for her. Thank you.

My point is, I fell in love with Petey the science-nerd who lived with his aunt! Spidey-the-dashing-hero was an unexpected bonus!

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but there’s no deadline for the things you do in life outside of societal expectation. it may feel like there is, but there really isn’t. there’s no set time frame to finish anything. you don’t have to have x, y, or z accomplished by a certain time. there is no countdown. you can graduate high school a year later than you intended. you don’t have to be done with college by 22. you don’t have to buy a house by 26. you don’t have to achieve all your goals before you’re 30. you don’t have to get married just because everyone else is. you don’t have to have children before you’re ready. you can wait. you can try again later. you can finish some other time. and it’s okay if you do: everyone has different timelines, different paths. what is right for someone else may not be right for you. just because someone else did something by whatever age, doesn’t mean you are a failure if you don’t. just because you don’t meet a milestone when you think you’re supposed to, doesn’t mean you never will. there’s not an expiration date. be patient with yourself, give yourself some grace. slow down.
i think society’s obsession with productivity will be our downfall, it’s unrealistic. you don’t need to be productive every minute of the day. your body needs rest. it’s not natural to stay “grinding” or “hustling”. please don’t feel guilty about taking care of your body and taking a break when you need one.
