One of my absolute favorite parts of working with neurodivergent kids comes when the class is singing a song together.
The confusion on the ND kids’ faces as they try to work out how all of us can be doing the same thing together, seemingly without prompting. Suddenly we’re all saying the same thing, in the same voice, moving our hands or bodies in the same way. We don’t tell each other what to do. We just do it, and it’s weird. Maybe a little eerie.
But then their confusion and disquiet ease. Their faces soften into pure wonder. All these little, chaotic bodies that bounce around without rhyme or reason the rest of the time, have become a single, cohesive unit. A tiny spark of order in the universe.
And then - AND THEN! - when the ND kids finally figure out the secret, and they can finally join in. They get to be a part of the Itsy Bitsy Spider or the ABCs. The joy there!
That’s my favorite part.

They asked me if I care about you, a million memories passed through my mind and I said no longer.
