Archive for the January 7, 2021 special Without a Roof segment. It's a fast paced and hard hitting expose featuring a near mirror of the houseless interviews Natalie Hanson-Ross captured for her Sunday ChicoER article titled "Homeless in Chico, campers await orders to leave Bidwell Park." Featuring on location interviews with houseless campers, samaritans giving out money on New Years Day, and comments and insights from Addison Winslow and Lincoln who have been providing mutual aid support to the houseless since the pandemic started. An interview with Hanson concludes the Without a Roof segment as we discuss the dire situation for the houseless, including domestic violence and the prevalence of abuse and assaults against woman, indoors and out.

Without a Roof — The final post, by Bill (Guillermo Mash)
https://woaroof.tumblr.com
"The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off[6]-- Gloria Steinem
Never under estimate the power of gratitude and the inherent goodness of people. Always act like a human being knowing kindness is the highest form of intelligence. Do these things and you can go anywhere: caution is seldom misguided, fear most often is.
Tell the story[1], and be an agent for change[2]. Embrace mutual aid[3] and accompaniment[4]. Practice unknowing; bearing witness and alleviating suffering[5].
Get outside your comfort zone and be proximate to the issue. Change the frame, and be hopeful[0]
If you have a roof be grateful...

[6] Truth is, the system isn't broken it's working exactly as intended marginalizing large swaths of Americans based on gender, skin color, sexual preference, country of origin and economic status. We just need to tweak the system my ass.
True this: stop parroting the mantra of connecting people to services! The system has compartmentalized an intentionally crippled triage model as a way to hoodwink the public into believing the destitute just need to connect to these fragmented and woefully underfunded systems and redemption is theirs. It's bull crap for the masses. Propped up by the small number of people that climb a rung on the infamous ladder -- from surviving under a bridge to living in a dingy apartment in the gentrified side of town.
Be true to yourself by taking charge of your story, be it personal, group or organization centric. Storytelling is how we build a coalition based on trust and understanding. Poetry, verse, song, visuals, audio, photography, art pieces, Et al. Engulf yourself with the characters and setting you need for a happy ending and tell it like it is. Just be sure it's honest, engrossing and gathers passionate people spreading love where there is darkeness and peace where there is struggle. Kindness is the highest form of intelligence. So be smart.” — Without a Roof

“Tell on em. Tell all that you know about the racism. Tell people that the racism is unconstitutional. That it's deadly. To me racism and murder is in the same class. Cause when you hate something so much that you murder it, and put a justification on it. It doesn't make it hate it makes it murder." -- Belva Newsom, family matriarch of the Butler-McGriff family, January 2016
A Guillermo Mash reading of Hijinks or Hate[1] by Ken Smith, published Febuary 12, 2015 in the Chico News & Review
"Stop being afraid to speak-up. That's why we are having these problems now, because nobody speaks up, nobody fights against it. Nobody does anything, it's almost as if it's the norm here. When I mentioned it out here, when it first happened, a lot of the citizens who were from this area acted as though this was normal." -- Kelly Butler-McGriff, January 2016
Guillermo Mash interviews Belva Newsom and Kelly Butler-McGriff for the January 8, 2016 edition of the KZFR Peace and Social Justice Show
“16 shots, SIXTEEN SHOTS.” — Aramenta Hawkins, past Executive Director of the Chico Peace & Justice Center recounts the Desmond Phillips shooting at Chico City Council, in April of 2016.
"Desmond was a kind young man. He was a loving young man. He was very religious. He has a very-very strong bond with the Lord. He's a very humble kid. No criminal record. No violence with that kid. He was just a humble kid. Loved everyone and would feed the homeless." — David Phillips, father of Desmond Phillips, who was gunned down by Chico Police in March of 2017 in the family living room.
Dave Waddell, News Director at ChicoSol.org interviews David Phillips. As aired on the premier of The Chico Vibe on KZFR 90.1FM in May of 2017.
SURJ Butte County member Erica Casty Traverso on PTSD and the use of deescalation techniques and Rain Aliza Scher on what SURJ Butte County stands for, and how to get involved. As aired on the Chico Vibe, May of 2017.

Sandwiched between the bread are two “roses” for truth, CN&R Arts Devo Jason Cassidy and Paul “Fing” Boden, the author of House Keys not Handcuffs. "I'm concerned that people are camping within 50-feet of the creek and I don't think the city is going to want to put up with it for very much longer. We need a campground. We need a place that's safe. We need a place that's run by the people who are living there and they can get back on their feet." -- John Howlett responding to the houseless shelter in place situation in Annie's Glen for the Without a Roof radio program.

"It has been. It really has been. We're coming together, a little bit, and watching each other's back, cooperating with one another instead of trying to fight one another on a regular basis." Richard Muenzer on how Annie's Glen is as clean and safe as it's been in the eight years Without a Roof has been in Chico. "To deprogram and to look at racism in Chico is a long term project. It really can't be changed by a protest, or some kind of phenomenal moment. We really all need to reprogram ourselves and to do that we need to do those infrastructural changes." -- Ali Meders-Knight
