Some good things

So I bashed the movie somewhat in my previous post. But y'know what it has some stuff I like!!

Like the fact that adrien takes up a good chunk of the movie, and has his own time to expand on his family and the confrontation with his dad etc

I'm remembering the s5 finale and you know what movie adrien and chat noir get more screen time than the final 3 episodes, but hopefully that was a given

Gabriel is written more like a father, who doesn't know he's hurting kids, less controlling, is more disheveled, distraught, better!

You need to kill a villain before the akuma pops out of their *body*? Funky!

When you get a message your miraculous beeps. This makes so much communicating sense. It just does. Every time in the show someone's looking for the other partner and they're spamming messages and I just think - what's the point they won't get it anyway. But they do here!! Though its funny how adrien is like the more you're away the more they yearn for you and that's the most accurate chat noir irresponsibility trait I've seen.

Also tikki told marinette to work on her cat puns and I was scared for two minutes that they were going to re-characterise ladybug to be the one making the puns and I was horrified

Back to bashing it. Why no lucky charms :(

So I wrote some notes while I was watching the miraculous movie. (I didn't intend to watch it today, I was looking for something to watch and was pleasantly surprised to see it popped up on Netflix.)

With absolutely no further context, here are my notes.

Oh it's about Emilie except she's literally dead and there's no preserving pod or anything

Some final thoughts. The animation is stunning. As an animator myself I found myself admiring the beauty of the rendering very often. So the movie did this fantastically well.

But the script overall is lacking. Watermelon is a fun joke. Flea bag is a funny new nickname. But none of their interactions sound endearing or even natural. The delivery was so flat.

I understand that there are troubles in condensing a five season show into a movie. But similar to how they adapted the lightning thief into a movie, my thoughts are the same: if you're not going to do it justice don't do it at all.

There are many bits of the movie that I love, thematically, aesthetically; tHE KOREAN MOVE that playfulness was the only thing that made me feel they had chemistry. I liked their initial meeting, stumbling into each other; but every interaction after that made ladybug- marinette (oops spoilers jk) feel like a wishy washy character who can't decide between being annoyed or insecure. And even the annoyance is just so terribly expressed, its hard to tell what's genuine and what's playful. Every eye roll is accompanied with a smirk or a smile, so it feels like she doesn't mean what she says when she tells him to stop.

Also, when chat noir first falls in love with ladybug.... It doesn't feel that impactful. Like that scene of being in awe.. What are you in awe of? Vs the show scene where he witnesses her be impossibly brave, purifying like a billion butterflies at once and then essentially declaring war on hawkmoth and pledging herself to be the hero of Paris... Like that's awe inspiring. Speaking of, what happened to the gargoyle unpurified ladybug??

I've waited so many years for this movie and the aesthetics are stunning but. The delivery is just.. The script.. Aiii. And also Fu is portrayed as this more ominious crazy old man when he's supposed to be a kind old man! Though I do like that plagg and tikki are the ones who pick their holders.

The s5 Finale?

One thing. Where is my boy Adrien. Man got like 1 minute of screentime, not even? I went back to check. It’s a little over 1 minute. Roughly a minute and 12 secs. MA BOY HAD 4%!!!!!! OF THE FINAL EP!!!! WHAT! NOT EVEN 5%!!

Hang on. If they just essentially told Marinette that Felix and Adrien are sentimonsters, then wouldn’t Marinette put two and two together, that Gabriel is Monarch? Because,,,, the whole possession of the Peacock mircaulous and stuff??? Isn’t there larger implications??? OR IS THAT GIVING OUR DUM DUM CHARACTERS TOO MUCH CREDIT? im not really sure with this one.

There are only 2 times I’ve ever wanted to break a glass with my pure angry grip of total distain and fury.

1: When a close friend openly ridiculed me in my class group chat and everyone was laughing. 2: coNFRONTATION EP ,BCSWHAT ????? IN THE PURE EVIL?>??? I GET THAT THIS IS A GOOD THING, A SHOW MAKING YOU FEEL STRONG EMOTIONS BUT IVE NEVER FELT AS MURDEROUS AS WHEN NUMBER 1 HAPPENED LIKE I AM REPLAYING. I’d be damn angry too. If I decided to have an outburst on how my father shouldn’t have let my sister go and that she was brainwashed by an authoritative power, I wouldn’t do it in front of the whole class. I don’t know if it’s cuz of Chinese culture, but he is making his family lose so much ‘face’. Like fr this cant wait till you’re at home? And isn’t this a completely stupid choice anyway, considering Jalil knows Alix’s classmates are gawking over the photos, view her as a superheroine on a noble quest just like everyone else, even more so because they KNEW her and MISS her too and she’s their classmate; of course they’d not agree with what he’s saying. He just put a target on his back? Like what were the odds of him, what, coming out of this outburst having changed some minds? Setting himself up for failure. But fr, he had to yell right in front of her classmates? So, of course her classmates (ft, marinette) back up her decision and Alix’s dad.

And, no homeboy, what ARE you doing to get Alix back???? No, seriously, because all he did was listen to negative comments and form conspiracy theories. How does that help get Alix back at all??

Also, someone else pointed this out; wouldn’t Adrien literally see it? If we count the previous bits as animation errors, that necklace should’ve been dangling the whole time. SO....... with the current trend of referencing obscure moments in future episodes and having them actually have an impact, I would absolutely love for this to be mentioned somewhere.

Also..

I hope Adrien is now paying attention to Marinette since he likes her so much and takes note of every detail about her, including this-yet again- obscure fact. How great would it be that he later down the line suggests a date idea being to give each other extra history assignments-

ESPECIALLY since goldilocks sure seems to know a good amount of random obscure historical facts.

The hourglass went down by that much in just 2 seconds.

Hear me ouwt. It went down by 1 ‘real’ cm within 2 seconds. So 1cm/2s.

By the time she finished saying this, 3 seconds have passed. Lets say the bit where Monarch is having his evil monologue, is time overlapped with her coming up with a solution.

Between the time right after Pharaoh speaks and this scene,

23 seconds have passed. Plus the 3 seconds from earlier.. thats 26, so.. Hourglass should’ve gone down by 13 cm.

There are many amazing parts of this episode but the HANDS DOWN FUNNIEST is how we get a direct jump cut to Adrien in his room and Plagg just going ‘BLEGH! here you go’ looking all proud as if there wasn’t spit coming out of his mouth-

And I know the current trend of memes is making fun of how Plagg was so disgusted he threw up a kwagamata, but like this is so exciting!!! The implications! Its so fitting for Plagg to not have a special occasion ready and just randomly YEET a kwagamata (which is very important to any holder really), unannounced. Just so fitting.
