Wrap-Up Post + Non-Virtual Collection Picture
I’ve come to the end of my 30-day journey! Thanks for following along with all of the things that I’ve consumed in this past month. If this is the first post you’re reading, you’ll notice that I broke each post up into different kinds of consumption: goods/services, digital media, learning, food and occasionally misc.
Now that I’ve completed all of my recordings, here is a collection of physical items that I have. A few items were thrown out or purchased digitally so I didn’t get a receipt for them. The rest of my collection is digital so you’ll see 1-2 pictures per daily post on here.

Day 30 - February 20th, 2021
Today is the last day of my 30-day journal! In my next post, I’ll add a picture of all of my collected receipts and a few final thoughts and connections to class!
GOODS/SERVICES: Although I didn’t end up buying anything (my roommate found lots of good stuff though), I went shopping at the Saver’s just outside of St. Anthony. There were racks upon racks of clothing, which took us nearly an hour and a half to get through. This made me think about the fashion industry, more specifically, the fast fashion industry. For me, going to a thrift store is a shrine to fast fashion. This cycle of buy and dispose and buy and dispose all piles up to show a massive cultural issue with consumerism. I consumed gas in the process of driving to the store and back. Additionally I used my monthly subscriptions of Spotify, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
DIGITAL MEDIA: I recently found out that one of my roommates hasn’t watched my favorite movie of all time - Fantastic Mr. Fox - which meant immediate action was needed. So tonight we are watching it. I’m so excited! Other than that, I went on Instagram today and scrolled through my feed for a few minutes. I also looked through some of my suggested accounts to follow and an account called @cheapnordichouses popped up. Scrolling through their page I instantly fell in love with nearly every single house. I love great craftsmanship and attention to detail in houses, so this was heaven for me. I spent about 30 minutes going through this page specifically. I also watched an episode of the Great British Baking Show.
LEARNING: I finished up my journals today and took pictures of my non-digital collection. Otherwise, I gave myself a day off of homework!
FOOD: For breakfast I had the last piece of my cranberry orange bread...FINALLY! I loved every bite of it, but a week straight of that for breakfast was a lot. For lunch, I made Black bean soup (lots extra to freeze as well). I’m having soup again for dinner with some of my white bread toasted. Dessert will be some of my mom’s cookies that came in the mail today!
While writing this I listened to: Daniel Caesar’s album, “Case Study 01”

Day 29 - February 19th, 2021
GOODS/SERVICES: Today I bought a few things at the Dinkytown Target. The trek over took me on the campus connector, dropped me off at Folwell and from there I walked to Target. The walk was great because it is finally warming up! Here is what I bought:
Olives 2 @ $2.99 each
Cheez-It $2.89
Tortillas $3.29
Tea $3.29
Chocolate Chips 2 @ $3.59 each
Bread Flour $4.49
Flour $2.39
Cane Sugar $1.99
Brown Sugar $1.99
Powdered Sugar $1.99
Eggs $2.99
Cheese Block 2 @ $2.39 each
Shredded Cheese $2.39
Cream Cheese $2.19
TOTAL w/ tax: $55.85
As I walked through the store, I found myself thinking about my $2 splurge and our weekly class readings. Like in Jack Witt’s article, I easily saw how the store really is catered towards the needs of college students. With the candy right next to the checkout, the curated choices of items that only a college student would like and the extensive alcohol collection for such a small store, it is marketed perfectly for this type of consumer. Noticing these small details made me feel like I had a completely different shopping experience this time around.
DIGITAL MEDIA: While I was on the bus today, I watched the Great British Baking Show because my mom (who I’m watching with) got further ahead of me. I also listened to a new playlist that one of my friends made while I was walking around. I love hearing new music, so this was fun for me! I saved a few songs and added them to my own playlist.
LEARNING: After a pretty hectic Thursday, I didn’t do much homework today.  I caught up on my journals in the morning and spent the afternoon throwing cups and bowls for my ceramics class.
FOOD: Breakfast was more cranberry orange bread (almost a week in a row now). Lunch was vegetable tacos before I went out to run my errands. Dinner was more tacos and some potato oven fries. I also ate lots of chocolate throughout the day, courtesy of my birthday and Valentine’s day!
MISC: I’ve noticed that after so much activity during the week, I tend to take my Fridays to refocus and catch up which means working at a slower pace.
While writing this I listened to: Gregory Alan Isakov’s album, “That Sea, The Gambler”
Here are my bags from the store back on the Campus Connector (my backpack was full of stuff too):

Day 28 - February 18th, 2021
GOODS/SERVICES: I did not buy anything today but I used the campus connector and my basic subscriptions of Spotify, Netflix, and the Adobe Suite.
DIGITAL MEDIA: I emailed back and forth with a local elementary school about potentially shadowing a classroom teacher. I had to do a lot of school work today so I didn’t go on social media, and I saved all of my other texts and emails to respond to at night time. After I finished all my work and classes my roommates and I winded down by watching two episodes of Fleabag which is one of my all-time favorite shows. This is one of those shows that I’ve watched several times over, but I never regret rewatching it.
LEARNING: In Text and Image, we had a workshop day where we created interesting combinations of...Text and Image...which was fun! I spent the afternoon finishing up my $2 splurge essay for submission and submitting my business cards. It felt so good to finally finish up on two larger projects and I was proud of the work that I did.
FOOD: I still had leftovers for food today. Breakfast was cranberry orange and banana bread. Lunch was TikTok pasta. Dinner was a cheese and tomato sandwich with the bread I baked on Tuesday. Something that I’ve noticed while documenting my food consumption patterns is that I rarely buy processed foods other than white bread and the occasional Cheese Itz. Due to the high prices of processed foods at Fresh Thyme and Dinkytown Target, these are items that I have learned to avoid and that’s a consumption habit that I appreciate. I have not mentioned this in here, because it isn’t an odd part of my life to me, but you may have noticed that I don’t eat meat. As a vegetarian, I think it is important to note that I consume a balanced diet that allows me to feel strong, energized and happy!
While writing this I listened to: Arcade Fire’s album, “The Suburbs”

Day 27 - February 17th, 2021
GOODS/SERVICES: I met with my advisor today, which I’m considering both a service of the University and a service from her to me. I’ve decided that I will be switching my major next fall, which will be a big change. My advisor and everyone else in the transfer application process has been so helpful to me and I’m so grateful to be making a smooth transition to my new college. Otherwise, I used my basic subscriptions of Spotify, Netflix and the Adobe Suite.
DIGITAL MEDIA: I lost my keys yesterday, so today I had to make about one hundred different calls to try and find them. I called the McNeal maintenance line, the St. Paul student center, my apartment’s office, UMN Landcare, the Campus Connector lost and found - nothing. I didn’t have time to go on social media with all of my homework that I had to get done today. But at 11 pm just as I finished all of my work, I stumbled across the TikTok app on my iPad. I ended up scrolling through my FYP for nearly an hour and a half, which postponed my bedtime to nearly 1 am which was not my smartest choice. I laughed pretty hard while I was on the app though, so I think it’s worth it.
LEARNING: I dropped a class today, Career and Internship prep for design. It was a big step for me, but I know it is the right choice! Because I took extra time yesterday to practice self-care and bake, today I was pretty crunched on homework. This included finalizing my business cards for Text and Image and drawing my repeat pattern for Color and Form.
FOOD: Food today was a combination of leftovers from my baking extravaganza yesterday. I had cranberry orange bread for breakfast. Lunch was pasta to-go in between classes in an empty classroom in McNeal. I got a text during lunch that my friend was going to drop off a loaf of banana bread for us this afternoon, and when I got home it was sitting there! It was so delicious so here’s a huuuuuge thank you to him, what a thoughtful gift! Baking is something that I love and I want to start sharing my bakes with friends much more often!

Day 26 - February 16th, 2021
GOODS/SERVICES: I did not buy anything today, but I did use my daily subscriptions of Spotify, Netflix and the Adobe Suite (I realized that I always forget to add this one in).
DIGITAL MEDIA: I went on Pinterest today, but stayed off my other social media. On Pinterest, I began a new board with different web-based design layouts. I’ll include a picture of one of my pins. Per usual, I also got sidetracked and spent nearly an hour scrolling through images. I saved a multitude of savory pastry recipes too. This is in part inspired by the episode of the Great British Baking Show that I watched this weekend, which was pastry week! I love it when the shows I watch inspire me to learn new things! Speaking of which, I watched another episode  of GBBS tonight after class finished.
LEARNING: I only had two classes today. This morning, I had color and form where we got to experiment with dying fabric which was a first for me. At night, I had Design and its Discontents where we talked about the upcoming product redesign project and had group peer review of our essay. I spent some of the afternoon working on the $2 splurge essay which is due on Thursday.
FOOD: Breakfast was eggs this morning. I became really overwhelmed my schoolwork today, so my response was obviously stress baking. On Tuesdays, I have the afternoon free so I used some of that time to get busy in the kitchen today. I made the internet-famous TikTok pasta (one of my roommates told me about it, I didn’t know it was a thing), more cranberry orange bread, and a loaf of white bread. Sometimes spending some time doing a de-stressing activity like baking is much more productive and helpful than jumping straight into my homework. I found that to be true today, because when it came time to get my work done I was much more relaxed and focused.
MISC: We toured a house today and loved it, so we’re hoping to sign this weekend!
Here’s the house we toured:

Day 25 - February 15th, 2021
Today was my 20th birthday!! Woot woot!
GOODS/SERVICES: I received three packages today: a dutch oven (my birthday gift), three magazines that I ordered in early January and a box of chocolates from my grandma! It’s so exciting to receive things in the mail, especially if they aren’t items that I bought myself! As usual, I used the Campus Connector and the Light Rail to get to class and work.
DIGITAL MEDIA: I did not watch any TV today, but I did go on social media quite a bit this afternoon. I also received lots of nice messages from family and friends wishing me a happy birthday, so I took time to catch up with them and thank them for their kind words. This meant that my screen time spiked dramatically today, but of course I didn’t mind!
LEARNING: Today was more of a workday for me than anything. In Ceramics, I continued working on my cups and bowls. In Technology, Design, and Society, we had a lecture on transportation. This got me thinking about how much I rely on public transportation to get from class to work to the grocery store (and in a normal year to other friend’s houses). It is pretty inconvenient to have a car on campus, but it’s interesting to think about how much time I spend on busses in my day-to-day life.
FOOD: For breakfast, I had cranberry orange bread from the weekend. Lunch was leftover Indian takeout from our dinner last night. Dinner was a grilled cheese sandwich with tomatoes. Instead of cake, I requested that we go out and get Shamrock shakes for my birthday. I didn’t buy them, so I don’t have a receipt for this purchase, but I venmo’ed my roommate $4.50 for mine. It was so cold out so shakes were an interesting choice, but they were delicious!
While writing this I listened to: Jenny Lewis’ album, “On the Line”

Day 24 - February 14th, 2021
GOODS/SERVICES: For one of my birthday gifts, my parents wanted us to have a special meal for Valentine’s day and my birthday (tomorrow). We ordered takeout from “Curry in a Hurry” across the bridge on Franklin. We got three entrees to share and then some Samosas.
DIGITAL MEDIA: Guess what?!? I didn’t watch any TV today. If this 30-day journal has shown me anything, it is that I watch a LOT of TV with my roommates. I don’t feel bothered by this, because it’s not wasted time. I usually do light homework while I watch the show and even if I don’t, it’s my time to relax which is always worthwhile. We took some pictures together at our “fancy” valentine’s day dinner. One of my roommates posted a few of them so I downloaded Instagram and went and liked her post.
LEARNING: I spent a good part of today catching up on my schoolwork, as I usually do on Sundays. I completed two mini-essays for the asynchronous portion of my Text and Image course. I researched different patterns of consumerism and how packaging affects how we shop for my splurge essay for Design and its Discontents. Finally, I began working on my Pecha Kucha presentation for Technology, Design, and Society.
FOOD: Breakfast today as some of my cranberry orange bread. Lunch was a slice of quiche from yesterday’s baking extravaganza. Dinner was our Indian takeout meal that I described above! Dessert was a variety of fancy chocolate bars from the grocery store.
MISC: I learned how to play the card game Rummy 500.
While writing this I listened to: the Euphoria soundtrack

Day 23 - February 13th, 2021
GOODS/SERVICES: Per usual, I also used my streaming services: Hulu, Spotify and HBO. My roommate and I went grocery shopping this morning. Because I try not to grocery shop very often, I made quite the haul. Unfortunately, I lost the receipt on the way home, so I’ll list the items that I had on my list (and the extras that I can remember buying) and their approximate prices. I checked my bank account to see the actual total.
Yogurt $6.99
Eggs $2.99
Cornstarch $1.99
Pudding $1.99
Yeast $1.99
Oranges $3.99
Cranberries $3.99
Feta $2.99
Potatoes $1.99
Sweet Potatoes $2.00
Lemons $2.00
Carrots $1.99
Tomatoes $2.99
Lettuce $1.49
Chocolate Bars 3 @ $1.99 each
Onions $1.49
Zucchini $1.25
Pasta 2 @ $1.49 each
Pasta sauce $1.99
Pumpkin 2 @ $1.99 each
Cheese-its $2.99
Total w/ tax: $69.53
DIGITAL MEDIA: I stayed off of social media today, but I did take lots of photos of our canine visitors. Before dinner, I Facetimed my parents and dog for a while to catch up on life. I miss them so much, so it was so nice to see them virtually.
LEARNING:  I didn’t do any homework today!
FOOD: I did some baking after we returned home from the grocery store. I made a loaf of cranberry orange bread and zucchini and cheddar quiche! I’ll share a photo of them. Baking has been my response to the extreme cold. I would love to be getting outside and sledding/skating, but with the current weather, that’s not a safe option.
While writing this I listened to: Taylor Swift’s album, “Folklore”

Day 22 - February 12th, 2021
GOODS/SERVICES: Per usual, I also used my streaming services: Hulu, Spotify and HBO. I took the Campus Connector to West Bank to throw in Regis for a few hours this morning. Then my roommate picked me up for a tour of a house in Como, thus using some gas in the short drive over there.
DIGITAL MEDIA: I stayed off of social media today, but I did watch TV. We watched two episodes of Euphoria and I watched one episode of the Great British Baking Show.
LEARNING: I didn’t do any homework today!
FOOD: Today wasn’t my most nutritious day of meals. I’m on my last day of food before I go shopping so I was working with what I had. For breakfast, I had eggs on toast. For lunch, I had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Dinner was bean and cheese tacos.
MISC: One of my roommates’ parents came into town for the weekend and her dogs got to stay with us at our apartment! They are wonderful guests! Today was a laidback day of relaxing at home. We played board games in the afternoon, hung out with the dogs, and watched some TV.
While writing this I listened to: Spotify’s playlist, “Low-Key”

Day 21 - February 11th, 2021
GOODS/SERVICES: I took the Campus Connector back home to West Bank and then to work in St. Paul. Per usual, I also used my streaming services: Hulu, Spotify and HBO. I also used McNeal’s printing services lab in order to print some drafts of our business cards in Text and Image.
DIGITAL MEDIA: After my decision yesterday to delete my social media apps, I stayed off of them today. I did watch two youtube videos today: one from Alison Roman’s new Youtube series, called “Alison Roman makes Sticky Apple Cake” and the other was from the channel “Wild We Roam” called “These are the Days, Boat Life Ep. 36. I’ve noticed that I watch significantly less Youtube than I did when I was younger. I used to be obsessed with checking my subscription box for new videos from my favorite “influencers”, but now I often forget I have the app.
LEARNING: I had quite a bit of coursework today. In Color and Form, we had a guest speaker from the Goldstein talk to us about textiles. I’m not particularly familiar with textile printing, so being exposed to so many different designs and cultural influences was so cool for me. In Text and Image, we had our final critique on our business cards along with doing an activity on printed color. Finally, in Design and its Discontents, my group gave their presentation on the readings for this week. I definitely have Zoom anxiety, so this was a little nerve-wracking for me but I got through it and it went well.
FOOD: Breakfast was cinnamon toast on the go, which froze on my walk to the bus. Before Text and Image, I found an empty classroom and quickly ate my lunch which was pasta and cheese and crackers. For dinner, I had some roasted veggies.
While writing this I watched: an episode of Euphoria
Here was one of the posters that we looked at in Text and Image:

Day 20 - February 10th, 2021
GOODS/SERVICES: I took the Campus Connector back home to West Bank and then to work in St. Paul. Per usual, I also used my streaming services: Hulu, Spotify and HBO.
DIGITAL MEDIA: I caught myself going on both Instagram and TikTok while I was commuting across campus today. This is a habit that I don’t really love, I’d much rather knit on the bus or just sit and listen to music. I ended up deleting the apps at the end of the day so I could limit the time I spend on them. Later on in the day, I worked on applications for summer jobs through UMN Handshake.
LEARNING: I had three classes today: Ceramics, Career and Internship prep, and Technology, Design, and Society. Ceramics was tough for me today, because I struggled to stay focused and center my clay. I think staying up later last night really affected me. In Career and Internship prep we talked about different networking opportunities that we have, which was a bit overwhelming because I’m considering changing career paths. Finally, in TDS we learned about fracking which is something that I don’t often talk about in school. I participated in the debate and shared my opinion on the threat of Sulfide-Ore Copper Mining in the Boundary Waters. If you’d like to learn more about this, check out this link: https://www.savetheboundarywaters.org
FOOD: I woke up kind of late, so all I had time to grab was a granola bar for breakfast. I was super hungry during Ceramics. For lunch, I had eggs on toast. Dinner was pasta with red sauce and beans. Luckily, I had the ingredients for peanut butter cookies, so I made those for my roommates and I!
While writing this listened to: Gregory Alan Isakov’s album, “Evening Machines”

Day 19 - February 9th, 2021
GOODS/SERVICES: I took the campus connector multiple times today, as well as using my regular subscriptions of HBO and Netflix. My birthday is next Monday and I asked for a dutch oven. Today, I picked out the one I want and ordered it on Amazon (a very modern way to do a birthday gift).
DIGITAL MEDIA: My roommates and I watched an episode of Euphoria after dinner and during the day I watched an episode of the Great British Baking Show. I redownloaded the apps for Instagram and TikTok today before I went to bed today. I ended up spending an hour and a half on my phone before bed which had me up until 1am. I had to be up at 7:30am the next morning, so that definitely wasn’t my smartest decision.
LEARNING: I had two classes today: Color and Form and Design and its Discontents. In Color and Form I completed our first project which was the screen-printed “Self” and “Alter Ego”.
FOOD: Breakfast was some quick eggs. Lunch was a bagel from Bruegger’s on University.
Everything bagel with Jalapeno cream cheese
TOTAL: $3.11
For dinner, I had some of my leftover pasta from last night. I tried to make a pan of brownies for dessert but I think I missed an ingredient or inaccurately measured something because they didn’t turn out. I was sad, but I just ate some chocolate chips instead.
While writing this I watched “Euphoria”

Day 18 - February 8th, 2021
GOODS/SERVICES:  I took the campus connector to West Bank and then to work in St. Paul. I also used the following subscriptions: Spotify and HBO.
DIGITAL MEDIA: I spent some time on Pinterest saving recipes today. I specifically was searching for King Arthur recipes to try out, because they’re a pretty reliable source for bakers like myself. I’m really excited about some of the recipes I found, a few favorites are Samosas with Quick Flaky Pastry, Chocolate Midnight Pie, and their Key Lime Tart. I also got in contact with two different landlords today about potential houses for next year! Finally, I facetimed my dog for a little bit because I miss him terribly.
LEARNING: I had Ceramics and Technology, Design and Society today. In Ceramics, we got a tutorial on throwing bowls which I haven’t done in almost six years. In TDS, we discussed new technology in the transportation industry which was definitely a new topic for me.
FOOD: I had banana PB toast and a stale donut for breakfast. Lunch was a bit of my roommate’s salad kit that was about to go bad. Dinner was bean tacos!
While writing this I watched “Euphoria”

Day 17 - February 7th, 2021
GOODS/SERVICES: I’m not sure if this technically falls under a “good”, but I made a homemade chessboard today. After we all finished our homework for the day, we played a few games and it was so fun. I originally was going to buy us a board, but it was too cold to go out to get one and this worked out so well! I’ll attach a picture. Other than this, we didn’t buy anything today or leave the apartment at all today.
DIGITAL MEDIA: I logged back onto Instagram today to respond to a few messages about donuts. I also went on Tiktok and watched some of the videos that my roommate texted to me in the app. I cut myself off after a half-hour, which was already too much on a designed “homework day”.
LEARNING: Like most Sundays, I spent a lot of time catching up on schoolwork today. During the afternoon At night, I met with my group for the reading presentation this week in Design and its Discontents.
FOOD: For breakfast, I had a leftover donut. Around lunchtime, my friend stopped over today (masked of course) and dropped off some bread which was delicious!! I ate some of it for lunch and supplemented with a peanut butter-banana sandwich. Dinner was sheet pan fried rice.
While writing this listened to: Spotify’s playlist called “Indie Pop 2010s”

Day 16 - February 6th, 2021
GOODS/SERVICES: I used DoorDash for the first time to get our meal delivered to our apartment building. This was a little stressful because I had to time the pickup right so our food wouldn’t sit outside in the cold. I also used my regular subscriptions to Netflix, Hulu and Spotify.
DIGITAL MEDIA: I posted a picture of the donuts I made on Instagram (I will add it at the end). I checked my phone several times during the day to see the comments on it. Posting on Instagram gives me a lot of anxiety so I don’t do it often, but I do like to share things that I bake online. Otherwise, we watched the final episode of Love Island which was disappointing because the couple we wanted to win got second. I also watched an episode of GBBS before bed, because my mom got ahead of me!
LEARNING: I didn’t do a single bit of schoolwork today.
FOOD: Today was not my healthiest day of food consumption. I spent my morning making donuts, which was a first for me. They were quite a bit of work, but totally worth it. Instead of a real breakfast, I ate leftover chocolate filling from the donuts and then I ate an actual donut when they were done. For lunch I had another donut (I can’t believe I’m putting this on the internet). My parents live in a warmer climate and they felt bad that we were stuck in the apartment because of the cold, so they had dinner delivered for us! It was so sweet of them to do and the meal was great. We had donor wraps from Spitz.
Donor wrap $11
Sweet Potato Waffle Fries $4
Total for my meal: $15
While writing this I watched an episode of GBBS :)

Day 15 - February 5th, 2021
GOODS/SERVICES: I took two different campus busses today, both the Campus Connector and the East Bank circulator. I had to pick up a few things from the Dinkytown Target today, which is quite the trip from my apartment over in Prospect Park. Here’s what I bought:
Bananas $1.45
Bread 2 @ $1.49 each
Dot’s Pretzels (did NOT realize they were this expensive, kind of a big splurge) $6.99
Townhouse crackers $3.19
Ketchup $0.99
Eggs $2.89
Cheese blocks 2 @ $2.19 each
Cream cheese $1.79
Total w/out tax: $24.86
Today was a big day for me because I decided to splurge (a little more than a $2 splurge) and buy Airpods. I’ve thought about this purchase for a while and it just makes sense for doing Zoom classes. Since I was already placing an order, I grabbed a few rolls of scotch tape which I’ll use in my screenprinting class. I used an Amazon gift card that I had from work last summer, which took my total down to $90.34.
Airpods $119.98
Scotch Packaging Tape 3-Pack $10.75
Total w tax: $140.34
Total w gift card: $90.34
After going to Target, I thought about going to get coffee to go from Bordertown, but I got too cold on my walk, so I just walked straight to Rapson.
DIGITAL MEDIA: I listened to Spotify while I cleaned up the apartment this morning. I shuffled music by “Laundry Day”, one of my favorites was called “Jane”. I avoided other social media today, but per usual I watched TV with my roommates at night. We watched Love Island of course, but
LEARNING: I was pretty distracted in the morning and did some cleaning around the apartment instead of homework. I find it difficult to stay focused on Fridays because I don’t have class. After going to Target, I walked to Rapson and got quite a bit of work done at one of the tables upstairs. Last year I loved studying in the Architecture library there, but, unfortunately, it isn’t open yet this semester. I watched a lecture for my Ceramics class, did my weekly reading for Design and its Discontents (I’m doing the reading presentation next week)
FOOD: For breakfast, I had chocolate chip cookies...oops. For lunch, I finished the rest of my mango salsa and made bean and salsa tacos. Dinner was pizza night! We really miss having the Punch on University open, but luckily this year we have a car. We drove over to the Punch Pizza on Grand Avenue in St. Paul. It was sooooooo good!!!
Total: One pizza $11.25
While writing this I listened to:  the artist Dijon’s discography shuffled
