As anyone who knows of me would expect, I think Barriss should've appeared more in The Clone Wars, but her development isn't as inexplicable or random as it looks. I think the best way to interpret Barriss's change is that, over the 3.5-season gap between appearances, she sees what the audience sees: an escalating, unending war causing more and more death which will eventually kill her and everyone she knows.
Barriss is a secondary character in a tragedy with its ending already written, she realized this, and she took it very, very poorly.

One encouraging sign from the TotE trailer is that Barriss isn't seen using a red lightsaber.
Tumblr media
Her sparring saber is green.
Tumblr media
Not that these trailers always show Barriss's saber color truthfully...
Tumblr media
The other trainee gets the red saber, Barriss fights with the Force and the environment. I can only hope she presses his skull into the energy field and lets it scorch away his flesh millimeter by millimeter until it hits brain.
Tumblr media
When in inquisitor garb, she still isn't seen drawing the weapon. I really hope I'm right about what this all means.

This is just extrapolating from scraps in one trailer, but I really hope I'm right about this: the inquisitors don't understand Barriss at all and it's going to bite them.
Barriss doesn't say anything in the trailer, nothing suggesting agreement. Barriss also doesn’t say or do anything which could suggest disloyalty. She is going along with every step of training, avoiding attention and waiting for her opportunity. Literally keeping her head down, as she is the first to bow to Vader.
Stuck in an environment she hates, doing things against her better judgement because she's ordered to, trusting nobody around her, and pretending none of it bothers her. Barriss was in the exact same position before betraying the Jedi, and those were people she liked. This time, she's got past experience to draw on and absolutely no reason to hesitate.
She murdered her way into this situation, she can murder her way out.

I'm kinda with Marcille about ancient magic. Everybody whines about how horrific it is, but the alternative to using an already-dead dragon as a meat source was to bring down a bunch of sacrificial livestock, which I guess people think is less wrong? As Marcille points out, healing magic can be used for torture. She even proved it by healing her friends and ignoring their screams.
There's no compelling reason for why her spell was evil, only that it's illegal. "Gross, why does it use so much blood-" Oh no, not blood, the stuff that's inside all of you! It's not scary, I donated a bunch of blood I found and this kind of thinking is why there are shortages. Falin came back to life, didn't she? Marcille's soul appears to be intact. It won't be by the end of the story, but that wasn't because of the resurrection spell. Everything was dandy until Thistle showed up.
It worked and I don't get what you're all complaining about.

There are a ton of ways Barriss's next appearance can go, but I think I can live with any of them so long as Barriss is free by the end. Being trapped in the toxic environment of the Inquisitorius is unnecessary. She can torment herself just fine on her own.
Hero or villain, Barriss is at her most interesting when acting independently. There are justified criticisms of the Sabotage Arc, but the theories about Palpatine manipulating Barriss... no. Palps ultimately benefited from the events, but he, master schemer that he is, had no clue what was happening or who the culpit was. Barriss is so unpredictable, Palpatine does not know what to expect from her.
There's a lot of fascinating characterization with Barriss and she loses it all if she's being directed by somebody else. Experiencing a crisis of faith, becoming uncontrollable, highly intelligent and increasingly volatile as her trust in others breaks down, forced to get frighteningly inventive to compensate for her lack of allies. As long as she's not dead or stuck in the C-list villain lineup, I'm good.

Fantastic news, everybody. A combination of events over the last few months reawakened the dark power which fuels me, and I'm going to finish Stones in the River's Flow or die trying. No promises on Forming New Bonds, my bandwidth is limited.
In this exciting chapter, Ahsoka decides to stop obliviously flirting, and begins knowingly testing the waters to start a throuple. F questions her choice of allies as Barriss proves herself a lot less evil but a lot more cunning than F expected. Barriss has a sniper rifle and could kill soooo many people if she wanted to, but letting them live better serves her diabolical plots.

Barriss: When put into a high-stress environment, my resentment built up until I planned to attack and even kill people who were close to me. I did this while successfully concealing my feelings and intentions despite the psychic abilities of everyone around me. The Grand Inquisitor: Fantastic. You'll fit perfectly into this even higher-stress environment. Now I'm going to give you access to military equipment and intentionally make you as angry as possible. I see no way this could backfire.
