“I would like to tell you that right then and there I insisted that all of our dogs be handled in this kinder way. It should have been the obvious progression, but sadly that was not the case. It is something that haunts me still, but at the time I did not have the confidence or maturity to trust my instincts and separate from the traditional training methodology. For me, there was no sudden shift from physical corrections to the positive-only approach; rather, it was a slow evolution with many mistakes along the way.
[...]
What changed my methodology the most was my increased understanding of dogs and their perspective of the world we share. My approach to handling changed as my understanding of dogs grew, until one day I realized that it was morally wrong to treat dogs with anything other than patience, understanding, and kindness. I have come to appreciate that dogs are capable of deep feeling, that they have individual personalities and intellectual capacities, extraordinary at times. Most of all I have learned that, beyond all other species, dogs have evolved to be our partners, protectors, and helpmates.”

Here’s your reminder today to let your pets do things for themselves. Ball under the couch? Encourage them to crawl under or lift it enough that they can. Gotta trim nails? Encourage cooperative care and give treats for holding still by themselves. Can’t figure out a training task? Break it down into smaller pieces and reinforce smaller successes more highly. It’s amazing how much confidence and critical thinking autonomy can build.

I was making a list on what dog gear Brownie actually needs and hoooooooo boy. Many many things. (Read: this one specific shape of plastic chew that technically isn't a chew toy)
Another harness so when his gets StiNky (or gross in some other way), he can wear the other.
One of those long leads with a handle in the middle so when we go for mini hikes, he doesn't give me rope burns because he suddenly rolls down a hill and drags me with him
Another leather/fabric collar because his current one gets SoggY and he is a Princess with sensitive skin
And an LED collar because it's gettin dark early (and because im just that lil bit extra)
Therefore, he will sometimes be wearing 3 collars at the same time on his short Short neck. (Flea collar, leather collar with id tag, LED collar)
