a list of whump-related tropes that never fail to pop my rocks™, in no particular order
sweet innocent happy-go-lucky character that has had an extremely traumatizing past and that’s why they choose to be so happy all the time
stoic tough character getting horrifically beaten down to the point that they totally break down and is also being berated (by both themselves and others) for being so weak
someone being literally kicked while they’re already down. preferably adding to prior injuries
a character fighting with past unhealed injuries (e.g., when a well placed punch fucks up already broken ribs) and they wince from the accumulated pain but force themselves to keep going anyways and they’re getting visibly more sloppy and tired but they have to keep fighting
touch-starved traumatized character gets their first loving touch and they absolutely MELT (and maybe even tear up and tremble as they lean into it)
“i’m just hurting you for fun.”
unheard, unacknowledged begging for mercy. best if the response is a kick and/or a sharp “shut up”
“you’ve taken care of me. it’s time i return the favor”
a character finally, finally getting the chance to be happy after suffering for long, then dying as soon as that happiness is within their grasp
a humanoid (but definitely non-human) character cutting off the traits that make them non-human (e.g., cutting their ears down to make them round, amputating their tail, etc.) so they can finally stop suffering for their heinous crime of not being a human
a character being forcibly drugged while in captivity so that they can’t escape lest they go through withdrawal
two words: pet whump

Whump Prompt #734
“Hey squirt.” A says to the child as they bound into the room. The child had heard there was a commotion in A’s room - A had an episode brought on by past and recent trauma. A has to quickly wipe tears from their face when they see the ball of energy whizz into the destroyed room.
“B said you were hurt. Are you okay?” The child asks.
“Yeah.” A chokes, hiding their split knuckles. “Yeah I’m fine. What are you doing here? You should be in bed.”
“I bought you a Band-Aid!” The child says, brandishing the kitten covered plaster. Before A could protest, the child haphazardly but carefully places it over a graze on A’s arm. A nearly begins crying all over again.
“Thanks.” They say. And the child wordlessly pulls A in for a hug, revealing a disturbing level of maturity for such a young age.

Whump Prompt; 8
A whumpee has been subjected to several burn wounds from a hot iron rod, a cigarette, etc. They are placed in a room with weird objects on the ceiling. Whumper flicks something on and liquid sprays on to the Whumpee from the ceiling, with them thrashing in their chair. Whumper takes out a match-box and lights a match, smiling at the whumpee. Realization hits Whumpee hard as their begging, pleading, eyes meet with Whumper's. Whumpee fears it might be burner oil. The match hits the ground as whumper leaves the room. Whumpee pleads for them to be let free as they hyperventilate and panic, but nothing happens. The match is extinguished in the liquid. It's nothing but plain water.

When the fight started, the whumpee was sure their caretaker was doomed.
Yet the caretaker stands, teeth bared and eyes lit by malice. Tall, bloody and vicious, the whumper torn apart at their feet. The whumper has been quiet for some time now, a body broken well past the point of death.
The whumpee flinches back when the caretaker's eyes turn to them.
Too injured to stand, they can only cower as the caretaker approaches. Step by step, the anger dies out, smothered with soft concern. The caretaker kneels, reaches out, cradles the whumpee's face between their hands.
"It's okay now," they promise.
Their touch, their voice, their gaze. The familiarity and comfort.
But the whumpee can feel the whumper's blood cool against their skin when the caretaker pulls their hands away. The chill of it makes the whumpee shake, makes them curl up and tremble as the caretaker moves to examine their wounds.
The cruelty that the whumpee saw in the caretaker's eyes was so much more than anything they'd ever seen in the whumper's.

When Whumpee’s worst fear comes true and all they can do is shut down while telling themself that it can’t be happening. Telling themself that it’s just another nightmare. But their denial can’t keep them safe for long.

Whump: Clothing
- That aesthetic of a slightly battered whumpee coming out of a fight with a ripped shirt James Tiberius Kirk, I see you
- Scraped knees that you can see right through the holes in the whumpee’s pants
- Bathrobes that provide a sense of comfort to a recovering whumpee
- Whumpees who are too depressed or injured to change out of their bed clothes
- Soaked clothes that cling to the whumpee’s body
- Clothes from a good Samaritan that are slightly too large for the whumpee, but are very cozy and warm
- Caretaker using their jacket to cover a shivering whumpee
- Caretaker ripping apart a favorite shirt to serve as bandages for a bleeding whumpee
- Heavy duty clothing that survived unscathed being lifted to reveal a broken body underneath This is a personal favorite of mine… Any clothing item that doesn’t wear, rip, or pill is instantly very sexy to me. And if it happens to be tough enough to survive its wearer being whumped, hoo boy h o w d y I am in love
- Uniforms that nobody likes, but everybody has to wear
- Ripped space suits. Cut open space suits. Space suits with a cracked helmet. Space. Suits. We need more space suits in whump. Please and thank you.
- Capes that conceal weapons or wounds
- A bruised and battered whumpee painfully wrenching themself out of a neoprene wetsuit
- Blood on a white shirt

Whump prompt
"I'm scared," No you're not, stop it, "It- it hurts, and I'm scared." You're scaring her, stop it, stop it!
"I don't want him to hit me anymore. I want to go home, I want- " To cry, to scream, to beg, to plead, to be a coward, to let you help me, please help me. "I want you to make it stop. You can't, I know, but please, please make it stop."

Fire
As soon as they’re far enough away from Whumper’s base, Rescuer makes camp and lights a campfire, thinking of warmth and light and a hot meal for Whumpee.
As the soft crackle of flame and smell of wood smoke reaches Whumpee, they start to cry in fear.

Whump Prompt #679
Submitted by anon - thanks!
Android/cyborg characters with digital systems getting hacked by an enemy and turned into a puppet that gets used to deadly effect against their own teammates. Even better if the character is still aware of what they’re doing, but aren’t in control, thus they can’t stop what’s happening nor can they even say a word to explain. Are their teammates understanding, or do they think A attacked on purpose? You decide.

When the whumpee has to travel somewhere in a car for some reason when they’re still horribly injured and in a lot of pain, and there isn’t any good way of easing the whumpee’s pain. The caretaker sitting in the backseat with the whumpee while one of their friends drives, and them cradling the whumpee’s head in their lap. The whumpee letting out little pained noises whenever the car hits a bump, and the caretaker gently stroking their face and hair, trying to soothe them. The whumpee leaning into their touch, and eventually ending up half asleep, in too much pain to really be able to rest, but too exhausted from the whole thing to really be awake. The caretaker eventually getting tired, too, but not allowing themself to sleep, because the whumpee needs the comfort, and the caretaker is determined to do everything they can to make the car ride a little bit more bearable.

When the whumpee is in so much pain they’re delirious, and have no idea where they are. Their teammates trying over and over again to convince them that they’re safe and surrounded by their friends, but the whumpee being too out of it to understand or believe them. The whumpee eventually passing out from the pain, and their teammates being relieved, because at least while the whumpee is unconscious, they’re not terrified.

Whumpee With Very Specific “Amnesia”
Whumpee can recall most of the ordeal just fine, but when asked about a particular scar, time, location or what have you, their memory suddenly goes blank. They can’t recall a thing about that one specific part of the ordeal.
The Catch? They can remember, but some things are too painful for Caretaker to hear. Whether it be something from either of their pasts, or something too horrific to tell, Whumpee cannot bring themselves to say what that part of the ordeal inculded.
Now, what happens when Whumpee comes clean?
Is Caretaker angry or hurt because they were lied to? Are they quick to reassure? Do they shut down, leaving Whumpee guessing at their real feelings?

Note
I just think a delirious whumpee should be betrayed by a bad caretaker and not understand what’s going on until it’s too late
Ooo, very nice, very nice! Even better if when it’s all over, they’re still confused enough to be asking, “Where’s Caretaker? Are they coming back soon?” and the others have to explain it to them and keep breaking their heart again.

"Whumpee, come on. You're being unfair." Caretaker crosses their arms. "How was I supposed to know that shit would freak you out?"
"You, you weren't," Whumpee responds, trying to even their voice out. "It - it isn't your fault. I just need a second to ground myself, that's all." They wipe their nose, rubbing their eyes furiously. "I'm sorry. I'll pull myself together."
"Yeah, you better," Caretaker mumbles. "We can't even hang out like we used to anymore. I'm not Whumper. You know that. So why are you still so scared of me?"
"I'm not! I'm, I'm getting better, I swear, I just -- I don't know why I'm like this, I'm trying to get better.." Whumpee looks down, staring at the carpet.
Caretaker throws their hands up, exasperated. "Fine! Whatever!" They move towards Whumpee's front door, pulling their coat on. "Call me when I don't have to spend every ten minutes reassuring you over some stupid bullshit."
Whumpee stays sitting, willing away tears.
