Getting Started

If you’re like me at all, then one of the hardest parts of writing is… actually writing. Getting started is hard. There’s so much to say and do all at once and you can only put one word after the other.

So I thought I’d write out a short guide on getting started and getting past that block.

1. Let go of insecurity and perfectionism.

I’m a perfectionist, and I’m sure a lot of you are too. I’m well aware that this step is easier said than done, but it’s so important. To break through the beginner’s block, we have to let go of our perfectionist ideals. We all want to write the perfect story, and we want to do our characters and audiences justice. That’s what editing is for!

No one has to see your first draft but you. There’s no need to be embarrassed or upset by mistakes, especially if you are the only witness. So do your best to let go of the insecurity and perfectionism that’s holding you back. You can stretch your perfectionist muscles during another draft.

2. Start with an outline or guide.

I know there’s a big debate in the writing community about pantsing vs planning, but planning has its uses! If you’re not sure where to start, an outline is a good way to organize your thoughts. If you have a dozen scenes and lines and ideas running through your head, write down a line or two to describe them and use the click and drag function on Word or google docs to organize where each scene goes. Once you have an order you like, you may find a starting point that feels more natural.

3. Just write.

I hate this bit of advice, but it’s important to remember: your story is not set in stone. If you write a scene and you don’t like it or don’t think it works, you can always throw it in the deleted scenes document. So don’t be afraid to just go ham and write whatever comes to mind. Eventually, you will find a direction.

4. Remember that no writing is ever wasted.

If you don’t keep something, that’s okay! No writing is ever wasted. Every minute you spend writing is a minute learning and honing your craft. Even if that scene or line doesn’t make it to the final cut, that doesn’t mean it was a waste of words! It made you better, even if the reader never sees that.

I hope this helps someone out there to get past that block and start their story. Remember the world will be better for it!

Hi Anon! So, you asked this question a long time ago, but I really wanted to address it as there are a lot of fanfiction writers on my page and I felt it'd be good to share my opinion.

Personally, I haven't written fanfictions before, so I don't feel I can comment on that part, but from my understanding there happens to be a large NSFW community within the fanfictions community. I think this is great that writers are free to explore sexuality in a safe space, but I've also seen a lot of hate on those writing fictions about celebrities and groups.

I- like every other 14-16 year old- read fanfiction, but could personally never get into, but as you mentioned, you have a good sense of self-awareness. You are in touch with the fact that these are people and not just characters, however I completely understand why writers use real life people as characters!

Celebrities and fictional characters are already created! They've got personalities and features and writers only really have to work on the plot then, it's easier to create a world when the characters are already fleshed out (figuratively and literally).

With that being said, it's important not to abuse the artist's work with anything you write, so really there is a fine line. I'm sure this is up for discussion in many different fandoms, but personally I think it's okay as long as you establish that you are using these people as characters and not implying that the celebrities do or participate in these things (eg: spreading rumours, invading their personal life...).

💉do you have tattoos?

Yes! I have five, but as every tattooed person says... I desperately want more! you shouldn't have asked me about this, because I love talking about them! Hehehe~

I got my first two together, the half sleeve and my forearm tattoo. I got them done at Old London Road Tattoos a few weeks after I turned 18 and I love them as much now as I did back then! The artist was amazing and I honestly can't recommend this place enough! If you're in the UK and are looking for a place, please check them out!

My next one was done in Korea and I got it as a matchy one with best friend back home in England! Designed by the incredible @idkhazee on TikTok! She does a tonne of amazing designs and this is the one me and my friend chose!

Next up is my fish tattoo! I also got her done in Korea, designed and tattooed by an incredible artist in Daegu. I got this one on my chest and I heard it was one of the most painful places to get it, but it really wasn't that bad...

Finally, my most recent- and current favourite- is my thigh tattoo! I got this one on a whim after seeing the artist post that it was available on her Instagram. She was so lovely and took the time to talk with me even though my Korean isn't great- for that, I was very grateful!

Hi~ Sure thing! Here’s a few that I thought up, I hope they’re okay, I’m in a bit of a rut at the moment...

He looked her over, a frown between his eyes as he watched her try and get herself together. She was pretty, pretty enough for him to notice a wedding band on her ring finger, but she looked so sad, staring down at him in the hospital bed like he’d done something horribly wrong.

“This isn’t my fault!” She yelped, pushing his hands away from her shoulders, “It can’t be my fault when I can’t remember!” She cried, fingers shaking as she looked around the house, taking in the wedding photos and school portraits, a row of baby photos along the corridor. It made her chest feel much too tight.

“Just look around you, life is going to go on and you’re going to be stuck with me, like this. Do you want that? Do you seriously want to have to explain what happened to me everyday? By tomorrow, I’ll forget we even had this conversation, we’ll back to square one. Again.”

For someone so positive, it was heartbreaking to see her like this, her head on a hospital pillow and her arms hooked up to a million different machines. There was a frown between her brows, even in sleep and when she finally awoke, she quickly took in her surroundings like a frightened animal. The woman sat in the seat beside her bed reached out a hand and smiled at her gently, but she shied away from the strangers touch. “I’m sorry, but do you work here? Who exactly are you?”

“Do you love me enough to make me fall in love with you again everyday? I know it’s a lot to ask, so if you can’t do that, please don’t wait around for me. I’m not getting better.”

These are less than mediocre, but I’ll be sure to add anymore if and when my brain turns on again! It’s been rebooting for a very long time now and I’m getting kind of sick of it ahah! All my love and good luck with your writing! xox

EDIT: Also, I’m like terrible when it comes to movies, but I recently watched 50 First Dates and I wanted to recommend it if you haven’t watched it already! It’s a 2004 movie, so I’m really late, but it’s about a girl with short-term memory loss and I thought it might help with inspiration!

Character Deaths

“Hi! I love that I found your blog!

Little bit of a dark request, do you have a prompt list for character deaths?”

Hi, hi! I didn’t, but I’ll sure make you one! Here are 10 prompts for character deaths.

TW: DEATH (But I think that was a little obvious)

“It’s a- a little cold in h-here, right?” She asked, fingers shaking as she bled out on the bathroom floor. There was blood, too much blood; everywhere, on everything. He pulled her closer, trying not to cry too much as he felt the last of her energy drain from her fingertips. “Y-yeah, I-I guess so. J-just... don’t worry, it’ll be okay soon. I promise.”

She turned to him sharply at the sudden noise, watching as the colour drained from his face and the pain shot through him, “N-no,” She couldn’t quite believe it was that easy to die, briefly wondering when exactly she’d started taking life for granted, “No! No, no, no...”

He knew it would end this way, there was no other way for it to end, but somehow he’d tricked himself into believing he wouldn’t be alone after all this, “I- I don’t think I’m ready for you to leave me just yet. Not like this.”

Unexpected surprises were her least favourite sort of thing. That’s why she faltered when answering the phone to the receptionist at the hospital, “Miss Fraser? You’re the emergency contact for Miss Lucinda Grace, yes? I think it best you come and visit her- as soon as possible, miss, it won’t be long now.”

He wasn’t exactly sure how many times he’d had someone die like this, in front of him, eyes devoid of emotion. He’d hated it the first time and nothing had changed, even now. Sometimes he wondered what they were thinking in their last moments, did they know they were dying? Did they know that in less than three minutes or so, their time of death would be called and they’d be a name on a piece of paper?

Killing hadn’t been an option, even from the start, but now they had a dead body on their hands, “Well, I didn’t do it, so I’m not helping.” “It might not have been your fault, but it doesn’t make you any less involved!” “Yeah, there’s still blood on your hands.” “No there’s not! Because I didn’t do it!” “I meant literally, there’s blood on your hands, go clean up.”

She paced the room, trying her best not to cry; no tears, Hannah, I don’t like to see you cry at the best of times, he’d said to her, years before any of this had even started. She knew there wasn’t long for him, she knew he was only going to be in pain if they kept him in here, strung up to a million machines, but she was selfish. She was selfish enough to keep him alive all this time, so what was a few days more?

“If you’re going to kill me, please do it quickly.” He asked, a smirk plastered on his lips once the gag was removed. His eyes were bruised, vision blurry from the hits, “You really think I’m going to be so kind as to kill you quickly after everything you’ve done?” He closed his eyes, trying to tune out the voice in front of him, “No, darling, death is a reward and you haven’t been good.”

“Don’t look at me like that.” She said weakly, lips twitching upwards into a half smile. “Like what?” She asked in return, playing with their joined fingers on her chest, “I’m looking at you normally.” “No, you’re looking at me like I’m a kicked puppy. You can’t save everyone, Timea, you have to let me go.”

The first thing she saw when she opened her eyes was smoke. Smoke and dust and rubble. Her foot was in an awkward position and the weight on her arm was not nearly light enough for her to push off. “Rebecca? Becca? Look at me...” Came a voice from beside her. She looked over, meeting Jonathon’s gaze, a sudden rush of relief overcoming her, “That’s it, you’re okay, you’re going to be fine.” He said through gritted teeth, trying his best not to wince. He wasn’t about to tell her that he’d been clipped by a bullet in the ribs.

They’re not great, I’m going through a bit of a block myself which is really annoying since I actually have time to write now that my exams are over... Hopefully it’ll pass! It’s good to be back on this blog, regardless. All my love xox
