for the love of god, mal didn’t suddenly decide he loved alina because she was powerful that wasn’t it

he has always loved and cared for alina, she is his best friend, he literally says in ‘ruin and rising’ he thought of her as more than a friend but repressed it because she was the best thing in his life, his best friend, and he didn’t think he was meant to feel that way towards her. just like alina subconsciously repressed her powers so she wasn’t separated from mal as a child, he subconsciously repressed his romantic love for her so he wouldn’t run the risk of losing the most important person in his life 

“Did you ever notice me in Keramzin?” He was silent for a long moment, and when I glanced at him, he was looking up at the glass ceiling. He’d gone red as a beet. “Mal?” He cleared his throat, crossed his arms. “As a matter of fact, I did. I had some very… distracting thoughts about you.” “You did?” I sputtered. “And I felt guilty for every one of them. You were supposed to be my best friend, not…” He shrugged and turned even redder.

but mal is also a seventeen year old guy!!! he isn’t perfect!! and that’s ok!! but when does he ever treat alina badly?! “You are my flag. You are my nation.” SHE IS EVERYTHING TO HIM. 

he doesn’t realise he loves her because she’s powerful. he realises that he loves her because when they are separated he can’t function without alina - he doesn’t realise how utterly intrinsic to him alina is until they are ripped apart. it takes them being torn apart for those repressed feelings to come to the surface, because he feels he’s lost her anyway! just like alina’s powers finally come to surface because she feels she’s lost mal, so stops subconsciously repressing the power, so mal’s feelings come to surface because he feels he’s lost her DO YOU SEE THE PARALLELS HERE

I missed you every hour. And you know what the worst part was? It caught me completely by surprise. I’d catch myself just walking around to find you, not for any reason, just out of habit, because I’d seen something that I wanted to tell you about or because I wanted to hear your voice. And then I’d realize that you weren’t there anymore, and every time, every single time, it was like having the wind knocked out of me. I’ve risked my life for you. I’ve walked half the length of Ravka for you, and I’d do it again and again and again just to be with you, just to starve with you and freeze with you and hear you complain about hard cheese every day.

I repeat - MAL IS SEVENTEEN. how many seventeen year olds have you met who 100% have their emotions sorted?! when mal realises he is in love HE LITERALLY DESERTS HIS ROLE FOR HER. WHICH COULD BE A DEATH SENTENCE.

alina figures out her feelings before mal does, sure, but that doesn’t make mal a bad person! she loves him, and in many ways the entire series can be viewed as alina and mal overcoming all the obstacles and issues they face to be together (including quite literal death) 

“I have loved you all my life, Mal,“ I whispered through my tears. “There is no end to our story.” 

MAL LOVES HER. AND SHE LOVES HIM. COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY.

“You are all I’ve ever wanted,” he said. “You are the whole of my heart.” 

Mal Oretsev didn’t love Alina because of her power. He loved her despite the power which tore them apart, which terrified him. Because he loves Alina, the real Alina, the Alina beneath the power, beneath the Sankt Alina - he loves the girl who is brave and fierce and funny and ran the hallways of an orphanage with him. And he will and does do anything to defend, love, and be there for her. Not once does he let her down, to the point of guiding the knife into his own chest so they can defeat the Darkling. 

MAL ORETSEV IS A GOOD PERSON AND HE AND ALINA LOVE EACH OTHER AND I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE HATE HE GETS.
