My avenue
The world appeared unhappy
A place where I could lull
And be outside of myself
And see a sky so dull
It happened that at times like this
I’d sense something awry
And wonder if I’d missed my time
And ask the question; why
But no-one wanted answers
They knew not what to say
And wandering so waywardly
Could not keep harm at bay
So what of undue harm; I ask
Is there a magic…

The hallowed ground
Standing on the hallowed ground
I look above and all around
And feel the magic touch
It comes to share the feelings grand
The crowd no more within its stands
As dusk replaces day
So much of meaning came before
Now just a memory - times of yore
Held within their land
I’ve walked with others – one – the same
Experienced the joy – the fame
And cheered as victory’s claimed
A stadium –…

The shallow sea
He stood before the shallow sea
And wondered what went wrong
If only for the simple things
Like solitude and song
He stood before the shallow sea
And thought that he’d have plenty
But then desire came along
And ‘fore he knew he’d spent it
The window opened once again
The sunshine danced along
He looked below to roses bloomed
and soon he saw a throng
The throng of roses flowered now…

A lesson
It wasn’t what he’d thought it was
And never would it be
The ease with which his mortal self
The ease with which he’d see
Tomorrow turn to yesteryear
And yesterday to now
And when they turned he held her hand
And whispered with a vow
A vow that would see them become
A couplet - ever stronger
A vow that would last through the years
And bring them love for longer
And with the thunder…

Umbrella Moon
She knew I knew her unknown thoughts
and things kept well from sight
like umbrella moon – a sweet perfume
as pure as delight
And when the night-time hovered
and the evening showed its face
I knew right then that she would send
with elegance and grace
Her beauty and compassion
her feeling of supreme
like winds that blew (strident and true)
expressions yet unseen
She was the butterfly and…

Regret
Regret – regret – a dreaded thought
the solitude of soul
desired by the darkest cloud
a lonely place to grow
The fence impaled slowly –
a gradual affect
barely noticed by the throng
unlikely to reflect
The light that glistened on the sea
the sun – it stayed to watch
the dance planned out so carefully
then – suddenly – it stopped
Regret – regret – I’ve had my share
but none that last ‘til…

Belief
Belief – it comes in many forms
and lends itself to thee
a shutter-stock of pictures
in a world of wizardry
It is a world one cannot see
and (surely) cannot touch
the make-believe of timelessness
of divinity and such
Though one is told one should believe -
as iron-clad as steel
only the strongest will survive
and then their oath reveal

The whistle stop
It may have been
a whistle stop
to some (but not to me)
It may have been
there all the while
beside the avid tree
And when the seasons
changed – and the
sunset turned to day
The deciduous
and evergreen
invited all to stay
They shaded thoughts
of yesteryear
and thoughts yet to apply
And as the winter
turned to spring
they pondered – asking why
Why did that man
just disappear
and fear and…

Once was
The misty rain
fell through the day
and left her smile (torn)
The deluge fell
but for a time
and left her beau (well-worn)
And as the sun
returned to face
the day (all but a blur)
Their eyes would meet
their hands entwine –
what will be – once was (they were)

Tomorrow
Tomorrow comes
when the sun
gives in to the moon
and warrants your
forgiveness as the
darkness comes too soon
Your presence means
the world – your smile
envied so
and enlightens
what once was void
the essence of forego
The sacrifice
of warmth returned
and thoughtfulness well told
and when the sun
returns to one
then all want to behold
The feeling of
reminiscence – the act
now well within…

Limerick XXXII
Norm was a fisherman down at the pier
He’d swill whiskey all through the year
One day he sorta
Fell into the water
And that was the end for old Norm, the poor dear

Limerick XXXI
The wind was blowing like blazes
But I knew that it wouldn’t faze us
My hair flew in the air
I said; I don’t care
I’ve got more in my bathroom next to my razors

By the highway near the ocean
By the highway near the ocean
I was walking on the pathway
by the highway near the ocean
when I saw a tidy park-bench
so I thought I’d take a break
As I sat there on the park-bench
near the ocean by the highway
I saw the shaded profile
of a woman closing in
Joe is that you; came the voice
from what seemed to be above me
I diverted my attention
to the girl in summer shorts
Her hair was flowing freely –
over the tip of her…

Don't tell
Don’t tell
I have it mastered now
I tell myself - and laugh
a happy laugh but ne’er do tell -
the secret’s safe with me
I say – and yet –
Don’t tell the bear or bees
of what I’ve done -
they love to talk
Don’t tell the birds
or the bards who ballads
lead – they toss it back
and forth as if a prize
Don’t tell the road the children
walk upon – their footprint shouts
so loud that the entire village
knows –…

Hannah and Holly and Jade and Jen
Hannah and Holly and Jade and Jen
Hannah and Holly and Jade and Jen
walked from the hills
to the shore in the sun
for a swim
Hannah blew bubbles
and sang a tune -
then the others joined in
and they played til noon
They’d frolic and gambol
whilst down by the sea
as the sun cracked a smile
as wide as can be
They had not a worry
not a worry at all -
they were young and carefree,
they were having a ball
Hannah and Holly and
Jade…
