Helldivers II Post
alright I've been playing helldivers on and off for about a month now and I think I've got an idea of what I like about it and what I do not like about it.
First off, like everyone ever says, the gunplay is ridiculously good and it really makes me realize what I've been missing, recoil is chaotic, aiming sight wiggle is noticeable and important to get right in the heat of it, in general like a surprisingly small amount of games firing a gun while running actually feels like a risk and it really adds to the chaos. Clip reloading is another system that punishes you for panic reloading (something I had to learn) and the game has a difficulty scale ranging from almost pointlessly easy to effectively being a stealth game because if you get caught you'll get so piled up on you are inevitably going to chain die repeatedly. In solo, anyway. The chaos is unparalelled and it just really feels like things go to hell really quick, it's super exciting, and when you pull off a clutch strategem it feels Great. Basically everything about playing the game is fantastic.
The galactic war thing giving overarching goals for the playerbase is also really fun and I fuckin Love communally filling a meter so there's no complaints there. Also fantastic.
I have one complaint. One specific (and ultimately not really that important) aspect of the progression is much harder then the others, to the point of pushing less skilled/solo players Really hard. The game is intended as multiplayer. I have no qualms with the intended multiplayer focus. Maybe I am being unfair by making the comparison that I am about to make, but I wish it had handled the entire thing a bit more like deep rock galactic.
In deep rock galactic when you solo you get a little drone buddy named Bosco and he will shoot bugs for you, he'll mine for you, he'll generally help you out and is surprisingly competent which makes single player playable, and a little less arduous. The experience is still far more complete with multiple players, because it was, you know, made for that, and especially in DRG the community is generally friendly enough that there's no reason not to do that, but as someone that is not always feeling up to herding cats on the internet it's nice that I can pop into solo and play the game and get more or less the same stuff a group can get, and progress my account. This on top of the fact that a failed mission still rewards you a (reduced) amount of rewards means that you're always moving forward, which is quite nice.
I've been beating around the bush long enough so here's the complaint finally. There are three different avenues to upgrading your account.
Medals, which you just get from clearing missions, no complaints there. These unlock new gear and cosmetics for the essentially battle pass. Battle passes never vanish so the battle pass model is essentially just there so they can do content drops.
Requisition slips are number two, and much like medals you just get them by finishing missions. Again no complaints; they unlock strategems (active abilities you can use in missions), and are quite important to playing the game at higher difficulties, because heavy enemies are surprisingly weak to your non strategem equipment.
Samples. Here's the issue. First, when you die, you drop your samples. If you finish the mission, and die during extraction, you might "succeed" the mission, but you are not getting those valuable valuable samples. This really isn't the biggest deal, but it plays into part two. Part two is that higher grade samples spawn exclusively on higher difficulties; 4 and 7 to be precise. This is the issue. You can really break your back trying to get a decent amount of rare samples only to get thumped because the game dropped 3-4 heavies on you during extraction.
Now it's not the worst thing in the world, the passive tree is ultimately probably the least impactful upgrade segment out of the three, and you can get them solo with enough effort, but it feels very gatekeep-ey and almost (don't take this next part too seriously now) mean spirited.
It's just baffling because much like DRG I think helldivers is a Fantastic multiplayer game, and as a result I don't think they have to gate materials like this other then a weird insistence that only players above a certain skill level can get the full passive tree. There are multiplayer players saying they can't really get the higher tier samples because they're not good enough, and it feels like the sort've thing that creates needless friction. Hopefully they'll eventually introduce a way to get higher samples at a reduced rate, so, much like DRG, even if you're hobbling through the lower difficulties you can eventually nickle and dime your way to upgrades.
I dunno! I'm really enjoying the game, but when I drop samples right at the end and I get a small portion of progression yanked out of my hands it feels real bad. That's essentially my one complaint. If you've got people to play with then it's a great game to grab.

Check In Post
first off the cat post is making the rounds again
second of all while I've not really done a whole lot since the last post I am starting to feel the positive effects from like not being on social media all the time and perhaps I will even eventually get back to pixeling as I'm finally getting around to doing studies again like I said I should do like a hundred years ago
so that's good
growing increasingly fond of minimalist game boy pixel art and starting to get a little less hype about extremely detailed pixel art; final fantasy legend 2 aka SaGa 2 GB has some really charming little dudes in it for instance
I think replaying kero blaster recently finally flipped that switch in my brain; pixel really knows how to make a good looking game with like a 100x160 size window or whatever
(play kero blaster)
I also think I've gotten a good handle on helldivers II and will be making an off the cuff post about it later today describing my experience with it; it is a good game and it is a multiplayer game (much more then DRG, to my dismay) but the progression system gets more and more obnoxious every time I log on
but more about that in a second post
as a reward for reading through this post have a link to a twitter thread that is about mario 64 supposedly being a freemason and illuminati ritual
I don't know if it's secretly a big shitpost by someone with an interest in the field or not but it's a fun read anyway

a weird little thing I saw today was that ghost ship games (deep rock galactic), red hook studios (darkest dungeon) and all sorts of other indie devs responsible for Big Hits in the past five years or so (risk of rain, brotato, slay the spire, vampire survivors, v rising, etc) have posted a tweet or notification regarding a new thing called The iii Initiative
a lot of people are suspecting it's a sort've indie publishing union of some kind (I'm saying union because ghost ship games already has a publishing house, so like, unless they're merging into it??) which would essentially make it The New Devolver/New Blood
there are also much more mundane suggestions of a big collab game or something
either way interesting

It's Finally Happened; I am adjusting my social media habits
I'm going to be on social media less. I'm mostly looking to get rid of my reflexive habit if opening tumblr/twitter and reading through it for fifteen minutes every hour and a half or so.
It also means when I do post, I'll be posting something that's actually, like, a thing. Me talking about something that's happened, or posting something I've made, or written, or recorded or whatever. When I do this I might buzz around and reblog a bit, but again I'm not going to be doing it for more then a "session" essentially. Part of this is also attempting to sever my weird obsession with notes. It's never gotten too bad but especially with creative stuff I would feel bad if it did not get internet points. Which is dumb. Hopefully this'll allow me to post more of my creative shit without feeling nude. Or feeling less nude, at any rate.
Ultimately social media is effecting my personal perception of the world more then I'd like, and I think it's also negatively effecting my perception of myself. I'm not trying to get rid of it entirely, but I am trying to purge the internet brainrot. I'm also using this as an opportunity to be more social in general, talking to people I've not spoken to in a while on discord, doing multiplayer stuff more often, etc etc. If you've been on my discord for years and I've never spoken to you; Maybe I Will Now, Do Not Be Afraid.
I will still be on discord, and I will still pop on now and then to check for people asking for my Discord. If you want to keep tabs on me on a personal level, just ask for my discord.
That's that. Ta Ta for now, internet. I'll be back at some point with something I'm sure.
I've also updated my sticky post with more stuff you can find me on. A steam curator page for one. I've actually been running it for a while, and just never posted it. If you're interested in my opinions about video games, feel free to go there.

I completely flooded the back of house today and everyone failed to react like a human. The person who noticed tried to alert me by standing directly behind me, pointing at the floor, and going ‘water’. And when I turned and looked, all I could muster was ‘oh thats cool.’ Really calmly.
And then my manager darted for the mop bucket like CAN YOU TWO DO SOMETHJNG PLEASE STOP JUST WATCHING IT

doing some liu theorycrafting
assuming hong liu's passive consistently applies to one slot you could hook him up so he's in the backline and his support passive is applying to rodya (assuming everyone's at 45); this would give her AoE burn sk2 count generation which is an incredible way to improve burn DPS (edit: earlier team slots take priority so if you put Liu Rodya in slot one, select her first and then the rest of the team in short, she'll get the benefit from hong liu's support passive)
you could swap faust in to get 9:2 (more on this later)
liu has some incredible wrath resonance potential with rodya 4th match flame applying 3 wrath vuln, ishmael capote applying 1 wrath damage up to the entire team, faust 9:2 (if the hong lu fiddling works) applying about 30% generic damage up from the defense down debuff
on top of all this ryoshu has 4th match flame which gets up to 100% damage boost from burn potency
all of these EGOs are wrath except faust 9:2 and speaking from experience ryoshu is pretty slow for a liu ID so she does tend to land at the end of the chain
with the new additions liu is very good at single target burn and this is really only adding even more to it
setting all this up a turn before the stagger hits would make for some incredible burst

This took forever to get the hose right. I did the front part of the hose first and because of the way it moves it kinda pulls the back part around the loop. The animation really helps to visually separate the components, too.
