New updates for Sonic Frontiers for 2023 announced, teases new playable characters

In an unexpected update, the official Sonic the Hedgehog social media has confirmed that new updates are on their way to Sonic Frontiers, with three batches.

The one that grabbed fans' attention the most is one teasing the possibility of Tails, Knuckles and Amy being playable in a future update.

Sonic fans unite for Sonic Frontiers to be nominated for Best Original Soundtrack on The Steam Awards

The period in which gaming fans can choose what games get nominated for The Steam Awards has recently begun, with Sonic fans around the world beggining a campaign to get Sonic Frontiers, the newest mainline Sonic game, nominated.

The award that fans have been pushing for the most has been the "Best Soundtrack" category. The game's music has received praise from different outlets and fans.

In order to get the game nominated, fans have to visit the Steam Awards page, and select the categories that Sonic Frontiers deserve the most.

The voting period runs from 22 November to 29 November.

Super Shadow coming to Sonic Forces Speed Battle

In order to celebrate Sonic Forces: Speed Battle's 5th anniversary, the character Super Shadow is joining the race.

As usual, players will join the new event to unlock cards for the brand new runner. Free gifts of special cards will be given throughout the event through the in-game store.

Players will also find Gold Rings in Event rewards for the whole of this upcoming event.

The following items will be present:

Lightning: "Hits your leading opponent with a short, sharp shock, making them drop an item."

Super Form: "After collecting enough Gold Rings, transform into Super Form and blast down the track at incredible speeds!"

Storm Cloud: "A burst of bad weather that zaps any runners passing through it, removing an item."

This event will run between 22 November to 04 December.

Yuji Naka, Sonic the Hedgehog Co-Creator, arrested due to leaking confidential Square Enix documents

Yuji Naka (57), Sonic the Hedgehog Co-Creator, has been arrested by The Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office, due to connections with an insider dedicated to leaking information for the newest title of the popular series "Dragon Quest."

According to the special investigation unit, Naka was an employee of the game company Square Enix, which was in a partnership with a Online Game Production Company named Aiming around January 2020. It has been believed that he got his hands in confidential information of the latest mobile Dragon Quest game, "Dragon Quest Tact".

The suspect is said to have bought about 10,000 shares of "Aiming" for about 2.8 million yen before the information was officially announced. Naka was arrested for insider trading under the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act.

The sources that relayed this confidential information to Naka, Taisuke Sasaki (38), a former employee of Square Enix, and Fumiaki Suzuki (40), an acquaintance, were also arrested yesterday (August 16) on suspicion of insider trading. It is believed that the two purchased about 162,000 shares of Aiming for about 47.2 million yen.

All three of them are believed to have bought shares in Aiming, believing that when the reveal of "Dragon Quest Tact" arrived, the share price of Aiming would rise, bringing more money to them.

Hello, I’m back.

Sorry for the long time inactive, but if I could put it succintly:

I recently moved to Japan, to try my luck with some dreams of mine, I began working, studying, taking art comissions and dedicating the rest of the time I had to Tails’ Channel, I couldn’t singlehandedly run a Sonic news blog anymore. Just didn’t have the time I used to.

I recently have been reorganizing how I handle my time, and I want to be more present here. I don’t know how that will be like, but I sincerely apologize to those that have followed me.

Takashi Iizuka talks more details about Sonic Frontiers in interview with IGN

As the month long IGN First event takes place, more announcements and details related to Sonic’s next main game, Sonic Frontiers, have been announced.

This time, an interview was made with Sonic Studio Creative Officer, Takashi Iizuka. The Sonic series veteran has relayed some features of the “open zone” game and what gamers can expect from it.

Sonic Frontiers, and the inspiration for it

After working on Sonic Forces, Iizuka felt that the team was somewhat restricted by the linearity Sonic games usually present, and wanted this time to do something that gave the player more freedom.

Iizuka stated that there was “little room for evolution on a traditional 3D Sonic game”, and felt that the team would only be able to make games that players have already seen before.

When talking about the story for the upcoming game, Iizuka said that they usually are about “something bad has happened, fix it!”, but this time, the game is about a mystery that Sonic and the player will solve together.

The soundtrack for Frontiers has less focus on upbeat tracks that match a given stage. It’s focused on creating a mysterious feeling surrounding the islands.

While Frontiers will be focused on an open zone adventure, Iizuka has reassured fans of traditional linear 3D Sonic games that the new game will have content made for these players as well.

Balancing open-zone and traditional levels

When asked about having open-zone and traditional levels on the same game, Iizuka had the following to say:

Fans of traditional modern Sonic 3D action should enjoy these. They’ll be able to use the techniques and actions they’ve learned to beat them. By merging these open zones and traditional 3D action stages into the same islands, players will be able to enjoy a broad variety of 3D action than before.

Sonic Adventure series and connections to Sonic Frontiers

Iizuka commented that Frontiers had some resemblance to Sonic Adventure, in the way how Adventure had smaller open spaces known as Adventure Fields. The team has used what they learned with those areas in the first Adventure title, and applied it to some level in Sonic Frontiers.

While Iizuka made clear that while he doesn’t know what the next game will be about, he expressed a desire to return to return to the Sonic Adventure series.

The Creative Officer expressed that it would be “nice”, if the team uses what they learned on Frontiers for a new Sonic Adventure installment.

Sonic Frontiers is expected to be released Holiday 2022 for current and next-generation PlayStation and Xbox platforms, Nintendo Switch, and on PC via Epic Games Store and Steam.
