'It's used to buy time': Doctors denounce Alberta government's policy on puberty blockers
'By denying people access to puberty blockers, they will have to go through puberty — which is irreversible. Then, if they decide they want to move to the next step, they will have to do gender-affirming surgery ... and it becomes much more invasive'
Tumblr media
While the Alberta government has billed proposed changes to care for transgender and nonbinary children as a bid to retain important medical decisions for adulthood, some health-care professionals say one of the best ways to do that will soon be prohibited. Among the sweeping changes put forward by Premier Danielle Smith’s government earlier this month is a ban on puberty blockers for those 15 and under — trans youths aged 16 or 17 would require parental consent. Federal Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre has gone a step further, saying the treatment should only be provided to those 18 and older.

Nearly one-third of Albertans believe the proposed policy changes regarding care for transgender youth are an attack on them and represent a danger, a recent poll by Leger suggests. The poll‘s method involved an online survey of just over 1,000 Albertans, and the questions were on the changes proposed by Premier Danielle Smith in recent weeks. The poll shows how divided people are on the issue.

Former deputy premier Sarah Hoffman and NDP MLA for Edmonton-Glenora, held a news conference in Edmonton on Sunday morning, launching her leadership campaign. The 43-year-old joins fellow MLAs, Kathleen Ganley and Rakhi Pancholi, in the race to replace Rachel Notley as leader of the NDP. “I’m so happy to be here at Woodcroft Hall which is where my elected provincial career began and together we beat a conservative cabinet minister and we formed the very first NDP government in Alberta history,” Hoffman told the crowd. “Lets do it again, we must do it again.” New democrats are essential to solving the problems that face us today, we must fix public health care,” Hoffman continued.

RECALL POST! huge listeria outbreak in the US & canada that has been ongoing for YEARS, with dozens of foods recalled!
posted february 10, 2024
fucking hell. what the fuck. CLICK THE LINKS FOR MORE INFORMATION, INCLUDING SPECIFIC PRODUCTS. there will be more updates. this recall is ongoing and more products are being recalled by the day.
"The FDA and CDC, in collaboration with state and local partners, are investigating illnesses in a multi-year, multistate outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections linked to queso fresco and cotija cheeses manufactured by Rizo Lopez Foods, Inc., of Modesto, California.
This outbreak includes cases dating back to 2014 and is currently ongoing."
DATING BACK TO -> 2014 <-
listeriosis, the infection caused by listeria, can become very serious, and can cause death, miscarriage, and lifelong disability. most infections are not severe. listeria typically makes you sick within 2 weeks of exposure, but it can take as long as 3 months after being exposed to get sick. listeria is the third leading cause of foodborne illness deaths in the united states, and there have been confirmed deaths from this outbreak.
rizo-lopez foods supplies dairy ingredients to dozens of different brands making dozens of different types of foods across the entire country.
recalled products include:
salad kits and salad dressing
taco kits
bean dips and salsa
corn bites
cojita cheese, queso fresco cheese, ricotta cheese
sour cream and yogurt
sandwiches and wraps
other freshly made foods
...and other products containing dairy ingredients sourced from rizo-lopez foods, from brand names such as
Bright Farms, Campesino, Casa Cardenas, Dole, Don Francisco, Don Pancho, Dos Ranchitos, El Huache, Food City, Fresh Express, H-E-B, La Ordena, Marketside, President’s Choice, Ready Pac Bistro, Rio Grande, Rizo Bros, Rojos, San Carlos, Santa Maria, Tio Francisco, Trader Joe’s, 365 Whole Foods Market.
and freshly made food from various stores. for a good chunk of these products, all prior expiration dates are being recalled. many of these foods have been potentially contaminated for years.
directions from the CDC:
Do not eat any recalled products.
Throw them away or return them to where you bought them.
Clean the refrigerator, containers, and surfaces that may have touched the recalled products.
Listeria can survive in the refrigerator and can easily spread to other foods and surfaces.
Call a healthcare provider right away if you have these symptoms after eating recalled products:
Pregnant people usually have fever, muscle aches, and tiredness.
People who are not pregnant usually have fever, muscle aches, and tiredness. They may also get a headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or seizures.
"Listeria is especially harmful to people who are pregnant, aged 65 or older, or have weakened immune systems. This is because Listeria is more likely to spread beyond their gut to other parts of their body, resulting in a severe condition known as invasive listeriosis."
you can check the ongoing list of recalled products as well as more information about the outbreak in the US through the FDA link or the CDC link.
for canada: the canadian recalls link to the US FDA + CDC investigation for more detailed information, but you can keep track of rizo-lopez recalls in canada here.
check your fridge, check your freezer, check your emails and voicemails for recall notifications, check in on others, clean contaminated surfaces thoroughly, and stay safe. do NOT fuck with listeria!

https://edmontonjournal.com/news/politics/were-terrified-hundreds-rally-in-support-of-alberta-trans-community-opposition-to-coming-government-gender-policies
Hundreds rallied near Whyte Avenue in Edmonton on Saturday in opposition to the provincial government’s proposed series of new policies regarding children and LGBTQ+ rights.
The forthcoming changes, revealed by Premier Danielle Smith in a seven-minute video posted to social media on Wednesday, include bans on gender reassignment surgery for those aged under 17, on hormone therapy for children aged 15 and under, and also introduced plans to explore limits on sports participation for transgender athletes.
The crowd gathered just after noon around the gazebo at Dr. Wilbert McIntyre Park while touting signs and chanting slogans calling on the premier to reverse her plans.
Rally organizer Rowan Morris, a 23-year-old transgender person, said the changes put others like him at risk, adding, “trans people everywhere are terrified.”
“If Smith truly cared about trans youth she would not make it illegal to support them,” Morris said.
“We’re terrified because we’re watching the next generation of our community lose the ability to grow up as themselves.”

A Plains Cree physician who practices family medicine in Alberta says it’s shameful that Conservative Premier Danielle Smith is playing politics with transgender issues.
“It’s really important to know that people don’t do this [gender affirmation] lightly,” said Dr. James Makokis, who identifies as Two-Spirit and works directly with trans patients. “It is something that they’ve known their entire life.
“And clinicians do thorough assessments of ensuring that people when they say they’re trans, they’re trans and we just ensure that there’s not medical contra-indications to doing so and there is a thorough assessment process of that.”
On Wednesday, Smith announced a number of policy changes on social media that will restrict medical access to those seeking gender affirmation therapy – especially transgender youth.

Not socialist in a “I won’t have to work” type of way but socialist in a “I’ll still be working but I won’t be worried I won’t make the rent” type of way. In a “billions won’t be hoarded by one person” type of way. In a “janitors, fast-food workers, child care workers, preschool teachers, hotel clerks, personal care and home health aides, and grocery store cashiers, will live comfortably” type of way. In a “the sick and elderly will be cared for” type of way. In a “no child should work” type of way.

Former premier Rachel Notley, the leader of the Alberta NDP and Official Opposition, is stepping down. “Having considered what I believe to be the best interests of our party, our caucus, as well as my own preferences, I am here today to announce that I will not be leading Alberta’s NDP into the next election,” she said Tuesday afternoon. Notley said she’ll stay on until there’s a leadership race and vote for a new Alberta NDP leader, and that she’ll support the new leader. Once a new leader is chosen, she’ll step down from the leadership role.

It feels taboo as a childfree person to admit this but I actually do have concerns about who is going to take care of me when I'm old. The elder care system in our nation relies A LOT on the unpaid care labor of adult children. I just don't think that's a good reason to have kids.
"But you'll have more money!" does not completely put this to rest for me. Neither does "Buy care insurance!" Even if I can afford direct personal care, who is going to advocate for me to get it? Who is going to navigate bureaucracy for me when I'm 80?
"If you do have kids, there's no GUARANTEE that they'll take care of you when your old!" That's true, but doesn't solve my problem.
I think childfree people get very defensive about this question because its used as a kind of "gotcha!" against us, but I actually do not feel we can afford to be in denial about this reality. Based on current trends of more people in their 30s stating they intend to be permanently childfree, we are going to see a huge wave of childfree adults hitting the eldercare system at once in a few decades. Childfree people in their 30s should be advocating around eldercare NOW.

Premier Danielle Smith’s government has rejected a proposal that would have compelled it to respect the results of a referendum on whether Alberta should quit the Canada Pension Plan. The United Conservative government used its majority in the house Wednesday to vote down an Opposition NDP amendment to Bill 2 — the Alberta Pension Protection Act — that would have forced the government to abide by the results of such a plebiscite. Finance Minister Nate Horner has said the goal of Bill 2 is to provide a process for a referendum while not tying the hands of future governments.
