if his parents knew what he'd done, they would have killed him. even the name seed was like a sin in and of itself in the duncan household — he was lucky to be given a better chance at life. it left such a bitter taste on his tongue, a nausea in the pit of his stomach.

they didn't know he'd gone back to georgia, but not for a home visit, away from the safety of the expensive university attempting to shape him into a lawyer to be proud of.

he pulls a piece of crumpled paper from his pocket, checking the address again, before looking back up at the numbers beside the door. what if the trail was cold? what if it weren't him? worse, what if he wanted nothing to do with him? he's not used to this type of nervousness. shoving the paper back in his pocket, he lifts his hand and knocks, holding his breath.

he exhales a frustrated grunt as his back hits the floor, reflexive, as blue eyes dart up to meet ivy's. john's chest rises and falls with irritated breaths, jaw clenched dangerously tight ( teeth pressed together, when they'd rather nip at the skin of her lip, her throat ). he wets his lips, narrowing a glare, despite her threat, despite the rush that fills his blood. he wants to dig his fingers into her hips, wants to leave bruising fingerprints on her skin.

he doesn't toy with fire in fear that it'll burn him ( often, he wants it to. just as much as he wants to stomp it out ). his life is surrounded by risks. ❝ touchy, ❞ he taunts, as if he hadn't tried to pull anger from her, to test her. there's curiosity, desperate to know if he could weaken her, if she'd wilt for him. his desires are crossed, wrath and lust wrapped around his every impulse. john's hand snaps around her wrist with no interest in trying to shove her off.

i always think about how despite how much john enjoys wealth to some extent, appreciates designer and custom-made clothing, nice cars, and owning his own fucking plane, he's also very judgmental of greed. there's some self-loathing to it. and no matter which verse (although, his main verse is far more outspoken against greed and consumerism, despite indulging in both), he has a sense of anger and disgust for people with excessive wealth. he mostly wants to see them fall.

is it hypocritical? oh, absolutely in a lot of ways. is he enacting some of his self-hatred on others? yeah!

but also, he blends in with the money crowd to cause harm. in all his verses, he loves blackmailing the rich. he likes blending in and being trusted, to seem like one of them, just to watch them fall apart later.

he spent most of his life with money and excess, while also being preached at about humility and charity, while watching his parents and members of the church line their pockets more than anyone else's.

he's treated like a charity case himself and had it drilled that he should be grateful for the life the duncans gave him (despite it being absolute hell), because they were kind of enough to adopt him, that he was no longer in poverty. he loathes the amount of shame they made him feel for being born to his biological family (especially when he desperately misses his brothers).

he doesn't deem money as more important than simpler things, but he also likes to have a good time.
