I’ve been seeing just. The wildest takes about AO3 this donation cycle and I’m at my limit. I just saw a post claiming that AO3 isn’t a real archive, that it’s a scam, because there’s no quality control like a real, legitimate archive would have, that they just let in any old trash. And that this makes AO3 not worthy of anyone’s money or respect.
And you know what? It’s true! AO3 does let in any old trash! People can just post whatever the hell they want. And you know what? An ad-free, free-to-use website where people writing fanfiction, in their free time for no money, can upload their work with no hassle or exclusive vetting process, that also happens to be a highly popular and well-known fanfic repository for every fandom under the sun? WITH a robust and well-curated tagging system, too? That’s the dream. I’m glad they let anyone upload whatever weird trash they want. GOOD.

oh god it's that time of the year again, so here are some quick reminders:
The content allowed on AO3 is legal according to American law. This is a sensible place to draw the line when your explicitly stated aim is to have a fanfiction site where the content is not subjected to random purges for obscure reasons
AO3 is run by a non-profit organisation. Nobody is making any money out of this, and when the donation drive goal is exceeded, excess money will go to running the site in the future and fighting potential legal battles for the right to create fanworks
It's possible to donate to AO3 and various charities etc, stop acting as though every cent donated to AO3 is a cent taken from "people who need it more"
"Fiction affects reality" yes but the fiction that actually has a societal impact is the latest heteronormative, subtly racist, mass marketed drivel from Disney, not that one properly tagged incest PWP fic with 150 hits and 40 kudos on AO3

I get why people are coming after ao3, I really do.
I am ALSO not happy with the rpf and incest and sexual content of children.
If I had my way, none of that would be there because it wouldn’t exist. The problem is, there are millions of users on ao3 and there are millions of fics. Those can’t be completely, 100% regulated.
Ao3 as a site prioritizes its readers’ safety over hosting only “moral” fics. The tagging system exists so that users can block out any content that might trigger them. The proposed solution here would be to either make the people working at ao3 go through every single reported fic (which would take a REALLY LONG TIME, I’m sure) or to simply remove all fics tagged with warnings and “undesirable” tags.
This will make the problem worse. If writers of these types of fics can’t upload their fics tagged, they will upload them untagged. Unsuspecting readers WILL accidentally read incest, and sexual content depicting minors, without their knowledge.
Not even to mention that many fics tagged with the warnings are not as clear cut as you might think. There are PLENTY of noncon fics that are not romanticizing it but using it as a plot device for character development. Plenty of these fics are writers venting about their own experiences by projecting on characters they love.
Ao3 is an archive. It is supposed to collect fics from various fandoms, not decide which fics are moral enough to be on the site. There are plenty of mainstream books, tv shows, and movies that address this stuff. If it could be present in a book in the library, why can it not be present in a fic on ao3?
I’m sorry, I don’t really care about how you feel about this stuff *existing* on a site. None of you seem to have real solutions that would protect unsuspecting readers from reading these things, you just want to be able to act like it’s not there.
If you think there is illegal stuff on this website, take it up with the government. If you think it’s just immoral, get off your high horse and realize there are reasons ao3 isn’t banning all the tags and deleting fics.

I love how “loose white shirt, high-waisted pants” is THE go-to pseudo-historical costume for every single genre, despite no one at any point in history actually wearing clothing like that except as undergarments.

Sometimes I want to combine popular video game genres in really stupid ways. Like… say, a roguelike battle royale platform fighter. It’d be like a 100-player free-for-all version of Super Smash Bros in permanent sudden death mode, and you get dropped into each battle with a character with a completely randomly generated moveset. You literally have no idea what your special attack button is going to do until the first time you press it. Just fucking go for it.
