someone: the 'you are light' scene from hxh is overrated and toxic
me, an intellectual: killua's inner monologue of: "gon, you are light, sometimes you shine so brightly i must look away," is effectively him cementing his skewed perception of gon into something frighteningly permanent. killua-- who sees himself as a foil of gon-- believes himself to be dark, lightless thing, someone who's already long since lost the innocence that he has found again, or believes he's found, in gon, this seemingly golden, island, seaside-boy. he knows gon is wrong about kite. he knows gon is being foolish and reckless and wrong. but twelve-year-old boys are allowed to be these things, things killua never had been allowed the chance to be. he's placed gon on a pedestal, he's let himself believe that gon's innocence, his light, is something killua must protect. killua cannot lose that innocence twice. so he follows gon into hell, lets himself believe it's anything but. because he loves gon, and he reckons that the only way he can give that love is by protecting him, from the sidelines, in the darkness. sometimes it's painful to be met with that bright, brash childishness. but even so, killua wonders, for the both of them: "is it alright if i stay by your side?"

Killua, July 7th, and the significance of his birthdate
This is one of those things that I thought was something most of the fandom had picked up on, but recently realized might not be the case. For people who watch A Lot of anime/read a lot of manga, you might be going “Jesus Dave why do you feel the need to make a post about something so obvious???” But not everyone has this knowledge that relies on an understanding of specific folklore and a related holiday! So let’s begin with a basic bit of information.
As it turns out, the main cast all have Significant Birthdays with a clear pattern to them. Most people know this part of it - that Leorio’s birthday is 3/3 and it goes onward from there with Kurapika - 4/4, Gon - 5/5, Hisoka - 6/6(/6), and then finally Killua - 7/7.

Probably irrelevant info but just cool trivia maybe, because I was thinking about it!
Hunter x Hunter is pretty vague on what year the series is meant to take place in, no doubt helped along by how long the series has been running + changes in technology, etc. But at one point in the series we are given a year - when Chrollo asks Nobunaga his birthday in the Yorkshin Arc, Nobunaga gives it as September 8th, 1970 (in the manga at least, I believe the 2011 anime removes the year).
Nobunaga is 30 years old at his first appearance, making it easy math to discern that the manga begins in the year 2000 in-universe (though we don’t know what happened to make the year 0 year 0 in the world’s calendar system).
So with that in mind, the birthdays of each character are ‘canonically’ (based on that math at least):
Gon: May 5th, 1988
Killua: July 7th, 1988
Leorio: March 3rd, 1981
Kurapika: April 4th, 1983
Hisoka: June 6th, 1972
Which gives us some more potential trivia re: the characters beyond things like blood type and Western zodiac, namely what year they were born in for the Chinese zodiac. From this you’d find that:
Gon and Killua: year of the dragon, associated element yang + earth
Leorio: year of the rooster, associated element yin + metal
Kurapika: the year of the pig, associated element yang + water
Hisoka: the year of the rat, associated element yang + water
Chinese zodiac animal assignment does not rely solely on year though, there are also ones based on month, day (of the week), and hour. We can’t say all of these - what hour was Gon Freecss born? What day of the week? Who knows. But some we do know enough for!
So based on month (unlike years which cycle elements and animals separately, months have elements that are always the same), we add to the year animals:
Gon: May 5th - Snake, fixed element of fire
Killua: July 7th - Goat, fixed element of earth
Leorio: March 3rd - Tiger, fixed element of wood
Kurapika: April 4th - Rabbit, fixed element of wood
Hisoka: June 6th - Horse, fixed element of fire
For the record, here are their blood types (from the 2004 databook):
Gon: Type B
Killua: Type A
Leorio: Type O
Kurapika: Type AB
Hisoka: Type B
And here are their Western zodiac signs:
Gon: Taurus
Killua: Cancer
Leorio: Pisces
Kurapika: Aries
Hisoka: Gemini (of course)
I doubt anything but their blood types have any correlation with their personalities, though!

Random stranger: Hunter x Hunter is so anticlimactic! The way it ends arcs is such a let-down!
Me: *Resists urge to write multi-page meta reply about Togashi’s intentional and thought-provoking use of anticlimax which acts in contrast with and subverts traditional shounen narrative expectations*

good morning, it’s 7:40am on a holiday and the newest thing that hurts my feelings about hunter x hunter is that each of the main quartet’s arc/motivations centers directly around the worth of a human life. like we got leorio ‘i say even lives can be bought and explicitly go on to say i need money because if i could’ve paid for my friend’s medical treatment he’d still be alive today’ paladiknight, kurapika here like ‘my entire family and culture are dead because  one part of their body was deemed more valuable than their entire lives,’ killua ‘i’m escaping from a family that literally evaluates people based on how much they are worth to kill’ zoldyck, and gon freecs here like ‘why didn’t my father stay. why was i not worth it’
