Chick and her friend visited El Morro (Castillo San Felipe del Morro) in old San Juan. The Spanish began building this fortress in 1539 (and concluded in 1790) and it served as protection against invasions from the British, the Dutch, and pirates. (She may or may not have imagined being in Pirates of the Caribbean while she was there).
They also walked through Viejo San Juan, enjoying the architecture and atmosphere (though it was pretty hot).

Chick’s fern identification capacities don’t extend far enough to tell you what she was climbing on in El Yunque, but she didn’t need to know the name to think it was awesome.

Last week, Chick and her friend and his family headed south, way south) and east to visit Puerto Rico 🇵🇷! Chick was mesmerized by the in flight progress on the video screen, as well as occasional glimpses of what she presumed were the Bahamas.

Chick has been loving getting to work with the exhibition Stephen Towns: Declaration & Resistance with paintings and quilts by Stephen Towns and curated by Kilolo Luckett. Reynolda House is hosting the exhibition through May 14, 2023 - come see it if you are in or near North Carolina!
Chick is here with some of her favorites:
1️⃣ Ona Judge Escapes, 2021. Natural and synthetic fabric, polyester and cotton thread, crystal glass beads, resin buttons. Read Never Caught, by @ericaarmstrongdunbar to learn more about the fascinating story of Ona Judge and her self-emancipation (I read the young readers edition she wrote with Kathleen Van Cleve)
2️⃣ Built of Rich Earth, 2020. oil, acrylic, fabric, buttons, Bristol paper, mica flakes, graphite, glitter, and charcoal on panel
3️⃣ Flora and Lillie, 2022. Acrylic, oil, metal leaf on panel

Here’s hoping the early morning flight will result in on-time arrival at home. In the meantime, Chick is going to take a little nap on my backpack.

Every day in San Antonio, Chick has spent some time along the riverwalk. She’s grateful for all the work that went/goes into designing and maintaining moments of beauty throughout!

Yesterday, Chick (or is she ‘polluelo’ o ‘pajarita’ in San Antonio?) spent much of the day at the McNay Art Museum, a house turned museum of European and American art. While the architecture and collecting history is different from her favorite historic house/art museum, Reynolda House, it felt familiar in ways. This courtyard was one of her favorite areas. PS the hat we found her when we had the Georgia O’Keeffe exhibition has proved very helpful under this Texan sun.

Yesterday, Chick and I had the most lovely afternoon at the San Antonio Botanical Garden! We wished we had water shoes to play in the children’s garden “river,” but we were delighted by the plants and the Native Texan Trail (replete with an area to watch birds—we saw a white winged dove and a black crested titmouse!). She particularly wanted you all to see the bloom on this gastaria carinata, and she loved the rocks in the desert plant exhibit.

You would think that, when flying from North Carolina to Texas, Chick would not get such an eastern view during her flight. But, she’s going the circuitous route via Chicago…

One of Chick’s friends is doing a hard, brave thing today. For that friend and everyone else pushing themselves to do the hard thing, the right thing, the new thing, making the choice towards mental health, towards healing, towards reconciliation—whatever uncomfortable thing it may be you are facing—Chick sends love and light.

Chick is grateful for many, many things—one of which today is that she lives near enough to family that she can gather with a group today and only has to worry about how to keep the food warm from her oven until it reaches the buffet. (And maybe how to fit the pies into the car without any damage…)
Happy Thanksgiving, friends!
