The Giselle metaphor for the CCC event is more fitting than one might think. It’s just that, when the event starts, we’re unknowingly starting at Act II. Meltryllis has gone back and wounded herself in a way that is slowly but surely fatal (Giselle’s death), and must now save you from your death at the hands of Kiara (Queen Myrtha). And as Giselle saves Albrecht from the fatal last dance by moving at a pace he can keep up with, Meltryllis ensures Ritsuka’s victory by doing things in the way she’s certain they’d prefer (which she’s correct in assuming). To paraphrase, a gentler way, more befitting of Ritsuka.

Of course, this also means the event would only end one way. Indeed, could only ever end one way. Giselle has to move on, and Melt must sacrifice herself. Emotionally, it’s a bitter taste, knowing the woman who was your staunchest ally and supporter throughout SE.RA.PH could never remain. But thematically, there are few better ways to go.

the social realist irony of sun jing's father listing out qualities that are specifically associated with women's gender construct in a casual conversation vs. how these boxes of activities sun jing is allowed to perform, hence as her father narrates desirable qualities in a woman (with the repetition of "my daughter" echoing throughout chapter 189) casually reflects how, even subliminally, gender performance is dictated by the patriarchal narrative. it's also that if a woman were to live freely, it would still be under the determinism of heteropatriarchy; if she were to eschew from it, she would be at fault for having agency: even when her agency is an illusion of boxes to walk on like an arcade game. for sun jing's father to put standards for her before she was born symbolizes how womanhood is predetermined by those who live outside it; cementing this illusion of women's relationship with femininity inherent. i think the emphasis on assault in tamen de gushi also represents how asian women are disproportionately trafficked and fetishized under male gaze, even though this chapter emphasizes on an issue that leans toward constructs of white femininity, these aren't divorceable factors affecting each other.

ps: if this chapter wasn't about sun jing, and if it were another person, then it could also suggest that this is a communal double standard women share.
