Ride 26 and 27

Much better rides than our last. Trail buddy is back for about 2 weeks this time, so we’ve been riding a bit more. The weather has not been cooperative, but it’s much easier to keep calm when Stella is around.

Despite being better, it is still spring, and the girls both had their moments. Stella actually had a large spook on Sunday, but recovered well. Luna had no large spooks and only a few little moments of tossing her head. She handled Stella’s spooking with a lot of grace as well.

I was really hoping to get a haul out in during these two weeks but it looks like thunderstorms all weekend. I’m hoping next Tuesday stays clear enough that we’ll be able to go somewhere for the very end of April.

4/14/24 - It was a bad ride today.

It was *hot* at 85F so I figured we’d have a chill little jaunt around the hay field. The sheep are still fairly new so we walked past them on the ground first, and walked the whole field after. Once I mounted up the barn owner brought out the bobcat, so we followed him around for a while as he dumped stuff on the burn pile. After that we headed out.

She’s usually quite slow in the first stretch, but today she would only take a few steps and stop and stare in the distance. After her 4th stop I asked her to walk on faster, and when she didn’t I gave her a little bump with my leg and she spooked hard and tried to scoot out from under me. Admittedly it was a harder bump than I normally give her, but it wasn’t super hard, and I’m pretty sure her reaction was just because she wasn’t paying attention. I figured we’d get a little energy out and we took it at a slow trot till we reached the next corner. It can be a pretty spooky corner, but today she had a whole duck and spin and tried to take off back to the barn. She unseated me pretty badly both times, and I got way overwhelmed after the second spook and yelled at her while crying. Likely due to my overly emotional reaction, she couldn’t settle after that, and I took her back home where we finished our ride in the alley.

I’m so frustrated with her, and I’m feeling guilty about my own reaction to the spooks. I want to be able to go out and ride the hay field on a regular basis, and these bad rides really set back my confidence. I know that me panicking and yelling hurts the situation as well. Unfortunately it’s supposed to storm badly all week, so I likely won’t get to rectify the situation until next weekend, and we won’t be riding alone at that point.

I think I’ll try to start coming out after work a few days during the week to ride a little more. I know were capable of having really good rides out there, I just need to prove to my horse and to myself that I can handle it.

His right foot does appear to be tied in to the stirrup, and also tied down around the ponies belly to keep it in place, rather than a traditional stirrup which hangs freely. I cannot see his left foot or stirrup but it may have a similar set up, or it could be free to allow some movement. Either way, he is showing incredible ab strength and flexibility. I imagine it's sort of like holding yourself horizontal on a dancing pole, except the pole is moving forward around 15-30mph.

8 years ago I put a deposit down on a very sad looking roan pony. These years have flown by and she’s still teaching me something new everyday. Happy 14th Birthday to one of the best ponies I know 🎂
