Almost 11 years ago I made this roleplay blog! As NIck's mun, I made the creative decision to place his birthday on February 14th. Valentine's day! ♥
Happy birthday, suit. You'd be 50 fucking years old. FIFTY!
HALF A GOD DAMN CENTURY!

Used to use Matthew Perry as a face claim for Nick's younger brother. Rest easy, mister Perry. Thanks for everything. 💕

I apologize for necromancing a very old reblog, but I found myself opening my recent activity to clear the notifications that have accumulated and since this post is making the rounds again, I’m actually seeing the response you’d left about five years ago for the first time. I really liked reading your thoughts on our favorite conman. He’s a character I’ve adored for a very long time and even though the L4D fandom has been around (and dormant) for so long, I still really love it when I get to read fresh perspectives and opinions from other fans on the gamblin’ man because I get to think about some old topics in a new light which rejuvenates my love for this guy, and also, sometimes I even get to re-learn things! In fact, I had completely forgotten that this was a cut line! This post is about eight years old now. I was digging through the Left 4 Dead 2 audio files that were buried deep in the Steam file path because I’m actually a roleplay blog! I love to write and I totally fell in love with Nick as a character. His personality is hilarious but complex and his past is mysterious: definitely a fun springboard to launch off of as a budding writer from... Wow, 2023 will be year number ten for this blog.
Anyways -- as an RP blog, one of my favorite methods to build on my characters is to locate audio files like these voice lines and obsess over these little details. Pick apart the wording and try and figure out what he might have meant by using the specific words he uses. Let myself empathize and identify where he might have been coming from, what might inspire someone to say some of the absurd things that he says. This blog is full of all kinds of, well, long-winded ramblings surrounding how I interpreted this character over the last decade and if you come across any of them, I apologize for my incoherent messes, though I hope you like what ya find!
I don’t wanna say that you’re overthinking things, because I really really like a lot of what you’re mulling over in your post, however I feel as though you have skipped over a key detail for our boy Nicky. That is: Nick is absolutely a sarcastic bastard. Much of his dialogue is sharp and condescending towards the other three (with Ellis taking the brunt of his abuse, of course). He often has a very bleak outlook on life, especially as they carry on in the adventure; however, this coping mechanism doesn’t seem to be foolproof because it gets to the point where he’s no longer exasperated by what they’re facing and now is instead experiencing pure terror in the wake of the group’s discovery that the government was actually executing non-infected people. This occurs in The Parish, right around the gauntlet horde event that happens in the second chapter. My point is, Nick is always ready to say something unexpectedly dark or twisted and I wager it’s to help himself process what he’s going through and it’s probably something he’s picked up earlier in his life due to the fact that he’s willing to turn some kind of disasterous memory (a crying bride, blood, and a wedding dress) into a sarcastic joke. Something else to consider about his established characterization is that he’s, well, a gambler: more specifically he’s a conman. He’s practically bred to lie, misdirect people that are around him, and keep most people at arm’s length. Not only this but thanks to his own deceitful nature, he’s come to expect the world to attempt to cheat and deceive him as well. We have tons of examples of Nick purposefully being vague or saying absurd things that leave you rather flabbergasted, and not only that, but we know Nick isn’t too trusting of the people they come across either (Francis, CEDA, Virgil). “You’re the first three people in the world I have ever trusted” doesn’t necessarily sound to me like a true statement. I mean, Nick was a child at some point: that’s a level of vulnerability that requires trust in somebody. It’s also worth considering the context in which this line spoken. It’s actually a line that’s chopped up from a larger conversation between Nick, Coach, and Rochelle, wondering if Virgil will come back with his boat after they land in Ducatel, Mississippi to collect gas.
Nick: Do we trust that guy to come back? Coach: Don’t think we got much choice in the matter.  [ALTERNATIVELY] Coach: He’s good people. Nick: Fair enough, but you’re the first three people in the world I have ever trusted. Rochelle: Well, I don’t know Nick. I learned to trust you. Nick: In that case, I don’t think we can trust your judgement in this matter! Coach: Look here! The gas station is right across the street! We coulda already been there and back by now. Come on!
To me, this doesn’t particularly sound like a tragic, personal admission as much as it does seem to be a sarcastic observation about the state of the human condition as things currently stand, viewed through the lens of his life experiences. That is, a dangerous and mysterious man who normally prefers to go solo has to put his life in the hands of these three perfect strangers that he has only just met: he has to trust that they’re looking out for them. This is why he appears to be kind of defensive towards Rochelle’s statement, because he’s starting to realize that he’s only alive because he’s trusted them. He’s starting to realize that they trust him to help keep them safe, too. They are a team, the four (midnight) riders of the apocalypse.  This zombie apocalypse has been a great equalizer. It doesn’t matter who Nick was before this... His slate has been wiped clean. All that matters now is these three people are his friends, people he trusts, people who trust him... Virgil is nice, but he’s not Nick’s friend.
A meaningful quote from our favorite conman.
