My favorite "Slice of Life" movies
These movies are uncomfortable in their realism and don't shy away from negative aspects of the subject matter they portray. if you're looking for a deep, maybe-unsettling movie to sit down and cry to, these are for you.
1. The Florida Project
This movie is soft and colorful - reminiscent of simpler times. despite this, the subject matter of the movie isn't as lighthearted. this film displays everyday economic and social disparities of a single mother and her child living a short distance away from Disney World, Florida. the reason I enjoy this film so much is because of how raw it was. it's loaded with improv, mostly from the children. this dialogue decision was wise because it genuinely feels real to the audience. some would call this film odd or abstract. I call it realistic.
2. Mysterious Skin
this one is probably the most uncomfortable on my list. the color-grading and general tone of this film allows it to be nostalgic, calming, and sometimes fun. this is somewhat of a juxtaposition with the plot, however. Mysterious Skin is a movie about 2 boys who get molested at a young age by the same man. the film displays the difference in reactions to the trauma that the 2 boys have; one becomes a male prostitute, and the other becomes uncomfortable with most forms of intimacy. this film does not shy away from the good, the bad, and the ugly. it's an amazing movie, but I can only watch it once.
3. Mid-90s
this movie is nostalgic as well. see a theme progressing? Mid90s is a film about the struggles of a preteen boy growing up in an economically challenged area in the 90s. this film nails the true retro aspects of what makes the 90s great-- the colors, costumes, and script are good in immersing the audience. it's emotional yet calming, fun yet sad. watch this movie if you want to think about the world.

Displaced children have been forced to seek makeshift shelter in chicken coops after their tents succumbed to flooding. This tragic reality evokes painful echoes of history, reminiscent of the deplorable conditions endured by Jews during the Holocaust, confined to horse stalls and sleeping on wooden shelves never intended for humans.
The phrase “never again” lost its meaning shortly after World War II, as the world witnesses a disturbing repetition of past atrocities. Despite solemn vows, the world’s involvement in supplying arms only exacerbates the suffering of the oppressed. It serves as a stark reminder that complacency and inaction pave the way for history to repeat itself.
