Korrasami isn't perfect and it's not one of my favorites, but it will always be better than Kataang for me. They didn't have to dumb down or regress Korra or Asami's characters to make it work, their ending leaves a lot more room for growth and relationship development than Kataang does, and Asami wasn't presented as Korra's prize for being the hero. They both get to keep their autonomy.
It also doesn't feel one-sided. It feels like two women who are not only coming to terms with their sexuality, but also relatively new feelings for one another and exploring that together. I wish more people understood that
AGREED. Just because they’re both canon ships doesn’t mean they’re alike. I mean Korra had gone through some serious shit and had been held responsible for her actions way more than Aang ever was, so Korrasami was never going to have that “Perfect Avatar and Doting Girlfriend” dynamic. Unlike Aang, Korra was narratively not rewarded for liking someone and acting like she’s entitled to them just because she’s the Avatar. Unlike Aang, Korra actually undergoes an evolution in how she interacts with her love interest’s parental trauma and learns to be a better friend. Neither Korra nor Asami pushed for a relationship or tried to win the other over, even though they realized their feelings way before they got together. Like you said, it feels a lot more mutual. Imo, Korrasami was better written than Ka/taang even though it had way less development, because — probably due to 2010s Nick censorship — they couldn’t resort to will-they won’t-they romance tropes that send conflicting messages about what the characters want and what is good for them. Most of their romantic development had to be platonic in nature, and Bryke are much better at writing meaningful platonic relationships than romantic ones, so this worked out in Korrasami’s favour.
In some ways, Korrasami actually reminds me a little bit of Sukka. Like Suki, Asami is super competent, super gorgeous, and didn’t need to compromise herself for this relationship, though she did have to teach some lessons to her eventual partner. Asami was never set up as a deuteragonist (unlike Katara) and I don’t mind her narrative weight being tied to that of her love interest, especially since — as previously stated — much of that romantic development was platonic.

In all seriousness though---
Korra got a ton---and I mean a TON---of hate, for daring to be a headstrong, non-genderconforming woman of color. So forgive me if I don't react well to "korrasami doesn't deserve it"
Korra already fought through enough misogyny and racism while it was actively airing. She already got enough criticism for not being the "target audience" of 8-12 age males who buy action figures. She already got enough criticism for having flaws as a woman, for not "acting ladylike". She already got enough criticism for not being white or white passing in a show that has ZERO white characters. So when you come at korrasami fans with "they don't deserve it"? Don't be surprised when korrasami fans look at it with a lens of suspicion, because korrasami already fought through the criticism, already fought through being stuck in the "dead slot" air time in nickelodeon (which they were moved to in season three, when the show runners actively started hinting at a wlw ship), already fought through being pulled off air and onto online viewing only, in 2014, for those of you who are a bit young. (Obergefell vs Hodges, the Supreme Court case which legalized gay marriage nationwide in the US, happen on June 26, 2016). "They only held hands in the finale" because that's all they could get away with at the time. They were the FIRST. Bubbeline came later. Rupphire came later. Catradora came later. There are still no notable mlm ships in children's media, so the work ISN'T done. Korrasami fans "screech and yell" at you for not understanding because you accuse them of "queerbaiting" without understanding that they were the FIRST in their time to OPENLY hint at being gay on a a children's television network. In a time, for most intents and purposes in the US, being gay was still ILLEGAL.
And by the way? The Owl House, a recent, animatec children's show on Disney, was recently canceled for not being "the Disney brand". It features a bisexual woman of color (in an EXPLICITLY wlw relationship) as the main character, not unsimilar to Korra. Misogyny is not dead. Homophobia is not dead. Know your history, and know the work isn't done.

They look at themselves like forces of nature, as inevitable ends, but they’re not. Their depth is as false as the shoals at low tide. They twist the meaning of justice to absolve themselves of conscience.

"They were just there wherever I looked from the day I was born. Those miserable walls."
I think this is the most important line we need for understanding Eren. From the moment he was born Eren felt caged no matter what he did and he longed for release.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This desire was unconscious at first, but seeing Armin dream so passionately brought about the realization that Armin was seeing and believing in something that Eren couldn't, and this brings about the realization in him that he's restrained/caged from doing something.
Tumblr media
He initially believes that this indignation from a sense of being caged is because of the Titans or oppressors but as time goes on and the circumstances change, Eren realises that this is something internal and the fact that it's something that no one else experiences is one of the sources of his tragedy: he can't communicate/share this desire.
Tumblr media
(There's probably some symbolism in the fact that Eren confessed his truest desires to a child that didn't speak the same language)
At first, Eren associated release with the "sight" of the things in Armin's book. He believed that seeing those things will give him the release and liberty he's been longing for, though it should be noted that Eren says he doesn't care what the particular sights *are* just that he sees them so I think he cares much more about the feeling of liberation that those things stand for than the sights themselves.
Tumblr media
So I think that even though Eren might say that he's disappointed that the world wasn't what was in Armin's book I think what he's really sad about is that he didn't feel liberated by the world beyond the walls, but because he associated those feelings with the sights in Armin's book he uses them interchangeably(I think this is supported by the fact that Eren still feels caged and empty when actually seeing those sights in 139).
Tumblr media
The reason Eren slaughters humanity beyond the walls is because from his perspective, *they* are walls/barriers obstructing his freedom. "That Scenery" is one of the most important motifs with Eren, it's the liberty that comes with transcending or breaking a wall, but one of the ironies in 131 is that Eren is deluding himself to think that it's freedom. Eren's very nature demands that he cannot see beyond the "walls" and this is testified to by Eren looking unfulfilled immediately after the freedom panel and the fact that he still needs Armin's approval. Besides Isayama deliberately contrasts Eren and Armin by saying that Armin still believes in a world beyond the walls, with a panel of Eren's eyes closed.
Tumblr media
Eren's tragedy is that of a man born with the inability to look past the repression of life(or you could say he was born with the ability to see restraints everywhere). I think this solves all the contradictions I thought I saw in Eren's character and addresses the "Problem of being a Slave" that Isayama once brought up.
Before I go there's one last thing I have to say about the final chapter and this motif, Eren can't see the dream Armin enjoys and he can't see the future that lies ahead, but his love for his friend(s) let's him transcend that nature by putting his hopes in them at the end. He won't ever be able to see beyond the walls, that's just how he is, but he can be at peace with the fact that his friends will.
Tumblr media
Edit: I made this post mainly because I was tired of people rooting Eren's actions in trauma or an ideological mistake or lack of development. Eren has developed enough as a protagonist, especially by chapter 100, his "mistakes" in the Final Arc are a result of his nature, I think that's what Isayama wanted to convey.

This is purely headcanon, but it's my headcanon.
After the events of "We Will Be Reunited", the traveller goes back to Mondstadt, goes to the Knights' Headquarters and walks into Jean's office where Jean and Lisa are.
They look up and greets the traveller as they shut the door.
The moment that door shuts, the traveler breaks down in tears.
Both women are up and by their side in a flash.

I must confess that it’s incredibly upsetting and downright aggravating to me that Mikasa and Armin were just so blind to Eren’s clear sorrow and discomfort for so long. Either they didn’t notice at all or willingly looked the other way.
They’ve known him since they were 8 or 9 years-old and endured a lot of struggles together. For Eren’s childhood friends, of all people, to not see his pain or overlook it is just depressing.
However, I don’t think this is out of character for Armin and Mikasa because they’ve already exemplified this behavior towards Eren earlier, during two distinct times: the conclusion of the Uprising arc and the ocean scene. Both featured timeskips that involved drastic and visible changes in Eren’s personality. Those changes resulted from Eren learning an incredible amount of distressing information that destabilized his entire worldview.
Here’s what I mean, starting with chapter 70:

Overanalysing the Subtext of Amity Blight’s Hair 2: Electric Boogaloo
Lilith, Fanart, Self Perception and Luz
LILITH
Tumblr media
There are tons of parallels between Amity and Lilith (both star pupils and Grudgby captains with talented but troublemaking siblings, the Emporer’s Coven connection etc) but Wing it Like Witches revealed a physical one: Both changed their physical appearances – specifically their hair – to conform.
Tumblr media
There are theories that Lilith changed because she’s also cursed, but assuming she did it herself, going from untamed redhead to straight black dye-job is huge conformity signalling. And Amity’s dye parallels that. Unlike Lilith, though (as far as we know), Amity’s dye is also a form of self-expression.
In my last post I explained the three colour tones in Amity’s hair represent the three main influences on her life:
Turquoise under-layer = The Good Witch Azura
Green top = Blight Family
Brown roots = Willow/childhood innocence
FANART & LUMITY
(thanks to @iris-sanders-athena for this idea – they probably explain this better than me, check their blog out).
Supporting the idea that Turquoise = Azura, whenever Amity draws herself in fanart, she colours her hair solid turquoise.
Tumblr media
@iris-sanders-athena suggested Amity omitting her roots shows how Amity had let go of/believes she had lost that part of herself.
For me, Fanart Amity shows her free of real-world baggage. Azura is an escape from Amity’s tightly controlled life of expectation, and, like many of us, the version of herself she creates through fanart is free from responsibility (dark green) and regrets (brown roots). This version of Amity doesn’t need to worry about her parents or her career. Fanart Amity is free.
Which is why Luz bonding with Amity through Azura is so important, Because she’s connecting to that fantasy daydream version of her that Amity keeps locked away. Luz doesn’t have the context of Amity’s past mistakes (brown roots) or future expectations (dark green), which lets Luz push past them to the core of who Amity is, and who she wants to be.
Tumblr media
And Luz does so without judgement. (“Her crosshatching has improved.”) Luz joins in. No wonder Amity fell for her so fast, because Luz sees the best version of her and helps Amity actualise that heroic, dorky version of herself. Her first witch’s duel, defeating a monster from a literal children’s fairytale, saving the Twins, helping Willow, choosing happiness over status in Wing it Like Witches.
In the same way the Boiling Isles lets Luz fulfil her witchy fantasies, Luz is helping Amity do the same on a smaller, more human scale.

Why The Owl House is Quickly Becoming One of my Favorite Shows and Why Amity is a Great Character
(Wrote this for my site, but figured it would be good to read here fellow Lumity stans)
Tumblr media
Back in the beginning of 2020, I had made a short post on Tumblr talking about how I think Gravity Falls was the best animated series to premiere and end in the 2010s. Alex Hirsch and his team created one of my favorite stories with wonderful themes and one of the greatest mysteries presented in an animated medium. So when I initially found out several years ago that Dana Terrace, Alex’s partner and someone who was probably most well known for her work on the DuckTales reboot, I was very excited.
Of course, time passed and I wondered when the show would finally drop. Luckily, it came right at the best time. Several big and well loved animated series, like SPOP or SU, were beginning to end. And The Owl House broke into my heart as quickly as Gravity Falls did.
