9 days away from the premiere of Chapter 3!
Fun fact: the 2nd "clear the room for a DM/PC one-on-one scene" occurs in this upcoming episode!
The first was Eursulon's conversation with The Pilgrim Under Stars in the finale of Chapter 2!

If Tumblr really put its heads together we could make an actual Goncharov film and have it only ever play as the in-flight movie on a single transatlantic red-eye flight, with the sound too quiet and lighting too dark to make sense of so the passengers are left curious with the only evidence of its existence being their sleepy memory and a website gleefully celebrating the non-existence of the movie, like a 21st century Polybius.

So my friend @charminglyantiquated shared a story-game with me that she's working on for @elsewhereuniversity and I became kiiinnnddadaa obsessed so for Christmas I had to make a little surprise for her about for the next letter I sent her.
Without giving spoilers, the narrative features an origami swan with writing on the back, and a special ring and I was like "I CAN DO SOMETHING WITH THAT".
So I did. Pls enjoy my beautiful origami that's hiding SECRETS.
[Image Description 1: A photo of an origami swan. The swan is made of fancy paper with gold detailing, but hiding in the underside of the wing can be seen some handwriting Image Description 2: On the backside of the unfolded swan is a number of quickly scratched notes in different handwritings and annotations in black ink as well as a drawing of a simple ring. There's also faded writing in blue ink that can't be read. One note points to the faded ink and reads "Looks like there might be something up here?" Pointing at the ring is a back and forth between different handwritings "Why a ring?", "Who's is it?", "no idea", "do we need to know?". The last writting at the bottom of the paper is in all caps and reads "These secrets are by season sealed, Only by winter's bite revealed." and had written comments point it it reading "riddle from Canyon, no idea where they got it" and "this is important??" End Description.]
Riddle solution and revealed text and under the cut

The blue writing was written with a temperature-sensitive ink, which was revealed by making it cold - in this case, she stuck it in the freezer, which is exactly what I did when I tested the ink on the paper. The poem is about the central problem of the narrative :)
[Image ID 3: Another look at the back of the paper, now with small, neat cursive writing revealed in blue ink. A poem has been revealed written above and around the ring, and mysterious symbols written on the inside of the ring. The poem reads: "In time of love and trust betrayed, The Queen in birch and sleep had laid. For ruling Knight had little known, that grudges left unchecked had grown. A worthy soul the crows had found, To bring Spring Queen back to her crown. Now revels sing of Queen’s old songs, the friend of crows you find is gone. Replaced by neighbor, form eschewed, Their fate, you find, is up to you. Choose well, dear friend, which path you take, Soon all will know the story you make." End Description.]

I do genuinely believe that the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (and arguably the Zelda franchise as a whole, though i myself have played literally none of these games) is closer to fitting the description of ‘Tolkien-esque Fantasy’ than most other movies/shows/games/books etc that claim that label
Like, compare this post by tumblr user wufflesvetinari, which makes an important point about Tolkien’s worldbuilding, and also lives in my head rent free:

and then these quotes from Jacob Geller’s “Every Zelda is the Darkest Zelda”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and his conclusions about the messages in Zelda games are thematically very similar to the through-lines about friendship and love in LOTR, and what a lot of authors miss about what makes a fantasy story personal and memorable:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“A world without joy and humor isn’t a compelling world to fight for” is exactly why there are so many pieces of fantasy media out there that just feel like carbon copies of each other (i’ve seen many posts that explain this better than I can though I can’t find any specific ones at the moment, just know that I didn’t invent this thesis). You’ve got the cool swords, you’ve got the wizards and the spells and the battles, but first and foremost you need the LOVE.

Suvi, a child of the Citadel and a soldier, made the right call. Her feelings were legitimate. Her worldview and upbringing dictates the split second calls she makes. Love and friendship in conflict with loyalty and duty, and she defaults to her training.
Ame, a witch and a wild one (not in the Honored Friend sense but just a wild person), made the right call. Her life was in danger, and these people part of the cage closing around her. An animal backed into the corner. Far too much of her still matching the fox to be tame and graceful in a world of artifice
Eursulon, a protector and an Honored Friend, made the right call. One friend in danger, hunted, with so few she can trust. The other in ostensibly the safest place in the world for her. But a place he could not stay, a trap for himself too. To go. And to protect.
All three made arguably bad choices. All three made arguably the right choice. And all three definitely made choices 100% in character.
I love the complications in this story and the characters and Brennan playing them into their own little traps
