"They were the villains out in the world. The world of the humans. All they needed was something...more. They needed something to believe in. To fight for. To die for. To be resurrected for. All they needed was Krakoa", Charles Xavier.

I'm so sorry, but I'm not ready to give up on the age of Krakoa.

Ever wonder how your work would look like in a more upscale setting? Presented as premium works or accents that exude luxury? I did.
So I tried some art staging. And I learned some things along the way. I always thought I was a minimalist, but when scoping out upscale interior environments I found out quickly my work looks best in lived in, eclectic spaces that effectively used objects to sell a aspirational lifestyle. Which is ironic to say the least, considering my personal ideology and aesthetics.
So for the record, before doing it the hard way I peeped several apps that you could use to stage your work in various home decor spaces. I opted not do that do due to the bait and switch tactics of the apps. They bait you with great photos of spaces, but the switch comes when you find out the "free" side of the apps only have the most basic of set ups. That beautiful living room that they lured you with in the first place? There's a monthly subscription fee for that.
Look, everyone's' personal financial situation is different, but me personally? I'm not trying to hear that.
So we're doing it the hard way. I scour Instagram for modern living spaces that speak to me and I get to work. And with Clip Studio Paint I go all in, adding frames and mattes, shadows, and in some cases adding reflections and adjusting light sources. Admittedly, it can take a little bit of time, but I find the process weirdly cathartic and relaxing.
Doing it the hard way actually turned out to be a good thing. You see, I credit and tag the original interior designers and photographers. And whenever I can, I use Black and People of Color interior designers as inspiration. It's been a great way to break the ice, and every interior designer has loved what I've done with my art remixed in their spaces. Who knows? Future art staging collabs with designers I love and respect? Win win baby!
Anyhoo, here's a few of my favorite art staging works! Enjoy

Kidd Alpha Episode no.2 Am I actually telling a story within a series of T-shirt designs? Sure why not? The 2nd entry's copy goes like this... Having escaped from the Metaverse and unto the streets of Neo City Kigali, Kidd Alpha is desperate to surivive. To do so means finding and ditching his location tracker. His pursuers the Retrievers can’t be far behind… Alpha being in the real world presents new challenges. He’s never known hunger before. He’s never been homeless. But Kidd Alpha is resourceful. And he has a plan. I love fashion. I love typography. I love graphic design. I love Afrofuturism. Why not put all that love into a T-shirt design?

Afro-Mech Mask series no.3 The Afro-Mech Mask series both celebrates the beauty and significance of Ancient African masks and embraces Afrofuturism. This work is a testament, that no matter where you are within the diaspora you can persevere, prosper and thrive. Yes, I went HARD on the Jack Kirby influence.

This is definitely a love letter to James Jean no doubt. Petal and cabbage motifs are on full display, along with his distinct color palettes. But there's hints of Gundam, Halo, and a obvious shout out to Takashi Murakami as well. Shirt is for sale!

Pop! Mecka Trash no.11 Influences: @5uperfreak , Mazinger Z, mechanical robot hands, graphitti and futuristic sneakers, with just a hint of @hebrubrantley . Interior Design: @home_ec_op @melissasf2 @kimdaunis What is Pop! Mecka Trash? A reflection and critique of sorts. Some of the most successful living contemporary pop artists of the 21st century focus on cartoon imagery. Artists like Kaws, Matt Gondek, Takashi Murakami, and Steven Harrington. Many of these artists subscribe to an appropriation aesthetic. Which simply means to take something in existing pop culture and re-purpose it in a new and sometimes deconstructionist way. Pop! Mecka Trash re-appropriates the appropriated. And does so through the lens of things I already love: Mecha [Japanese giant robot genre] and sneaker culture. Thus the PoP! Mecka Trash collection was born, both as a T-shirt line and as limited prints. For T-shirts, check out my bio linktree.

The New Draconians
The Process
Originally conceived in 2015-2017.  On the surface it’s an Afrofuturistic cyberpunk story that speaks to late stage capitalism, and the long hard road from Dystopia to Utopia. But scratch under the surface, and it’s a condemnation of Western Imperialism throughout the diaspora, directed at Africa and beyond. It’s now the 22nd century, and against the backdrop of the climate crisis the tables have turned.

Hebru Brantley and Osamu Tezuka's inspired mashup of FLYBOY+ASTROBOY is the ninth piece in my Pop! Mecha Trash series. An re-imagining of Pop and Contemporary artists' IP through the lens of Robot Mecha and Sneaker culture iconography.
