Often writers will have general motifs for their character - whether one embodies the sun, moon, snow, etc. What would you say is your character(s) motif and why? Did they have a motif when you made them that shifted into something else?
Tumblr media
I think of all my characters, Alun is the one that gained and lost a lot in this sense across her character growth. At first, she was heavily associated with red, fire, the sea, and sparrows. These motifs kept going while somewhat having extra things added to them as relationships grew, such as flowers, chains, and the sun.
Currently, it gave into the fire, red, and both the sun and moon while their meanings also shifted slightly.
Most are played in positive and negative aspects of her, the fire for example is in a both literal and metaphorical sense; the scarring she was given on her wrists, that spark of desire and curiosity that had her gather up the courage to leave her home which turned into a chain of events all born of courage and boldness that led to the eventual loss and actual fire that destroyed the new home she had found. How such events keep following her yet she refuses to go out and keeps pushing on or still burning.
The color red is related to it while drawing back to the lunar eclipse during her birth, it is also related to blood and her path - things she wanted to leave behind and that showed itself in her life, in her birth name, and in 'her'.
I think fire is the strongest motif when it comes to Alun as it speaks of many aspects of her character throughout everything, and who she is right now. The color red is also associated with it in a way, it plays in similar themes but it is more negative, it speaks of the presage of her tribe and the day she was born, how she thinks she could have left it behind but 'red is always following her'.
The sun and moon too dip a bit into red but it is in a more religious sense, Alun is not a religious character nor relies on faith to keep going, but she feels bound by the gods' will, specifically Nhaama.
"And Nhaama. A name she had not uttered once since she left if not to speak of the goddess’ curses and mockery."
She blames all the misfortune that fell upon her on the gods and has a particular distaste for the moon as if it is the very entity or form of all her grief. In return, she takes the sun with envy as a blinding light, of everything she can't have or will never be able to step into.
"These chains ye speak of are one of the soul, one I know ye wouldn't understand in all ye knowledge. I would put down Nhaama herself if I could, an' for all I care, she's jes' as chained to me as I am to her."

Tagged by: @oneiroy Thank you for the tag!! Tagging: @the-sycophant @machinasphere @spiral-cut (Feel free to ignore it if you have done this one already. fmdsjkgn)
What instrumental track would play in the background of your character's story during their most meaningful moments?
I’m gonna be cheeky and go with two because I actually have a song commissioned for Alun for this exact purpose. gfgnm BUT, if I had to pick something else, I think I’d go with Le Château Abandonné by Guilhem Desq! I know they are quite different from each other, but we don’t question the voices in my head. It simply works,,,
