It’s the same Update I’ve been giving for a long time - I’m continuing to work on it, I continuously get longer and longer - I mean, I was working on it the day i flew back here, 3 or 4 days, but i was, i was rereading some chapters I wrote earlier, and I didnt like them well enough, and uh, so I kinda ripped them apart and rewrote them, and I had some ideas before I went on this trip, I gotta get back and I hope I’ll get to it while the ideas are still fresh in my head… Um, it’s a big big book, I’ve said that before, it’s a challenging book…

 It’s probably gonna be a larger book than any of the previous volumes of the series, […] I think this one is gonna be longer than [1500 manuscript pages] by the time I finish it, and I think I’m about ¾ of the way done.

Ok my first reaction was I didn’t like how the dragons disobeyed their riders like that, but after thinking about it I think it’s kinda brilliant when it comes to the behaviors of dragons.

First, both Arrax and Luke were really young and had absolutely zero combat experience. As soon as they saw Vhagar, it’s very obvious they simultaneously became a lot more tense. Then after Luke had his encounter with Aemond and left you can see Arrax looking in the direction of where Vhagar was in clear distress and Luke does the same thing before mounting. Luke realized their anxiety was high and he did his best to calm Arrax down before taking flight, but that all went out the window as soon as Vhagar gave chase. Now you have a child and a very young and small dragon that are bonded together in a very scary situation: being chased down by a behemoth in the middle of a raging storm (poor Arrax was flapping his wings as hard as he could) I personally think Arrax went on the offense to try and protect both himself and Luke, if only to give them a chance to escape. Both of them did the best they could.

Then you have Vhagar, an extremely old, massive, experienced dragon that is bonded to an inexperienced rider who is feeling a lot of unhinged rage and resentment. They were flying in attack maneuvers ffs I doubt she thought it was a game. And then this little dragon has the audacity to breathe fire in her face. Of course she’s not going to deal with that shit, as utterly tragic as her response is.

At the end of the day, dragons are not mindless war machines that will obey every command. They’re very powerful animals. No matter how trained or bonded with their owners they are, very powerful animals can and will do what they want.

“You’re absolutely insane, do you know that?” Dany playfully scolded him as she looked around the living room, grinning like an idiot at the ridiculous amount of flowers that filled her flat. “Couldn’t you just send a bouquet like a normal bloke?”

Jon chuckled. “You should know by now I’m not a normal bloke, Princess.”

“You didn’t have to do all this.”

He hummed in disagreement. “And risk our fans thinking that I’m a shite boyfriend for not showing up at your show? Even though I can’t make it tonight, at least everyone will know how much I wish that I could be there.”

Oh. Right. The flowers weren’t actually for her. Dany tried to push down the prick of disappointment she felt at the reminder, embarrassed for her earlier excitement. “You realise you’ve just made the lives of all men on Planetos insanely difficult?” she said instead. “You’re setting a very high bar, Mr. Snow.”

“Good. I’d love to see any of them try to keep up.” Dany could hear his smug smirk in his voice.

“So,” she cleared her throat, moving closer to one of the arrangements to play with a rose. “You’re really not coming tonight.”

“It doesn't seem like it.”

“Of course. I completely understand.” Truth was, part of her had hoped that between Sunday and now, his schedule would have cleared, and he would be able to attend her silly show.

Jon sighed on the other end. “I know you're very eager for the real Jon Snow kiss. But don’t worry, Princess. I'll make it worth the wait.”
