Fantasy Friday! I haven't read a fantasy book since I finished the Red Queen series! I've been all about the romance 😬 I have some on my tbr (included in this photo) and want to get back into the fantasy world! 📖 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 📖 Dearly by @therealmargaretatwood Rating: 4/5 stars Goodreads: 3.76 ⭐ I really enjoyed this collection of Margaret Atwood's poetry. I have previously read her book The Handmaid's Tale but this was my first time reading her poetry and I really love her work and it really inspired me while I wrote my dissertation (a poetry collection). Each section had a different theme that Atwood focused on. Her feminist poems and environment poetry were my favourite pieces because they spoke to me the most and are so relevant. 🌼 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐮𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 🌼 I've had the last 6 days 😏 off work (go back tomorrow) so that I could focus on my dissertation! I can't believe I've handed the first 80% in 😳 my degree is almost over! (I'm so ready for it 🎉). ✊ BOOK REVIEW ✊ Mad About You by @mhairimcf Rating: 5/5 stars Goodreads: 4.20 ⭐ Firstly, I'd like to thank @tandemcollectiveuk and @harpercollinsuk for the gifted copy of Mad About You for an honest review. I've read a couple of Mhairi McFarlane's books before and was so excited when I heard about this one! I was really trying to get my hands on it and then Tandem Collective UK came through for me and of course I loved it as much as I knew I would. You might be expecting a cute fluffy rom-com from this book but is far from it. Of course there is a romance element but I would say that is a secondary part of this book. This book explores the effect of emotional and mental abuse up close so be aware of this when about to read this book. What I really loved about this book is the female empowerment that it explored and women supporting women! We love to see it! I loved how supportive Cal was of Harriet and always knew exactly what to say in such a genuine and kind way. He didn't take over the 'show' but let her do her thing and was always there after when she needed someone. It was great to see a respectful relationship blossom. Mhairi McFarlane's books always have such depth and its why I love her works so much because of how well she explores these difficult subjects in such excellent books! If you're looking for a rom-com that has depth and explores very relevant topics then this book and all Mhairi McFarlane books are for you! 👩‍🎓 Book Review: 👨‍🎓 Get Even by @jadechurchauthor Rating: 4/5 stars Goodreads: 4.21 ⭐ Firstly, I'd like to thank Jade Church for sending me an eARC as part of her ARC team for an honest review! 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲: 𝟮𝟵𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮 What a read! I really enjoyed this very spicy college romance that follows Jamie's POV throughout. Jamie is a history student in her last year of her degree when she discovers her boyfriend is sleeping with her best friend. Of course revenge is the only option (a girl after my own heart). Jamie is completely badass and I really love her character and how bold she is. This book also has the fake dating trope that I absolutely adore! She enters a fake relationship with Ryan to somehow get back into the University's good books. The spicy scene are on full heat in this book but they don't overpower the book at all. I really appreciated all the representation that was covered in this book, one example being the MC was bisexual! It really didn't take me long to read because it was addictive and I wanted to see what happened! I enjoyed all the different side characters. Church definitely knows how to create interesting characters! The only thing that I wasn't sure about was how quickly and easily Jamie's problems went away at the end of the book. It felt a little too easy and neat for me. ❤ BOOK REVIEW: 💚 Sasha Knight by @sgodfreyauthor Rating: 4/5 stars Firstly, I would like to thank Own It London for reaching out and gifting me a ARC for an honest review. This book focuses on a boy/man called Matthew Archer that we follow through childhood right into adulthood. The setting switches between Jamaica and the United States. I found it such an educational experience reading about this authors take on Jamaican society in the late 70/80s with all its similarities and differences to other cultures including my own. I found it interesting to learn about the discrimination in small communities surrounding religion and class and of course gender. The main focus of this book is Matthew's friendship with Sasha Knight as a child before she went missing and how this has haunted him throughout his life. As the reader we go on a journey with Matthew trying to figure out what happened to his best friend which had such a huge impact on him. I really enjoyed reading this book and found it was such a quick read that I always wanted to get back to! This book touches on so many important topics: Homophobia, racism, gender inequality, sexual assault, to name a few. Matthew is a real and raw character that isn't perfect in the slightest. The author explores how toxic masculinity has shaped so many of the characters including the MC Matthew. I find it so refreshing for a male author to write about such important topics that effect men from the very beginning of their lives. The only reason this wasn't a five star review for me was I didn't find the section of the book nearer the end where we focus on Matthew's adulthood as engaging as the rest of the book. I can see why it was done and how it added to the overall story but it just wasn't a section I favoured. This book is due to release in Spring 2022! ✒ Indie/Small Press Poetry! 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙋𝙤𝙚𝙩𝙧𝙮 𝙈𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙝 ✒ Recently I posted about 3 of my top poetry authors from larger, traditionally published poets (check out that post on my page). So, of course I had to showcase some Indie/Small Press poets that I really love! We have @mssakshinarula who actually has published 4 poetry collections that are all amazing in their own way! In my post I've chosen Lover, which is book 1 of The Art of Staying Lost duology that I really recommend 😍 Then we have @bysampayne who is a LGBTQ+ poet that has 2 poetry collections under his belt. This Boy Is A Rainbow is definitely my favourite of the two! Last but definitely not least, we have the amazing @amindfulwriter who inspires me weekly with all she does! I Got to Know Nature is here 2nd book that she published with her Small Press @ourgalaxypublishing and I adored this collection. Once I finish my current read (Sasha Knight by @sgodfreyauthor) then I'm jumping back on the Romance train! 🎧 B O O K R E V I E W : 🎧 The Castaways by @lucyclarke_author Rating: 5/5 stars Goodreads: 4.02 ⭐ I borrowed this book from Libby (the library app) as my monthly audiobook and I'm so glad that I did. After a few thrillers/murder mystery books that didn't really meet my expectations I really needed something from this genre to remind me why I love it! This book definitely did that! I always love a book that focuses on a relationship between sisters! Lori and Erin were both great characters and we got their dual POV in this book. Both characters where relatable and you could actually sympathies with each of them (something I haven't found in other thrillers I've read recently). The premise of this book was really good. I liked that we had the 'then' and 'now' chapters that always kept us trying to guess. At different points in the book I wanted to get to each of the POV chapters just to see what had happened in the past/present. By the last section of the book I couldn't stop listening. Every opportunity I was listening to the audiobook wanting to know what happens! I never thought I could feel so many emotions while reading a thriller. At one point Clarke almost broke my heart! I really liked the ending and how it wasn't the perfect ending that readers would imagine but kind of in-between what I wanted to happen and what I didn't want to happen.
