In an AU where Merlin’s magic has been revealed, and all that that comes with, Arthur is talking to either him or Gaius about all that was hidden for him, and the name Emrys comes up.

And Arthur, the literal highest ranking noble there is, has obviously been tutored in all sorts of languages and all kinds of old texts. He knows what it means. He knows that Emrys means immortal. He’s the first person to really realise and consider what that means for Merlin. And he has no idea how to approach it. Does Merlin know?

How do you approach the idea that you will leave someone you care for behind, for all eternity?

How do you tell someone you love them, that you will always love them, when their “always” is so much longer than yours?

How do you hug someone knowing that you can’t hold them forever?

How do you kiss someone, allow yourselves both to love so hard, when you know that there’s only two ways that can end? Either they forget you as the years pass, and you become void to them against a background of emptiness… or you know that you might haunt them forever, that they might move on, but they’ll remember the years long after you’ve left them…

How do you get used to telling someone goodbye in your head every time you part, because every day could be your last, but it won’t be theirs, and no matter what follows after death, your goodbye really will be eternal?

How do you love when you know you’ll be apart far longer than you could ever be together?

How do you love when there is never the possibility of a happy ending? Not even for a moment. Not for all the happy beginnings or happy middles life might give.

Do you risk it? Knowing that you might be one of many? Knowing there’s no true love to give you a lifetime of each other? Or do you let them go before you even start, and hope maybe to spare you both that hurt…?

I've said before I firmly believe Merlin is great with kids and Arthur is.... not. He wants to be he really does, but he just doesn't really get them. And maybe this comes from a number of things, the main one being their upbringing...

Hunith wasn't an especially open or communicative mother, she wasn't perfect, but that's another post, but she cared. She loved Merlin, she made him feel safe and happy and loved. Merlin's childhood was likely far from ideal, but she showed him love and care. And Uther... sucked. Did he love Arthur? Well, yes. But Arthur genuinely didn't know that. In fact when Uther tells him he loves him ("more than this entire kingdom and certainly more than my own life"), Arthur responds with "I always thought I was a big disappointment to you."

He didn't know he was loved. And propriety held him back from any care or affection he might ever have received. His childhood was severely lacking and given a child he just wouldn't know what to do with it.

But at the same time he cares deeply for others and would want to do the best possibly thing, while having no emotional intelligence or concept of childhood. Picture like, Merlin walking in on Arthur telling a "bedtime story" to an eight year old and having to quickly wrap up and change subject before Arthur gets to the bit in that particular memory where everyone was brutally murdered. Or Arthur sitting and wondering "Hmm.... what engaging conversation can I have with this toddler?" and landing on "swords". But he would love any child in his care with the whole of his idiot heart no question about it.

Any conversation about kids... Arthur would bring it up. Family is such an important thing to him. Having people to care for.

Plus I don't think he'd appreciate how difficult kids can be...... Despite everyone else pointing out that HE was a NIGHTMARE to look after, and if any kid was like him there's no way he could handle them.

In terms of Merlin, I think he'd somewhat just understand children well. But perhaps not royalty, and if this is a child in Arthur's care I can perhaps see problems here... Formal events would inevitably end up as "Arthur you can't put a kid in that, it's way too heavy!" "It's a formal event I can't dress them in rags!" "How's he supposed to run around??" "He's not."

Oh and also, I think kids would tune into Merlin's magic somewhat. Because he is magic itself after all. Canons a bit of a mess in how magic and magical ability works, but I think in children, there's a more natural pull towards it — without the fear that grew towards the idea of sorcery as they grew up — and also just because kids are kids and they're curious and young and interested. So they'd maybe feel safer around him, or just know that he was safety, that he'd protect them, without really knowing why.

I would also like everyone to imagine Merlin doing magic to calm kids down, or using it to animate stories as he tells them. And maybe Arthur being secretly just as fascinated by it.

Hey, just wanna let y'all know that I start college today (on the bus now). I'm doing 4 A-Level courses and likely to be very busy, and maybe not as much time for thinking of other things. So I probably won't post as much on this blog, probably won't do much writing, or reply to stuff as much.

Either way I wanna say that I love everyone I interact with on here. I started this blog a couple months ago for something to do in lockdown, and I've been met with so many creative and brilliant and lovely people, and people I now consider friends, even really close friends who I'm so grateful for.

So yeah, love you all. I'll try not to disappear completely.

I was thinking about that ep where merlin pretends to be a knight as bait and initially I was thinking ‘damn that’s really unlike Arthur to offer merlin up as bait, especially so late in the show’ but then I was like let’s be real. Come on. Merlin was absolutely dying to do that. I can just see him bouncing on the balls of his feet, eyes shining, begging Arthur to let him do it because he never gets to have any fun and if Arthur doesn’t let him he’ll will wash everything he has in extra starch for a month. And Arthur tries to argue but Merlin so rarely asks for anything that he feels he has to, so he heaves a long-suffering sigh and says yes. And then for the second time in his life he helps merlin into armour that’s way too big for him and ties his own cloak around Merlin’s shoulders. Arthur has to remind him that this isn’t a joke, there’s a chance he could get hurt, and merlin rolls his eyes and nudges Arthur, who manages a tight smile and has to resist the urge to forcibly drag merlin back and order him not to go out there. In the end he’s fine, but Arthur immediately makes a silent vow to himself that it will never, ever happen again.

oh no I'm terrible at this but I'm gonna sit here and try and think them out until I can think of 5

1) Uh I'll start with the one physical attribute of myself that I like, bc it's the least important, and that's that I think my eyes are kinda pretty

2) I like that I've become quite creative despite being seen as more academic. I write stories and poems and I make art, and it might not always be good, but I'm making stuff and I think thats pretty neat.

3) I'm learning to actually like my singing voice. I'm not amazing, but I've stopped seeing myself as bad, and singing and theatre is something I enjoy, so I like it.

4) I try and see beauty everywhere, and I like that I guess. I've gotta spend my whole life with my own thoughts so they may as well be paying attention to beautiful and kind things and generally being optimistic, it's nicer that way than what they've been in the past. So I'm gonna romanticise the shit out of everything, forever, because that makes me happy. And I guess I like that I've taught myself to do that and be happy with life more often than not, if that makes sense?

5) I like that I'm able to get on easily with most people. I'm not overly social, but I think people mostly consider me a kind and friendly person, and I can get on well with strangers when I end up speaking to them. Which I like, because I think the world is overwhelmingly full of amazing people and being known as kind is probably the greatest thing I personally would want to achieve.

That's 5, some of which I've never really considered before and I'm really not sure if that's the sort of thing people normally think about themselves but hey. I'll take the positivity.

Not sure who I'm gonna send this to yet, probably just whoever's inboxes I end up finding first, because y'all deserve a lot of positivity and time to think about how amazing you are, and I love you all so you'd better start loving yourselves as best you can too!!
