Ruins are celestial bodies. Their vividness stems from a total material autonomy; prescribed form: reduced, rearranged, and reconditioned by an accumulation of ether. Dust and debris from across the earth and heavens descend upon the ruin: coating the uneven body, rendering it supernatural, super real.
The ruin is free from the consumptive grip of intact, coherent. They need not provide an entryway or a view; there is nothing to be communicated or performed. In this way, ruins are like murmurs: unintelligible though they maintain traces of meaning to come, meaning lost.
When one encounters a ruin, they may find themselves mentally sketching how they believe the crumbling architecture once looked. This mental sketch up will, of course, vary from person to person, similar to when individuals pick out different words amidst inarticulate garble. It is human nature to fill in gaps…thus the discomfort of ruin.
Ruins are not burdened by loss, they revel in it. To be deemed a “ruin” is to exist in a continuous state of protected entropy. At any given moment, a ruin will never be the same again, though it may take generations to notice. This is because humans do not possess the sensitivity or attention to perceive interminable happenings.
Ruins are like stars: sites of indefinite interpretation constituted by dust.
