I’ve seen your kiss scene and fight scene vocab posts and was wondering if you could do one about some things characters may do when they are nervous, or there is awkward tension — not necessarily romantic but just awkward.

**Using the word ‘said’ is absolutely not a bad choice, and in fact, you will want to use it for at least 40% of all your dialogue tags. Using other words can be great, especially for description and showing emotion, but used in excess can take away or distract from the story.

Yuuri Katsuki - The Epitome of ‘Unreliable Narrator’

I’m doing a rewatch of Yuri on Ice, and now that my knowledge of skating has increased substantially, the way I’m watching Yuri on Ice has changed completely.

For Yuuri to receive a score of 106 in his short programme is absolutely mental. Before I knew about skating I thought a score of above 100 was ‘good’ and anything below was ‘average’. It’s not. For reference:

Skate America this year - Vincent Zhou, who placed first in the short programme scored an overall score of 97, which is astoundingly high in itself. Shoma Uno, renowned for his high PCS scored 44.78, where Yuuri scored 47. 

The world record for the SP is 111.82 by Yuzuru Hanyu. This is followed by Nathan Chen who scored 110.38. Shoma Uno has the 3rd highest SP score (104.15). What’s interesting to note is that all these records were set POST 2018…meaning Yuuri would’ve surpassed the then world record by a good 10 points.

In fact, Yuuri’s base score is probably HIGHER as all his jumps were in the second half of the programme, unlike Hanyu’s (because jumping on tired legs is harder)

I think we as the audience are so swayed by Yuuri’s negative portrayal of himself that we fail to realise just how much of an amazing skater he is (hello, unreliable narrator alert). Katsuki Yuuri is LITERALLY the best of the best, and the more I watch this series the more I realise just how talented our boy is

Okay I gotta go off cuz I’ve been thinking about this a lot since watching some YoI last night, but I think Victor was planning on retiring after the season that he ended up coaching Yuuri in. Once he decided to coach Yuuri, he’d basically decided to retire earlier than originally planned, but he’d planned it nonetheless.

My thoughts on this started when I really looked at Victor’s face in the first episode. During that short bit where it shows the post competition interview he does not look happy for having won his 5th consecutive title, and when an interviewer askes Victor what his plans are for next season, he has a contemplative look, but he also looks very sad and there’s something about his face that just says “Do I tell them?”.

It’s at this point where he’s heavily thinking about retiring, but hasn’t told anyone yet. I don’t think he tells anyone because he fears the backlash, people telling him he can’t retire because he’s still on the top. He’s heard the rumors of him retiring, and he knows what people think about it.

This brings me to my second point. In the second episode, when the two Yuri’s walk in on Victor skating Eros, and Yurio comments that it was a program Victor was making for next season. He says that Victor was frustrated with it and that he was losing inspiration. From the outside it may look like that, and it may hold some bit of truth, but I think Victor was having problems cuz the programs were supposed to be for his last season. He wanted to go out with a bang, the ultimate final surprise before retiring. He wanted to go out on his own terms, and not by what others said he should do.

This is why Yuuri retiring, supposedly for Victor’s sake, upsets him so much. Victor had already planned and accepted retirement. He was ready to move on.

Also, when Yuuri breaks his record in the Free Skate, I believe Victor actually feared that Yuuri had actually won the gold. Because if Yuuri won, then that would mean he’d retire. Victor then panics, and in that moment, decides to go back to competing. Because if he keeps skating, maybe he can keep Yuuri by his side.

And this is why he looks so sad when he tells Yuuri he’s going to return to skating, he’d do anything to keep Yuuri on the ice, even at the expense of his own peaceful retirement.

TL;DR - Victor Nikiforov is tired and depressed, and planned on retiring the entire time. Yuuri gave him life and love, and just overall purpose in his life again. Him going back to skating is him being unwilling to let go of Yuuri, and wanting to do anything to make sure Yuuri doesn’t give up skating himself, because he knows Yuuri can do amazing things in the future of his career.

“if this is another metaphor for the competitions i should have won,” yuuri starts, and oh, how viktor wants to correct him, how he wants to tell him that those comments were meant as compliment instead of an expression of disappointment. but yuuri knows this, and viktor knows yuuri knows this, so he lets it rest instead of arguing.

“yuuri, no,” viktor shifts his weight to let yuuri sit up and prop his head on viktor’s shoulder. from this position, he can hear yuuri’s stuttering breath. each inhale sounds hesitant. “before i met you, i saw the world through an opaque lens. it’s like my heart has been residing in a glasshouse with blurry windows, and i thought whatever light managed to filter through was the highest amount of happiness a person could have.

“and then you came, and suddenly everything was so bright and warm. it was a pleasant surprise,” viktor cups yuuri’s face in his hands. “my sunshine. my star. you’re the centre of my universe,”

yuuri blushes at that, but finds enough composure to ask, quietly, “what happened to the glasshouse?”

“you love me, and the glass shattered,” viktor presses a soft kiss to his nose. “then, i understand how it’s like to finally live,”

“does that mean i’m good enough for you?” asks yuuri, a question he knows the answer to, a question viktor knows he knows the answer to. still, viktor answers it anyway.

“you’re more than anything i ever dared to hope for,”
