Captains Log, stardate Jun 18th 2020 Earth time
Hello, all!
Since last I wrote, I’ve managed to implement and build a few systems for Ao in the Dark.
It took quite a lot of trial and error, rebuilding, and scrapping, and starting all over again regarding just about everything, including getting the character animated and moving, installing a dialogue framework, and most recently, creating a simple inventory system!
Tumblr media
As primarily an artist, getting familiar with Unity in general has been quite the journey.  I’ve spent the last month working through a dozen or so tutorials and this has lead to what is probably a very basic understanding of the fundamentals: learning what game objects are, how to add components, basic animation, how to make use of imported tools and packages, as well as how to script in C#--the biggest struggle by far.  However, I feel just a bit more accomplished and less anxious now tackling objectives than I did before and it’s encouraged me to keep going.
Community, reaching out to fellow developers, chats with friends, and family have been incredible support since starting this journey. There are many in the dev/programming community willing to help and share their knowledge--can’t forget to mention the many helpful tools and resources for gamedev. I’m so grateful for this!
My updated To-Do List is as follows:
getting dialogue system to work with objects, inventory, and key items
complete a full interaction/event sequence(not entirely sure what I mean by this... perhaps something like completing a puzzle, obtaining a key item, and using that key item to move on in some way)
further writing of narrative: Chapter 1, and 2, and goals for overall narrative
determining the style and feel of Ao in the Dark, character design, and environment concepts for Chapter 1, and Chapter 2
completing main character’s sprite for idle and walking
initial illustration ideas
blog post on what type of game Ao in The Dark aims to be
I think having the more technical aspects of the project figured out will allow me to relax and be more at ease to focus on the art, and getting back to a place where I’m comfortable sharing work. If you’ve gotten this far, thanks so much for reading! ❤️

What are we working with?
Hello!  Hope everyone is safe, and doing well during these strange times.
I wanted to have a place to log progress on this project so I chose Tumblr and here we are!  The hope is that I’ll update here on any progress I make, connect with other indies and the community as a whole, and have a space where those interested in the game can come and find out information on Ao in the Dark. : )
Tumblr media
Right now, Ao in the Dark is in it’s very early stages.  I brought the art from a previous project so there’s the risk that it might be recognized but the art itself is mine and I’m repurposing it for this project exclusively.  I’m very proud of the work and I am excited it has new purpose!
I’m still working on the narrative script for Ao in the Dark, and hope to recycle some of the ideas I contributed in the last project.  For the most part, the first chapter is written and ready to be implemented!
At the moment, I’m building the project in Unity(2019.3).  It’s quite intimidating as I’ve been in teams that have used Unity before but as I am developing this project independently, I have to learn everything, including how to code!  I’m working through C# tutorials on codecademy.com and have completed the learncs.org fundamentals thus far.   Within Unity itself, I’ve set up tilemaps, the camera, and have put together this one scene! (Hurrah!)  I am also considering GameMaker 2 as a possibility as it’s highly recommended by many devs as a beginner-friendly engine.
I figured I would share my progress, interact with the community, and in the future, promote the work through this blog(AoInTheDark.com), Twitter(Ao_InTheDark), and Instagram(AoinTheDark). I also set up aointhedark at gmail . com where I can be reached about the project!
A To-Do List at the moment includes:
character movement
dialogue boxes
objects, and basic object interaction
blog post on what type of game Ao in The Dark aims to be
completing narrative script: chapter 1, 2
That’s all for now!
