I finally managed to achieve Champion Hunter, after one and a half years of pvping on and off, and to celebrate I finished off another of long-term goals on my ranger. Kudzu, the legendary longbow, its materials gathered and sacrificed into the mystic toilet in the hallowed halls of Stonemist Castle, a fact only made all the more special by the fact my beloved Aurora Glade have held it for nearly two days - and that it was me who put on its waypoint upgrade.
All those hours of chopping trees, killing nightmare wurms and stomping downed invaders, all that siege that was placed and built and destroyed, all those omnomberries harvested from under the noses of shambling Risen, all the prayers to the Random Number Goddess and all the two-edged blessings she granted in return. All that, culminating in one moment; in this, a celebration with friends in a castle I have come to call my home.
Birdsong will now forever fill her ears, and flowers spring to life wheree'er she steps. As for where she goes; well, where else is there to go, but up?

i keep trying to come up with a more coherent way to phrase this, and i keep failing, so fuck it i am gonna post this:
i really think that people trying to tie the current LS events to the realm of torment/abaddon are reaching too far.
much of the speculation stems from the similarities between the 'map' of the realm of torment in nightfall, and scarlet's 'map' which was posted in the wall of her house in prosperity, and which bears an (admitedly strong) resemblance to the 'map' of the realm of torment
thing is, scarlet's drawing was not in fact a map
it was an attempt at giving form to the vision she saw while in omadd's machine - at making a diagram of some kind of the eternal alchemy.
it stands to reason that the pale tree is at the centre - she is/was sylvari, and the pale tree is at the centre of all sylvari's 'worlds' (even the nightmare court, who seek to corrupt/free the tree and the dream from ventari's teachings)
i am also coming more to subscribe to the theory that rather than a freed dragon champion, the sylvari are part of tyria's 'immune response system', and that the pale tree is essentially a giant lymph node. any life entwined with tyria (even humans, apparently, despite their being a foreign species) would necessarily see tyria's 'spirit' being at its centre.
surrounding the pale tree are six orbs, which we now know to relate to the six elder dragons. the first orb which crashes into 'tyria' is the one thought to relate to zhaitan, whose energy/consumed magic dispersed following its 'defeat' in arah.
thing is, scarlet - and more importantly the player character - did not create these papers in a vacuum.
the 'map' of the realm of torment was not a map in the cartographical sense; torment is not a geographical place on tyria but a section of the mists which was twisted and corrupted by abbadon (and before him, arachnidae). its 'map' is symbolic in nature; alchemical, even, in that it gives a symbolic structure to something which is mutable and ethereal in nature. it likely came from the order of whispers, who at this point were a highly secretive religious order who were charged with preventing the return of abaddon and the protection of elona.
furthermore, unlike scarlet's 'map' of her vision, the map of Torment does not place tyria at the centre. the central circle of the Torment map contains:
the Vortex (a tear in reality that Varesh opened in her attempt to summon Abaddon)
the Gate of Torment, the first place that players encounter inside the actual realm itself
Abaddon's Gate, the entrance to the prison of Abaddon itself
the Gate of Anguish, the entrance to the Domain of Anguish which Kormir tasks the player with purifying following the events of the final battle with Abaddon
it's true that the centre circle contains arguably the most powerful 'place' markers, but even then these map markers only act as signposts to 'safe' areas; places such as the Foundry of Failed Creations do not appear on any map, and indeed likely cannot be mapped (there are also direct entrances to Torment from other places in Tyria; for example, the Door of Komalie in the ring of fire islands opens directly into the Foundry, despite their being far away from Elona geographically). all this, to me, supports the idea that this map is allegorical and contains no actual relation to any real world place.
it's highly likely that scarlet would have encountered alchemical and allegorical maps in her studies, especially while studying under the asura colleges. she would have absorbed ideas and structures, which would have helped build the framework that she used to understand what she was when inside omadd's machine.
the player character later sees this illustration she draws, based on her visions - indeed, has it specifically pointed out to them - and subsequently see the pattern replicated during their own venture into omadd's machine. this is not a coincidence, as they have already had the structure and representation implanted into their unconscious mind, and have already encountered on some level descriptions of What Scarlet Saw. in short, they see things the way they do because on some level, it's how they expect to see them.
i concede that this may not be the case, i may be wrong, and there may indeed be a connection to Torment. one of the potential fractals, for example, dealt with the fall of Abaddon; the one we got ended up being related to Scarlet and the ley lines, and the argument goes something like "well surely the same would have been true of abaddon?"
thing is, we have no dev response to that question one way or the other. moreover, linking this to Torment would necessarily draw in Abaddon and Kormir, as well as the other human gods. prior to the launch of gw2, the devs stated that one of the  reasons they had the human  gods withdraw is that they wanted the story to be less about humans and their gods and more about the races of tyria as a whole. granted, the personal story did meander through a lot of human gods and their culture, but it would be impossible to meander through orr and not have that be the case. LS2 on the other hand looks to be dealing more with the sylvari and their origins/potential to be corrupted, and the mysteries of glint.
tl;dr i am strongly of the opinion that people who are expecting abaddon and/or torment to be involved in LS2 are setting themselves up for disappointment

you know (speaking as a person with a chronic pain disorder/joint disorder) if taimi is supposed to have mobility issues and chronic pain, then it would make much more sense for her to have the Torment debuff (damage over time which is increased by movement) than Crippled (which simply slows movement, and is... rather unfortunately named, in this case)
it doesn't help that the Torment visual looks like little red needles of pain attacking the joints
you know
like joint pain does....

one of my biggest problems with the writing in the Personal Story is when it basically requires everyone involved to be stupid in order to work
take the Apatia storyline for example
you and Apatia meet up with Sayeh and go in search of the Krait anti-Zhaitan orb (what exactly this is, where it comes from, etc, is unknown and it's p much a plot device). Regardless of whether you ambush the caravan or get captured, you and Apatia are separated after you retrieve the orb.
So rather than put the orb into the TARDIS backpack that we all know exists and go straight after Apatia, we trot off to Trinity (which, keeping in mind that Tyria is somewhat scaled down from GW1, must be a good several days trek away from the Krait city), have the Battle (which would take up a good chunk of a day itself, especially including the aftermath), and then trot back to see what happened to Apatia. To then be shocked and surprised that she was captured, tortured, killed, risen, et cetera.
and i'm just
you could have prevented all of this by just retrieving Apatia before heading back to FT. Take Sayeh with you for backup ("we're goin' on a krait hun"). You and Apatia kick record amounts of bum at Fort Trinity, everyone goes home happy. Or hell if you have to kill off Apatia, have her make some meaningful sacrifice at FT (holding off those vet giants, for example) rather than have her die due to contrived protagonist stupidty.
(Do not even get me started on Trahearne's determination to walk blindly into a trap in Forging the Pact. do not.)

I usually manage to resist the urge to makeover my characters but the new sylvari face with freckles was just too cute to resist. To celebrate I decided to change up her armour, too, and ended up with something which probably technically breaks the TOS. Oops?
