We’re halfway there, folks! In honor of completing chapter 17 of a projected 34 chapters I figured I’d make a post about Hazel’s story, since it’s linked in my bio, but I never actually posted about it.
It largely follows the canon of Julian’s upright end with minor-to-moderate divergence based on Hazel’s personality and such. Early chapters are a little more adherent to exact canon, but later chapters feature more divergence in dialogue and such.
I would be honored if anyone wanted to check it out. I try to update at least once per week, and will probably post future chapter updates here when I upload them to AO3.

Some happy holidays chibi designs for the Arcana characters :D
I find it cute how aside from Julian and Portia, they’d all likely celebrate different things. It’s a great opportunity to draw for the different late year holidays.
The headcanons I based these off are that in a modern AU, Portia and Julian are Jewish, Asra is Muslim, Muriel is athiest, Nadia is Hindu, and Lucio is Christian (at least to celebrate Christmas)

Echoes of the Past - Day 15
@arcana-echoes
Last day here we go! Broke this one down into pieces because the point of divergence greatly affects what changes >:3c
In Another Life – what would have happened if they never went to Vesuvia? If they didn’t die from the plague, or if they had left when Asra asked them to? Who would they be?
Never went to Vesuvia:
If Hazel never went to Vesuvia, they probably would’ve tried to work as a cook in one of the restaurants or taverns in the port city near where they grew up until they raised enough money to travel somewhere to study magic. They may have tried to go to Zadith to study. There’s a chance that they may have still encountered Julian at some point during his travels, either before or after the plague, and may well have still found themself charmed by the roguish doctor.
If it was before the plague, they may have ended up in Vesuvia anyway though it’s possible they’d have stayed dead, as they wouldn’t have had the connection with Asra.
If it was after the plague but pre canon – while he was on the run – it’s possible they may have tried to accompany him back to Vesuvia though the effectiveness of that would depend on how close they got with him before he went back. If they’re involved enough that they could out-stubborn him into letting them try to help.
If they went off to study and didn’t bump into him at any point, they might have become a travelling magician – exploring the world and helping people along the way.
Of these three scenarios, not meeting him at all provides Hazel the best outcome, but still much worse off than in canon. Though they would get to see the world much earlier, they likely would be somewhat reclusive – travelling alone and having no close connections to any people or places. They’d miss out on a lot of experiences due to avoiding situations that would put them outside their comfort zone, probably never having reason to put themself out there.
Didn’t die from the plague:
If they’d been successful in relaying their findings to Julian, it’s possible that both of them may have been branded criminals if they were able to go through with killing Lucio (for real – rather than him accidentally destroying his own body during the ritual) and fled Vesuvia. They may never have gone back, aware of what they did and knowing it was for the greater good. However, they may both have succumbed to some of their more toxic traits. Julian likely wouldn’t have grown out of his self-sacrificing tendencies, and Hazel would have been more likely to indulge him, rather than try to confront him. (eg. the choices that get you reversed end.)
Left with Asra when asked:
If they’d let Asra talk them into leaving, they probably never would have been able to face Julian if they ever saw him again. The guilt at running away would’ve ate them alive, and they likely would never be able to truly let go of that. They probably would’ve become even more reclusive due to the shame, keeping mostly to themself and interacting almost exclusively with Asra.

why you should keep writing your story
because it’s a puzzle no one else will ever arrange the same way as you.
because there are ideas that simply won’t come to you until you write down the wrong words.
because all the bad scenes are the bones of the wonderful scenes.
because someone will love it: someone will read it once, and twice, and thrice; someone will ramble to you about the complexity of it; someone will doodle your characters out of love; someone will find it in exactly what they were looking for with or without knowing it.
because they have things to say, your characters. they’ve told you all those secrets and they have more to tell you, if you will listen.
because you love it even when you don’t; even when it drives you mad or when it accidentally turns into apathy; even when you think you’re doing it all wrong; you love it, and it loves you back.
because you can get a treasure even from things that go wrong; because if a story crumbles down you can build a shinier one on the same spot; because you won’t know where it will take you until it takes you there.

Echoes of the Past - Day 14
@arcana-echoes
Switching up the last two days, because this information is necessary to understand the scenario presented in the “Another Life” prompt~
The events leading up to Hazel’s death were inspired by some writing by the wonderful @juliandev0rak which you can read HERE
Freebie! – How they died.
Despite having been apprenticing under Julian at his clinic for a while before the plague hit, they weren’t well versed enough in science and medicine to be of much use in helping him research a cure for the plague. Frustrated by not being able to be more helpful, they decided to approach plague research from an angle they DID understand – magic. As such, they ended up in more of a divide-and-conquer situation. Even back then, Julian was rather skeptical of magic and – though polite about it – he sort of dismissed their suggestion that the plague may be tied to magic and/or could be cured with magic.
Despite this, their instincts insisted there was some kind of magical connection, so they devoted themself to looking into it. They researched the track of the plague, how and where it spread, and any possible significant common factors between the places it hit. Eventually, by combining extensive research and anecdotes from travelers and merchants passing through the ports, Hazel is eventually able to trace the single commonality back to a certain obnoxious Count.
Wanting to share their discovery with Julian as soon as possible, and worried that written communication might be intercepted, they immediately head for the palace where they know Julian is working on a cure. They make it as far as the library before being intercepted by Valdemar and Vulgora. Valdemar had inquired where they thought they were going in such a hurry. Hazel didn’t interact much with them, always feeling there was something really creepy about them. And not working in the palace themself, they didn’t have much occasion to be around them. They only vaguely mentioned having something important to discuss with Julian, but were halted by the two courtiers.
Desperate to get past them, they made the fatal mistake of saying they think they found the source of the plague, at which point Valdemar had Vulgora knock them out. Vulgora wanted to just kill them, but Valdemar wanted to avoid a suspicious death and instead fed them a plague beetle. Despite wanting to dissect them, they didn’t want to risk Hazel being able to tell anyone else about their discovery so they shipped them off to the Lazaret to die.
Hazel’s deep regrets at being unable to reveal their findings before death and their unspoken feelings combined with their powerful, instinctive magic when they died. For the remainder of the days of the Lazaret’s operation, there were claims and reports of a strange shadow lurking around the island…

Echoes of the Past - Day 13
@arcana-echoes
Aftermath – what happened with everyone/everything they left behind from the time they died up until they were brought back? Did anyone know they were gone besides Asra?
The first people to find out that Hazel died of the plague was actually some of their regular customers at the shop and word quickly spread from there (hence how wary many of the people in the neighborhood were of them when they mysteriously reappeared).
Julian
The first of their close friends to learn of their death was Julian.
They’d been working separately for a while – Julian had accepted the invitation to work on a cure at the palace while Hazel stayed behind to divide their time between the clinic and their shop.
Despite Julian’s insistence that the plague had a medical explanation, Hazel was certain there was something magical about it and used the books in the shop to do their own research.
They kept in touch with Julian through letters – most were strictly professional updates, but they’d sometimes send separate, personal updates. When the letters stopped abruptly, he just assumed they’d gotten busy until news of their death eventually reached him.
His chosen coping method was to bury himself even deeper in his work on researching a cure.
Asra
By the time he returned to Vesuvia, they’d long since died.
He found out by asking around the marketplace, when he’d been home for a few days and they didn’t show up, if anyone had seen them and knew where he could find them.
Hazel had put him on the official paperwork as the one responsible for the shop should anything happen to them, so there was no issue about the fate of the shop.
He resolved quickly to find a way to bring them back, no matter what he had to do. The guilt of their last interaction being a fight, combined with him not being there when they caught and then died from the plague, made the decision easy.
Muriel
He found out when Asra told him about it.
He mostly just thought it was a shame they’d died, since they were one of very few people he didn’t dislike and weren’t troublesome to be around.
Also, Inanna liked them, so they couldn’t be that bad.
He didn’t really need any convincing when Asra recruited him to help hijack the ritual so Asra could bring them back.

Echoes of the Past - Day 12
@arcana-echoes
Holidays – did they celebrate any special holidays/events? What was their favorite?
Venterre had a few annual harvest festivals, which Hazel enjoyed greatly. Their favorite was the biggest one held in the late fall near their birthday every year. It was when the majority of the crops would be harvested so and a huge celebratory feast and week-long festival was held in town. When they were little their Grandparents would tell them that it was being held for their birthday, and even once they were old enough to know that it wasn’t, they still had a special fondness for it.

Echoes of the Past - Day 11
@arcana-echoes
Defining Moment — what was their coming-of-age moment? A point where everything changed?
Truly, despite everything else that happened before then, the moment they really came into themself was when they stood against Asra’s wishes and resolved to stay in Vesuvia to help fight the plague. Before then, they pretty much just rolled with whatever happened in a sort of ‘Oh this is what we’re doing now? Okay.’ sort of way. That was the first time they really took charge of the direction they were heading. And it DID change everything.
Not only did it end up deciding their fate, in the grand scale, but on a smaller scale it boosted their confidence and reinforced their sense of self and who they wanted to be. They wanted to be someone who would stand and fight for what they believe in. Who wouldn’t run, when staying meant they might be able to make a difference and help others.

Echoes of the Past - Day 10
@arcana-echoes
Cuisine – do they have any sort of relationship with food? What they grew up eating or making for others?
They LOVE food. Cooking, eating, all of it! Their grandmother was always in the kitchen and she taught them how to cook. They love, love, love making food for people they care about. Seeing someone happy eating the food they made is a feeling like nothing else.
Hazel grew up with a lot of pasta dishes, but loves trying new recipes. They’re a very good cook and can make just about anything if they have a recipe. They’re also really creative and skilled at modifying recipes and coming up with dish ideas that aren’t necessarily “weird” but are somewhat uncommon. [ie they don’t use unusual ingredient combos, but they’ll serve expected ingredients in an unexpected form.]
Because of their roots in pasta dishes, they DO like to use pasta as a base for recipes. Their favorite thing to do, though, is find out what their loved ones like and surprise them with it.
They prefer to keep things simple with their cooking, using relatively few ingredients and spices, but using them effectively. They hate when things have too much going on that you can’t really taste anything. They’re of the firm belief that you should be able to taste whatever you’re putting in, and not cover it up.
Hazel actually loves to bake even more than they love to cook. They have a hell of a sweet tooth themself, and love getting creative with decorations on deserts that aren’t as practical to do on savory dishes. But they’re also equally happy to make simple, plain desserts. So long as it tastes good, they’re not too picky about what it looks like, but they’re also not about to half-ass decorations especially if it’s for an event.
