The term 'Orchid Drinker' as an in-world, woodlands-specific, term for Lesbians¹ came to me in a dream where Elo was very embarrassedly trying to explain the concept to Merri after being accused of sleeping with one of Merri's sisters.
I mean, look at this thing:

(Photo of Cattlianthe 'Barbara Belle' by A./B. Larsen from Wikipedia)
You see it, right?
I haven't yet come up with a dwarven term. I know more about plants than I do geology...
Anyway, maybe I'll write the scene out at some point.
¹ Can't have the term 'Lesbians' if there's no Isle of Lesbos...

Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo we’ve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and it’s revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.

You have been sentenced to death in a magical court. The court allows all prisoners to pick how they die and they will carry it out immediately. You have it all figured out until the prisoner before you picks old age and is instantly transformed into a dying old man. Your turn approaches.

One detail I've always really liked in dunmeshi's worldbuilding is the difference in life expectancies among races. I don't mean the different rates at which they age but specifically how long they live from the point of view of their own group. For example, dwarfs are directly stated to age 2.5x slower than a tall-man, but where tall-men's life expectancy is only about 60, for a dwarf it would be about 200 (equivalent to 80).
Tumblr media
At first this stood out as odd to me but it makes sense when you look up the average lifespan for every race. In general, the short-lived races all have a smaller age of maturity to life expectancy ratio than all the long-lived ones.
I really love this discrepancy because the implication here is that long-lived races not only have longer lifespans due to aging slower, but they also just live longer generally due to a better quality of life, as they have taken the most fertile and livable lands to themselves, resulting in less conflicts over resources and faster technological developments.

Ultimately how long you live isn't just a fantastical element of the setting, but a political one as well.

Webzine submissions open for writing!
Tumblr media
Dear writers on tumblr, pour yourself a drink on the house. We've been asking for editors for our webzine in the last few weeks (you can still sign up here). We are focusing on going into different worlds. Now, we can announce that we are accepting writing submissions for it!
Who can submit writing?
All writers can submit writing to our zine, whether you have already published other works. Or have previously shared other writing pieces on [tumblr] or Archive of our own (or similar platforms). Our editors will pick their favourite pieces for each category based on different criteria, the most important thing is how well the pieces fit our theme Portal to Another World.
What kind of writing can I submit?
We are open to any form of writing! You can submit any form of writing from poetry, prose, flash fiction, a short story, song lyrics or even a non-fiction essay. As long as it fits the theme and is unpublished. Our theme is Portal to Another World. Unpublished in this case means it isn't published in print or online. You can't submit excerpts from your WIPs when they can't be understood outside the context of your WIP.
Will you compensate me?
As much as we would love to pay all contributors, we don't have the funds. We discussed this on our server and decided we want our zine accessible to all readers. Understand this is a passion project, so you will not be compensated for your writing. The finished zine will be shared as a free PDF download with a pay-what-you-want option on our KoFi. The little money we make from the zine will be used to fund future projects of writeblrcafé (e.g. a second zine) and boosts for our Discord server.
Where can I submit my writing?
Just fill in the form below! You can submit your writing as a PDF file. The word limit for prose is 2500 words. The limit for poetry is 50 verses. You can only submit one piece of writing. If your piece of writing is longer, feel free to submit it. We will decide on a case-to-case basis. We hope many of you take this chance to collaborate on our webzine, which will be compiled in a compelling design.
Submissions for artwork will open soon!
Please reblog this post to spread the word in the writing community!

Ok so doing this for my main four (well, five really since Chrackle will want to get in on the action here) since Dru did it for her main three.
Selene: *sighs and casts Hold Person*
Chrackle: *flies down and lands on your shoulder and squawks in your ear, maybe nips it too for good measure*
Edwin: *Most likely casts Windwalk to catch up, then casts grasping vines to stop you in your tracks*
Meredith: *swears a whole bunch then swears a lot more because she needs to catch up to do anything that won't just kill you*
Yoruk: *chases after and grapples to the floor. Good luck pushing off a dwarf that's in full plate*
The two clerics and the paladin will most likely give you a very stern talking to before deciding if you need charges pressed against you. As for the wizard and her familiar.... that depends on how hard the smack was and whether you do anything else to them once the spell wears off.

There should be a fanfic writing game called the showrunners challenge where someone writes a story and partway through someone else can play things like "actor leaves after 4000 more words" or "topic now too politically sensitive due to unforeseen world events" or "lost rights to that reference"

Happy STS! My question is: Do you have a trope that always (or almost always) appears in your stories? Why that trope?
Hi there, thank you for the ask. I sincerely apologise for taking so long to answer this as it's one of my favourite types of question.
The biggest trope that comes up in every piece of writing I do for all my series is definitely Found Family. This is almost entirely down to these series amounting to what is basically fanfic of a D&D campaign. Forging a family out of those people you spend your time adventuring with is a common staple of that genre and it makes sense to bring that into my writing.
Another trope that nearly always comes up is Angst and Lots of It. This is usually a result of all the trauma that the characters go through and the poor mental health that results from that. I'm a whumper at heart, and I love nothing more than exploring the trauma that results from the events that happen during high fantasy adventure shenanigans. It also helps that the original GM for the campaign I write about was extremely talented at creating events that were legitimately traumatising both for the characters and the players at the table.

Happy Thoughts Thursday!!
What are your characters' thoughts on multi-person relationships?
Hi Imperium, I'm so sorry it's taken so long to answer this. I needed a bit of time to properly think about this question, then life happened.
I'll be answering for the Main Four characters here, as I'm the most familiar with them, and this gives me an opportunity to dive into the question properly.
Selene
Selene honestly doesn't have any trouble with mutli-person romantic and/or sexual relationships. For other people. However, for herself, she'd really prefer to be in a monogamous relationship. This is almost entirely due to her issues with abandonment and her general cultural upbringing for the short time she lived with her biological family. As someone who is aroace and extremely sex-repulsed, Selene is also very insecure about Edwin leaving her due to the pressures of societal norms.
Speaking of the a-spec community, Selene is quite happy to both see and be involved in multi-person platonic relationships, QPRS included.
Edwin
Edwin, I think, is probably someone who prefers monogamy for any relationships that he is personally involved in. Like Selene, he honestly doesn't mind that polygamy/polyamory exists and, as long as all involved consent and are happy, it's none of his business what other people get up to in their personal relationships. He's much more open to multi-person platonic relationships, having lived in Fangthane for a little over a decade and seeing what cridhe-dàime looks like in that cultural context.
Meredith and Yoruk
I'm putting these two together for what will become a fairly obvious reason (and is probably already obvious to anyone that's read my post-campaign stuff). Neither are against multi-person relationships at all. While neither are necessarily interested in polyamory or polygamy for themselves, they're not going to blink at anyone involved in those kinds of relationships.
While Meredith and Yoruk are both in a monogamous marriage, as Meredith considers Elowyn her cridhe-dàime (which is basically the dwarven in-universe equivalent of a QPR partner) both of them consider the woodling a part of their relationship as well. Neither of them are romantically or sexually attracted* to, or involved with Elowyn in that regard, and that part of the relationship is purely platonic. However, as far as most of Fangthane is concerned, the three of them are basically considered to be part of one family unit so if, for example, Meredith got hurt then the messenger will simply find whichever of Yoruk or Elowyn is closer to tell them and assume that the other will be told in due course.
*There is an argument to be made that Merri probably was attracted to Elowyn at some point, given all the unintentional flirting those two did during the early parts of their adventure. If she was, Merri neither acknowledged or acted on it.
