HAPPY (late) BIRTHDAY PSYCHONAUTS!!! I can't believe this game is 19 years old! Many thanks to the game that changed my brain chemistry forever 😊

Found my old notes of Otto headcanons:

-low empathetic and has trouble reading faces and social cues

-has weakest psi powers due to a mix of genuinely not knowing he had them for a while, low empath- trouble connecting with other minds, genetics, and doesn't like relying on them for everything

-hence why he has that necklace as it helps him with his powers

-has trouble expressing his emotions and processing thoughts so he expresses them abstractly with his inventions

-he is the closest with Bob, Compton, Ford, and connects well with Sasha

-very prideful of his work

-prefers not using much psi powers when building as he likes using his hands as it helps him stay active and avoid arthritis

-he had a bad habit of relying on telepathy however because he'd have trouble reading faces and wanted to be able to understand people's intentions

-Ford, Lucy, and Compton had to give him an intervention and lecture him on when it's best to use telepathy while ironically using telepathy to tell this to him

-has extremely high mental walls and doesn't like having people especially inexperienced Psychonauts inside his mind

-He only really trusted Ford or Cassie, Bob or Helmut to go into his mind for check ups

-this has caused him to not be checked in a long time and like Bob, has a lot of bottle emotions

-However he believes their is nothing wrong/ of note to even check even though he probably does

-Strongest in Telepathy, and confusion,

-he has trouble finding early on social boundaries sometimes and can get very touchy with closer friends like picking Compton up like hamburger

-a mix of extremely blunt yet cheery but very secretive

-habit of acting way more suspicious then he actually is

-he's very old school but he tries his best to be up to date with the youth tm

-besides the awkwardness at times he's actually really good with mentoring kids in his older age and is especially passionate about teaching them about brains and his inventions. He might go a little too far with talks of death and brains preserved but most kids actually like that kinda morbid talk

-like the old grandpa who loves his stories and gives out those old people candies, he might trying to hard to be compensating for being a little out of touch but he's got great spirit

-besides inventing, he loves photography, journaling, making figurings, comic books, science fiction novels, ski ball, GIS/ maps, hoarding shiny things, geology, fish and spiders.

-very much the grandpa who ate paint instead of yogurt meme

other times you get a deposed gzarina showing up at your doorstep with one of your commrads absolutely on the brink of losing it, and the gzarina's son, who is so fucking mad he's in the smelly ass woods rn

It's striking how much the plot of Psychonauts 1 + 2 can be seen as a direct parallel to the rise of the original Psychonauts and the Psychic Seven, except basically as the "good ending" version to the tragedy that led up to the Deluge of Grulovia.

A gathering of young psychics to a camp meant to train them in Psychonauts 1 vs a gathering of young men and women gathering together to pioneer knowledge their psychic abilities.

Both gatherings are changed as a result of a young talented Grulovian (Raz and Lucrecia respectively) joining, involving a budding romance between the "leader" of the group due to the charismatic qualities of the Grulovian (Lili Zanotto and Ford Cruller).

Things escalate when a powerful psychic suffers a break in their sanity and creates a terrible situation where everyone except a select few psychics are able to oppose them (Oleander's plot to take over the world due to his inner demons regarding his life and father vs Lucrecia becoming Maligula due to manipulation and emotional torment from a tragic mistake).

Those few psychics have to fight against that powerful psychic that they respect in order to hopefully bring them back to their senses (Raz, Lili, Sasha, Milla against Oleander vs the Psychic Six against Maligula), and while they succeed eventually...

This of course is where the differences become evident, since Raz and his father ultimately help to soothe what caused Oleander's mental break and help to better understand the complex relationship Raz has with his own mind and father. Helmut nearly dies against Maligula and Ford ultimately brings Lucy back through highly illegal means that riddles him with guilt, and he ultimately shatters his own mind afterwards.

The end of the Psychonauts 1 is triumphant, with Raz and his friends/co-workers and family able to move forward to trying to face their next challenges, while Ford, Lucy, and Helmut are essentially dead to the world, the Psychonauts as an organization born but the Psychic Six shattered by the ordeal.

And then Psychonauts 2 has new talented blood who play a role in the growth and continuation of the Psychonauts as an organization, while also having to address the demons and mistakes of the past (Raz + the Interns Six becoming the next generation of psychics at the organization vs Sasha, Truman, Milla, Hollis, and Oleander having to continue the organization after the original Psychic Six fall apart).

I can't think of much to add to this analysis of the parallels but damn if they arent there!! I love the ties between Raz and his Nona they're so fascinating... they're so family yknow.
