Meet our AD Council President Kate Stodart!
Tumblr media
(Close up image of Kate Stodart looking a bit fun and funky with a pixie cut and some jewellery)
Who are you and what's your life trajectory? Hey, I'm Kate, and my life trajectory is as uncertain as the fate of the USA. Whose isn't? Am-i-right?! Let's bring it back... I'm in my third year of a BFA, working predominately in installation, performance and sculpture (also known as SPI) and am usually plottering around campus. Come say hey sometime!
What do you do on campus? As the big dog on AD Council I'm in charge of overseeing the implementation of projects/programs/cool things that our students have asked for, and that our councillors have been working on, as well as linking up with students and staff to improve our overall student wellbeing. To be honest, our 2017 council is a killer group of doers and shakers. It's an honour to be working with them! Did you get into politics for the shoulder pads and gender discrimination, or was there something else that inspired you? Must admit, the shoulder pads were a big drawcard. As was joining an incredible team of dedicated students and friends. Can't go wrong with shoulder padded kick-ass colleagues! I'm also a sucker for community involvement and for anything justice related *cue Kim Possible soundtrack*
You're quite young to be leading the nation-state that is UNSW Art & Design. What's your vision for the polis? World domination. But until then, improvement in communication between students and the faculty. All we can ever ask for is a step in the right direction my friends, and that's what we're going to achieve this year!
Have you made an effort to make your wardrobe more presidential? Haha nah. Though my new pixie haircut sits in that "could be a powerhouse/got her act together, could be 14yr old Justin Bieber".  Awesome! Now to round it all off… what's your actual deal though? What's your URL? What are you like IRL? Will the real Kate Stodart please stand up? IRL I'm a pretty chilled out gal doing too many things at once. Who isn't though? Last year I worked at the Kudos intern in sem 1 and followed it up as Artsweek co-ordinator in sem 2. This year I've just co-hosted a charity screening of Chasing Asylum at Kudos and co-launched a brand new program called Contemporary Curating. Hmm let's throw in a fun fact to wrap it up: I've crossed the border from India to Nepal on foot!

What would you never wear? I’d never wear my trackies to Uni but I live in them at home.
Who inspires you? My mum. She’s a really cool girl.
What’s everyone wearing at Uni at the moment? Lots of overalls – they’re so handy.
What are you listening to? Hozier, but I like listening to Celtic music when I paint.

Meet Jenny Anagnostopoulos!
Tumblr media
(Black and white image of Jenny Agnostopoulos standing in front of an exposed brick wall, staring straight into the camera, confronting and reclaiming the male gaze)
Who are you and what do you do on campus?
I’m the Kudos intern for semester 1! I work closely with the director of Kudos, Luke Letourneau, and assist him with day-today tasks. I’m also managing the White Cube volunteers and developing a performance program to hopefully kick off by the end of semester.
What exactly is it about Kudos that revs your engine?
Kudos is in a unique position where it reaps the rewards of exciting student activity whilst keeping its doors open to other non-UNSW A&D artists and practitioners. It is an increasingly important player and contributor to the Sydney art scene due to its incredibly responsive nature and quick exhibition turn-over. Every year I’ve watched Kudos grow into something bigger, whilst remaining totally approachable and accomodating. If there was an equivalent of ‘girl next door’ of galleries, Kudos would be it.
If/when you decide to cast off from society and found a micronation in international waters, what will it be called? What will your ethos be?
The people can call it/do what they want as long as we see the permanent separation of pineapple and pizza. Mangoes or watching a man go?
I’m a pretty big fan of mangoes and I’m afraid of what’s implied in the latter. There’s nothing to be afraid of in a separatist feminist utopia. Now to round it all off… what's your actual deal though? What's your URL? What are you like IRL?
Aside from Kudos you’ll find me around campus finishing off my third year in Art Theory. I gravitate towards cultural politics, queer theory and ideas around how expressions of identity play out on digital platforms. Last year I curated the exhibition nsfw at Firstdraft that kickstarted all that and I hope to continue to work on similar projects! In the meantime I’m juggling a few jobs, so don’t be surprised if you see me both at the AGNSW and MCA front desk, as well as preparing for our TEDxSydney Youth event.
I’m currently on the hunt to rediscover lost 90’s/naughties rave/punk anthems and probably watching too many Netflix documentaries on food. Also I can’t cook, except for a one-off spanakopita that would make a yiayia weep. Mid-year I’ll be going away with the World Biennale’s class to Documenta in Athens and Kassel, as well as the Venice Biennale. My full-time hobbies at the moment are consequently making Air BnB wish-lists and definitely not enough budget management.

Meet Jade Muratore!
Tumblr media
Who are you and what kind of books are you hitting this semester?
My name is Jade Muratore and I am hitting many books of the art theory and curatorial variety as I’m currently halfway through my Masters in Curating and Cultural Leadership.
What do you do around UNSW Art & Design?
Aside from my studies and general loitering, I’m also the new gallery coordinator for AD Space.
 What’s the deal with that?
As the coordinator it’s my job to manage the day-to-day running of the gallery, working closely with the rest of the Arc @ UNSW Art & Design team. This includes planning exhibitions, installing and de-installing, promoting the shows and organising opening events.
AD Space has a legacy as a designated exhibition space for students looking to show their work (often for the first time) and to experiment with new ideas and modes of working. AD Space often hosts a number of class shows each semester giving students an opportunity to exhibit their work in a semi-professional context. There are few spaces within the university, and certainly off campus, where students with little to no exhibition experience can have the opportunity to show their work. The gallery is a really great transition space between the classroom and the arts community at large.
It must be exciting taking over stewardship of a gallery space. Do you have a vision for AD Space in 2017?
Yes it is! My vision for AD Space is definitely to maintain its position within the campus community as a place accessible for students to present their work, whether they be second year ceramics students or MFA students exhibiting their work for final assessment. I would also like to see the gallery continue as a teaching tool for lecturers on campus by facilitating class exhibitions where students can create work towards a presentation outcome and also begin to learn some of the basics in the installation of their work for exhibition.
It would also be really great to see the audience of AD Space grow, to see more students and faculty at shows, especially at opening nights. I think this can really add to the community vibe on campus and create the kind of camaraderie between students solidifying their relationships and supporting one another in preparation for the big bad art world beyond.
How can students get involved with AD Space?
The best way students can get involved is by exhibiting at AD Space! As mentioned, many students are already doing this through their classes, but there is also room for students to propose their own shows whether that be a solo show or a group show with some of their peers. The invitation is also open to Art Theory and Curatorial students who are interested in curating a show of students works.
I am currently working on a volunteer program for the gallery, similar to Kudos Gallery’s very popular White Cube program. The volunteer program will give students the opportunity to get hands-on experience in installation and gain skills in the preparation and promotion of an exhibition. Keep an eye out for more details soon.
Awesome! Now to round it all off… what's your actual deal though? What's your URL? What are you like IRL? Will the real Jade Muratore please stand up?
Hahahaha… What is my deal, anyway?
Well, outside of AD Space and my Masters I also sit on the board of directors at Firstdraft Gallery which is Australia’s longest running artist run initiative. I’ve been working on Firstdraft’s first ever international program which is super exciting. It’s a collaboration with a London-based art collective called Auto Italia which kicks off at the end of this month with a series of artist workshops and a live night event to cap it off. Drawing reference from folkloric interpretations of witchcraft through to bio-tech and body hacking, the program pulls a group of international and local artists together to uncover ideas around identities and figures that can disrupt, subvert and redirect power. I am VERY excited about this!
Also, I am an artist myself working mostly within the art collective Hissy Fit with my collaborators Emily O’Connor and Nat Randall. Hissy Fit make mostly performance and video work, looking toward notions of deviancy and control, acted on and/or through the gendered body. Hissy Fit came together in 2013 as recipients of the inaugural Stephen Cummins Bequest Residency at Performance Space and have been making work together ever since. We’ve presented works at Carriageworks, Museum of Contemporary Art, Performance Space, Campbelltown Arts Centre, Arts House (Melbourne), Success Gallery (Fremantle), Sydney Contemporary, Fontanelle Gallery (Adelaide), and Sydney College of the Arts Galleries, among others.
I don’t have a URL but Hissy Fit does! If anyone feels compelled to learn more about what we do… Website http://www.hissy-fit.com/  and Instagram @_hissyfit_ .

Meet Pip Louey!
Tumblr media
Who are you and what do you do on campus?
This year I’m an Engagement Officer on Art & Design Student Council, which means that I’m here to help students get more involved in campus life and activities. So if you’ve got any weird and wonderful ideas for events/initiatives that you’d like to share with our creative community, I’d love to hear them!
Did you get into politics because you like to think of yourself as an ambassador of sorts, or was there something else that inspired you?
Just as art has the power to give people voice, I started becoming interested in political stuff because it’s one platform where people can speak up and speak out (something particularly important for young and marginalised people at the moment). Don’t get me wrong, it can be a fraught and entangled field but I believe that being engaged and active in framing issues that affect us is important for society.  Whilst on council I’d be stoked if students chatted with us about any issues that are on their minds. Then we can work towards putting on events that reflect the interests of students.
Life is a highway and you have no choice but to ride it (all night long or for 30 mins a day). Who do you wish was in the passenger seat next to you?
Charles Perkins! The Freedom Rides were an unbelievably important moment in Australia’s history and I’d love to sit beside him listening to his story, ask a million and one questions, and chat about how he fought for social change.
Awesome! Now to round it all off… what's your actual deal though? What's your URL? What are you like IRL? Will the real Pip Louey please stand up?
Technically I’m at uni to finish off an Art Theory / Arts degree (major in politics). I’ve just ticked over the halfway mark so there are still a couple years to go. Last year I also woke up to the fact that millions of people are already experiencing the devastating effects of climate change. I’ve since been active in environmental activism through UNSW’s Environment Collective and Fossil Free group, so that’s where I focus a lot of my time. As for other miscellaneous facts… I love brussel sprouts, hate coca-cola and would happily spend the rest of my life exploring different international supermarkets.
