it's actually crazy that a #300 legacy issue has nothing to say about nightwing's legacy outside of (once again) patting itself on the back for basically saying "and we solved all the crimes and ended poverty" with absolutely no interest in interrogating any of these politics or issues further. wolfman's pages were sweet but frankly bogged down by the knowledge that this book has absolutely no depth. the backup with no dialogue had more forward movement of a plot than the issue did.

the actual plot that is moving us into the next arc is 6 pages out of the some 30 page issue btw but my favorite part was just having heartless suddenly have a symbol he puts on everything so we can neatly label stuff for dick to find now. god forbid he do any investigating

What's going on 😬 I haven't had a chance to read yet
i mean overall nothing happens lol. it's basically some 20 pages of everyone patting dick on the back for solving all the problems and ends with a cameo from marv wolfman himself congratulating dick for solving all the problems. liked the backup though

i need to just wait for the book to end so i can judge it as a complete work at this point but williamson's batman & robin is really so jarring

if i'm being really honest i do think things like wfa are genuinely harmful to the medium because it doesn't actually exist in the service of storytelling or a desire to create art so much as shameless content creation made to appeal to people who don't want complexity or depth or conflict. if i were to be completely honest bluey is more morally and emotionally complex than the average chapter of wfa. it's a funko pop parade of characters you recognize plugged into vague, easily solved interpersonal conflicts and domestic scenes around a dinner table. puppies lick batman's face

idk maybe i'm crazy but i guess it sucks how these stories once embodied "anyone can be a hero" and have fallen back into "anyone from the chosen bloodline can be a hero"

this is a problem i have with a lot of stories and franchises lately. the tone of things has shifted from the idea of anyone being the hero to heroism being defined by bloodline and legacy. it's also why i despise the recent trend in comics where it's revealed that, actually, this character's family has a long history of vigilantism! (yes, i know silver age did this too, but it's been very prevalent again recently)
imo even beyond the fact that i think it's just not a good underlying moral that every act of goodness and heroism be defined by ancestry (for obvious reasons), i also feel like it takes so much agency away from these characters when their entire legacy is rewritten to imply that they were never meant to do anything else. the "choice" to do good is taken away for a very silly idea that they were always meant for it.
and then it's further rubbed in when these legacies are passed on to yet another character with their exact same skill set who's also never going to challenge their worldview outside of maybe some shallow plotline about having "big shoes to fill" because the meta has already decided they're a hero, so why bother thinking any more about it?
the only thing worse than poorly introduced new characters in dc comics is bloodline legacy characters that are basically just clones of their parents
