Hey peeps! it’s been SO LONG since I’ve made a post!
This is the latest version of Marisol! Yep, yet another version lol. I’ve been reworking and experimenting with her design for years and I think I finally designed the final version.
I gave her a more cel shading style with her colors/shadows/highlights since Somni, once all vis dev is designed for it, will be a webcomic. The simpler the coloring style is for me to do, the easier it would be for me to create all the pages for the webcomic.
I plan on making a video talking about the evolution of Marisol’s design and how it relates to designing characters. When I finally complete that video, I’ll post it on here.
What do you think of her latest style? Is there a previous version you prefer?

I really wanted to create an illustration to celebrate Latinx heritage month (or Hispanic heritage month of you prefer), which goes on from September 15 - October 15. I’m a proud Afro Latina and am really looking forward to celebrating for a whole month 😁🎉💃🏽

Some outfits I wore before we had to self-quarantine. The blue and white jumpsuit outfit was what I wore when I finally got to chop my hair to donate it in September last year, and the outfit with the jeans I wore a few weeks ago. The top is actually thrifted, but originally was from Antrhopologie. I plan on drawing one more ootd, but this time it’ll be the quarantine version. Stay tuned for it!

First artwork of the year! Now lemme explain...
There are certain traditions associated with New Years that ppl around the world to. They help bring good things for the year to come. This year (and last year too) I followed certain ones:
1) Bucket of water: throwing water out of a window before the new year to remove bad energy from the house
2) New Undies: the color you wear depends on what you need most for the new year. I wore a blue (for good health) and white(for happiness) one
3) 12 Grapes: Gotta eat them for good health. I placed them in the suitcase before eating them (keep reading to see why)
4) Moneys: for fortune! They also go in the suitcase
5) Suitcase: along with grapes and moneys, once the ball drops you run around with the suitcase in a circle around your place if you want to travel the next year
6) NYE Flair: just to be festive!
Bonus: cleaning your place before the new year to start the new year fresh and clean away the previous year
Anyone else have their own traditions they follow for NYE? Lemme know!

Meet the artist meme 2019! I included some closeups in case it’s hard for you to see the details. I wanted to do a more tropical color palette / feel to tap into my Dominican heritage. Did you draw one for this year too? Leave a comment with a link so I can see it! I love seeing everyone’s take and style on this meme.

What’s Your Darkest Fear?
It’s not an easy question to answer. In trying to find tips on writing a story, someone suggested I look at tips posted by Chris Oatley (a concept artist for Disney). One point it brought up is that fear is universal, and that you should confront your own darkest fear. In Toy Story, for example, Woody’s darkest fear was being forgotten and replaced. It got me thinking about my own, and in thinking about the answer, some emotions came out.
My simple answer to the question is, my darkest fear is that I’ll never fulfill my dreams. And my main dreams are: to have a place of my own, and to have a career that makes me happy.
Here’s the dilemma: I’d love to lock myself in my room and focus on what I need to do in order to get a career, but there’s a handful of kids that need to be cared for that live here too (foster kids, baby sister, nephew…). Every time I run off to my room to work on my art, I feel so guilty for not helping out. At the same time, every time I help out I feel frustrated for not being able to work on my art. It would be great if I can do both, or devote half the day to each one, but this house has kids here all day long.
I guess I could say that part of my darkest fear is also that I’d spend my life making everyone, but myself, happy. Sounds a bit pathetic, I know, but I’ve always been empathetic and it keeps me from being completely detached and only worrying about what I want.
How about you? What’s your darkest fear? No judgements here; only support.
Side note: If you want to read the article that this question came from, here’s a link to it: https://chrisoatley.com/writing-timeless-stories-toy-story/#more-131543
