Identify something that you think is good design - Leaf Urban
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A piece of design that I think is “good design” is the Leaf Urban wellness tracker by the brand Bellabeat (founder and CCO -  Urška Sršen).
I think it’s a good design because it serves a purpose; telling the wearer - the target market being women- key elements about their health and well being that regularly most would likely never pay attention too. One of its key features being it tracks something that continually affects most women - their menstrual cycle, which no design within its field does.
Another aspect I feel is "good design" is that the piece can be worn more than one way - as a bracelet, necklace or, brooch or clip- this gives the wearer their own way of expressing their own identity and personality.
Finally, the materials used to create the design are all sustainable, according to their mission statement:
“We believe in a future where technology is invisible and perfectly connected with nature.”

The materials used within this design include -  Wood composite with stone-like appeal & hypoallergenic stainless steel clip.

Carrie Dickens - Tactile Jewellery
For last week's assignment, we were tasked with looking at a design piece that runs along the theme we wish to write about for our essays.
After a very helpful meeting with my lecturer, I’ve decided that I want to continue under the theme of designs (specifically jewellery if possible) that provide aid or assistance or are a necessary part of peoples lives.
A jewellery piece that can be seen to do this is ‘Comfort Me’ by Carrie Dickens.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dickens took part in a project called “Celebrating Neurodiversity” where she was looking at autism within adults alongside how people differ in their sensory perceptions. This created a greater awareness to touch and its role within comfort. Taking from this her ‘Comfort Me’ piece has used linked nylon to create snug pieces of jewellery that, when draped, hug the body and bring comfort through the ability to manipulate them in your hands.
This is something I have been looking into within my own practice, trying to replicate the feeling of comfort through wearables or body adornments - as someone who struggles with anxiety and can become distressed easily, the idea of having something to touch or wear that would provide comfort is ingenious.

Selkies (also spelled silkies, sylkies, selchies, Scots: selkie fowk) are mythological creatures found in Irish, Scottish, Faroese, and Icelandic folklore.
Selkies are said to live as seals in the sea but shed their skin to become human on land. The stories frequently revolve around female selkies being coerced into relationships with humans by someone stealing and hiding their sealskin, often not regaining the skin until years later upon which they commonly return to the sea, forsaking their human family. The legend is apparently most common in the Northern Isles of Scotland and is very similar to those of swan maidens.
Male selkies are described as being very handsome in their human form, and having great seductive powers over human women. They typically seek those who are dissatisfied with their lives, such as married women waiting for their fishermen husbands. If a woman wishes to make contact with a selkie male, she must shed seven tears into the sea.
If a man steals a female selkie’s skin she is in his power and is forced to become his wife. Female selkies are said to make excellent wives, but because their true home is the sea, they will often be seen gazing longingly at the ocean. If she finds her skin she will immediately return to her true home, and sometimes to her selkie husband, in the sea.
Sometimes, a selkie maiden is taken as a wife by a human man and she has several children by him. In these stories, it is one of her children who discovers her sealskin (often unwitting of its significance) and she soon returns to the sea.
The selkie woman usually avoids seeing her human husband again but is sometimes shown visiting her children and playing with them in the waves.

In Scottish folklore the Ghillie Dhu or Gille Dubh was a solitary male fairy. He was kindly and reticent yet sometimes wild in character but had a gentle devotion to children. Dark haired and clothed in leaves and moss, he lived in a birch wood within the Gairloch and Loch a Druing area of the north-west highlands of Scotland.
