Y'all, the world is sleeping on what NASA just pulled off with Voyager 1

The probe has been sending gibberish science data back to Earth, and scientists feared it was just the probe finally dying. You know, after working for 50 GODDAMN YEARS and LEAVING THE GODDAMN SOLAR SYSTEM and STILL CHURNING OUT GODDAMN DATA.

So they analyzed the gibberish and realized that in it was a total readout of EVERYTHING ON THE PROBE. Data, the programming, hardware specs and status, everything. They realized that one of the chips was malfunctioning.

So what do you do when your probe is 22 Billion km away and needs a fix? Why, you just REPROGRAM THAT ENTIRE GODDAMN THING. Told it to avoid the bad chip, store the data elsewhere.

Sent the new code on April 18th. Got a response on April 20th - yeah, it's so far away that it took that long just to transmit.

And the probe is working again.

From a programmer's perspective, that may be the most fucking impressive thing I have ever heard.

I’m definitely curious about the line of thought everyone was having in the epilogue, whether or not all hollows are former sides of a person, or if they can be formed from ANYTHING, but that’s just because you made the setting so fascinating to want to explore. The fic was fantastic, and I’m so glad I found it when I did, to enjoy it in full.

So, the ambiguity of that was (pretty obviously) intentional, because I knew that any foregone conclusion I could state would have implications big enough to draw the story out for many more chapters. For example, if all hollows are Sides... what does that fucking mean? Does that mean that we need to get all the gangs back together and return them to their respective persons? Is that the root cause of all depression? Which kickstarts a whole quest. If the case is that no, not all hollows are Sides... well, then, does that mean some of them are? Who's splitting people up? What about the ones who aren't? etc, etc. It's a whole metaphysical conversation we didn't have time to have.

My personal headcanon (for my own universe) (which makes it canon. nevermind) is that hollows are a mix of all sorts of people in all sorts of different situations, and what we call 'hollow' is just a catch-all for anyone who's been emptied out in some respect. Some of them are Sides and fractions of larger people, but I think that's very, very rare. There's also groups of some lonely kid's imaginary friends who weren't needed anymore, there's victims of magic accidents gone wrong, there's people who were born of the City itself (latent energy bleedthrough forms an entire person! but only the shell!). I also imagine that when stars leave their person suits and go back to hang in the sky, their skinsuits have the potential to get up and start walking around on their own, which is... you know, just as unsettling as it sounds. What I'm saying is that there's an infinite number of reasons a hollow cluster could be formed.

If you're wondering why it's so common that hollows are formed in groups, well, it's because we're better together. I'd hate to make a fictional universe where so many people spring into existence lonely.
