Major Planet Aspects 101

*There are 30 degrees for each astrological sign or house. Understanding this will aid in calculating planetary aspects by the degrees of your placements on your own accord.

Major Aspects: conjunction (0°), opposition (180°) , square (90°), trine (120°) , sextile (60°)

Conjunction: Formed when planets share the same sign or are 0-8 degrees apart, this “easy” aspect blends the planets’ characteristics together to form a powerful connection. The planets involved act together as one. Depending on the planets involved, this could be a positive or negative thing because the planets have a difficult time separating themselves from each other and acknowledging their individual energies.  For example, Mars Conjunct Pluto could be a negative aspect due to the intensity and impulsive nature of both planets; power struggles could form and cause inner frustration and major mood swings.

Opposition: This aspect is formed when two planets possess opposing or sister signs (ex. Moon in Gemini opposition Pluto in Sagittarius) or are 180-188 degrees apart from each other. The planets involved create internalized frustrations, insecurities, and uncertainties in the individual that harbors the opposition. This is considered to be a “harsh” aspect but can prove to be beneficial since the planets involved are very aware of their differences and can therefore acknowledge their issues and learn from their wrongdoings or flaws. 

Square: Usually considered the “worst” of the planetary aspects, squares form when two planets are 90-98 degrees apart. Squares are considered the most difficult aspects to overcome because they induce tension and stress between two planets. Think of a square as a rebellious and uncertain adolescent. The planets involve have differing goals and ambitions so it is hard for them to see eye to eye. They often produce major struggles or challenges that usually lead to valuable lessons and personal growth once the planets learn to overcome their differences and work together. It’s all about compromise.

Trine: One of the easier aspects, a trine is formed when two planets are 120-128 degrees apart. A trine blends the energies of two planets, forming a flowing union. The planets accept each other and see the potential in one another. The trine provides natural gifts and abilities to the individual that possesses the aspect. These abilities appear to just …flow but for a person that has this aspect, they may not be fully aware of the talent they possess because they see it as normal or natural. They may be alarmed when they discover that not everyone can do what they do and may constantly have to be reminded that what they have is a gift. For example, those with Moon Trine Pluto have the natural ability to process deep emotions and help heal themselves and others through transforming pain into strength. Another example being that someone with Mercury Trine Neptune may have a beautiful singing voice and the ability to sing in a high pitch.

Sextile: This aspect is formed when two planets are 60 - 66 degrees apart from each other. Another “easy” aspect, a sextile is very similar to a trine in the way that it indicates talents and gifts in an individual. The difference is that the person who has the sextile between two planets is aware of these particular abilities and appreciates them more. The person is more inclined to improve or work at these abilities they possess and may be more inclined to pursue a career or life-long hobby with them. These are the energies a person expresses with ease. The planets involved understand that they create something magical together and influence the native to strengthen the knowledge, talent, and creativity the sextile brings.
