@Fanfic writers:

Lists of tutorials:
How to make images fit in mobile browsers
This is a tutorial/live example on how to make large images fit on mobile browsers but remain normal size on desktop browsers.
How to mimic letters, fliers, and stationery without using images
This is a tutorial/live example on how to mimic the look of letters, fliers, and stationery (as well as other forms of written media) without using images. For all your epistolary fic needs.
How to make a “choose your own adventure” Fic
This is a tutorial/live example on how to create a "Choose Your Own Adventure" fic. While this has been explained before (see here), this particular tutorial shows you how to use a work skin to hide the next parts from the reader until they click through to get to them.
How to make linked footnotes on Ao3
This is a live example of how an author can create linked footnotes in their work with only a little bit of HTML and no workskins required. This is best viewed by clicking "Entire Work". While I've included the actual coding in bold and italic once you click "Hide Creator's Style", there's a more detailed explanation here.
How to change text on Ao3 when the cursor is hovering over it (or clicked on mobile)
This a tutorial/live example on how to have text change or appear once a cursor is hovering over it. Helpful for pop-up spoilers, language translations, quick author's notes, etc.
How to mimic author’s notes and Kudos/Comment buttons
Anonymous on tumblr: do you have a skin that would mimic the author’s notes and review/kudos buttons section from the end of a fic? the desired effect being that the fic could go on after the “end” of the fic, so after the author’s notes and review/kudos buttons
Here's a tutorial/live example to do just that, with some of the buttons actually functioning. I'll explain more inside!
How to wrap text around images
This is a tutorial/live example on how to align images to the left or right of the screen and have text wrap around them.
How to mimic email windows
This is a tutorial/live example on how to mimic email windows on AO3 without the need to use images.
How to make ios text messages on Ao3
This is a tutorial/live example on how to mimic iOS text messages on AO3 without the need to use images. There's also a chapter on how to have emojis displayed on AO3 as well.
How to make Customized page deviders
Bored with the default page dividers? This is a tutorial/live example on how customize your page dividers with no images needed (though I do show you how you could use images if you wanted to do such a thing).
How to make invisible text (That can be highlighted)
This is a live example how to make invisible text that can only be seen by highlighting the text. Tutorial is included in text, and you can always leave comments about questions you may have.
MOBILE USERS: Sadly, this probably won't work for you, since highlighting in a mobile browser is different than web. I've tried correcting this, but have yet to find a solution.
How to make a rounded playlist
Original coding and design is from layouttest. I make no claims for it, just tweaked it so it will work on AO3.
How to create notebook lined paper on Ao3
This is a live example of my AO3 skin that allows the author to recreate the look of lined notebook paper in their work. To learn more about it, you can find the tutorial here.
Sticky notes on Ao3 without using images
This is a live example of my AO3 skin that allows the author to recreate the look of sticky notes (aka Post-Its) in their fic. To learn more about it, you can find the tutorial here.
How to make deadpool’s thinking thinking boxes on Ao3
This is a live example of my AO3 skin that allows the author to recreate the look of Deadpool's thinking boxes in their fic. To learn more about it, you can find the tutorial here.
How to make newspaper articles on Ao3
This is a live example of my AO3 skin that allows the author to recreate the look of a newspaper article in their work. To learn more about it, you can find the tutorial here.

Tʜᴇ Mᴜᴍᴍʏ (1999) Sᴇɴᴛᴇɴᴄᴇ Sᴛᴀʀᴛᴇʀs
A collection of random lines compiled from the movie “The Mummy” (1999) Feel free to change the pronouns in order to better suit the parts involved.
❝ Curse, my ass. ❞
❝ You lied to me. ❞
❝ I…am a librarian. ❞
❝ Who has touched you?! ❞
❝ I think Ill kill you. ❞
❝ You are a catastrophe! ❞
❝ Where did you get this? ❞
❝ What are you doing here? ❞
❝ Why do I put up with you? ❞
❝ You dream about dead guys? ❞
❝ Everybody knows the story. ❞
❝ Only you can resurrect me! ❞
❝ So, what’s the scam, ___ ? ❞
❝ Trust me. It calls for it. ❞
❝ You must go! Save yourself! ❞
❝ You don’t believe in curses? ❞
❝ Death is only the beginning. ❞
❝ Stupid superstitious bastard. ❞
❝ What do you think’s out there? ❞
❝ What do you suppose killed him? ❞
❝ I say, bloody good show, chaps! ❞
❝ Well, if you call that a kiss. ❞
❝ By the way, why did you kiss me? ❞
❝ Still angry about that kiss, huh? ❞
❝ Hey, look for bugs. I hate bugs. ❞
❝ This time I must go all the way. ❞
❝ What makes you so confident, Sir? ❞
❝ You’ll be dead when they do this. ❞
❝ I’ve just got one of those faces. ❞
❝ Have you no respect for the dead? ❞
❝ You’re with me on this one, right? ❞
❝ Could you tell me how to get there? ❞
❝ Question. Why doesn’t he like cats? ❞
❝ Apparently, he had a very good time? ❞
❝ We’re scholars, not treasure hunters. ❞
❝ I’m going to put you where you belong! ❞
❝ I have just the thing to cheer you up. ❞
❝ Where’d our smelly little friend get to? ❞
❝ I am so very sorry. It was an accident. ❞
❝ Oh, well. Guess she’s not a total loss. ❞
❝ Do you really think he’s going to show up? ❞
❝ I only gamble with my life, never my money. ❞
❝ You always did have more balls than brains. ❞
❝ Well, I guess we go home empty-handed again. ❞
❝ I will give you £100 to save this man’s life.❞
❝ Madame, I would pay £100 just to see him hang. ❞
❝ I lie to everybody. What makes you so special? ❞
❝ Compared to you, the other plagues were a joy! ❞
❝ You stole it from a drunk at the local casbah? ❞
❝ End of job. End of story. Contract terminated. ❞
❝ It’s why I came here. Sort of a life’s pursuit. ❞
❝ Well, whoever’s in here sure wasn’t getting out. ❞
❝ ____ , please, I’m really not in the mood for you. ❞
❝ Of course I can swim, if the occasion calls for it. ❞
❝ When we got there, all we found was sand and blood. ❞
❝ Oh, yeah. This just keeps getting better and better. ❞
❝ But how do we know that’s not a load of pig’s wallow? ❞
❝ They say I don’t have enough experience in the field. ❞
❝ Oh, look, for goodness’ sake, let’s be nice, children. ❞
❝ Smashing day for the start of an adventure, eh, ____ ? ❞
❝ The only thing that scares me, ___ , are your manners. ❞
❝ If we’re going to play together, we must learn to share. ❞
❝ Did I miss something? Are we… Are we going into battle? ❞
❝ As the Americans would say, it’s all fairy tales and hokum.❞
❝ Something about bringing his dead girlfriend back to life. ❞
❝ We’ve lost everything! All of our tools, all the equipment! ❞
❝ The secret compartment should be hidden somewhere inside here. ❞
❝ Let’s make sure we don’t bring anyone back from the dead then. ❞
❝ Yes, that is very romantic, but what has it got to do with me? ❞
❝ It is better to be the right hand of the devil than in his path. ❞
❝ Well, personally I think he’s filthy, rude, a complete scoundrel. ❞
❝ Filthy, rude, a complete scoundrel. Nothing to like there at all. ❞
❝ I was about to be hanged. It seemed like a good idea at the time. ❞
❝ Do you really want to know, or would you prefer to just shoot us? ❞
❝ Lady, there’s something out there. Something underneath that sand. ❞
❝ Oh, for heaven’s sake, girl, it wasn’t that good of a kiss, anyway. ❞
❝ If he turns me into a mummy, you’re the first one I’m coming after. ❞
❝ Rescue the damsel in distress, kill the bad guy, and save the world. ❞
❝ You can either tag along with me or you can stay here and try and save the world. ❞

Okay, people on both sides of this argument are currently wrong and are changing the definition of enemies. People are in the notes acting like enemies only happen when someone is pulling up to your house to threaten you. Which is not true. See the definitions below.
Tumblr media
As long as the characters are on opposite sides of a conflict or even on the same side of the conflict but are hostile towards one another they can and are defined as enemies. The “rivals” thing can in fact be enemies if they are hostile towards each other.
There has to be opposition or hostility for people to be enemies but people also seem to think the needed amount of opposition or hostility is much higher than it is.
If you claim that you love enemies to lovers but have to redefine what enemies means to strip it of all violence and conflict, then you don’t in fact love enemies to lovers and it’s ok to admit that you don’t like it and prefer a gentler setup of friends

PSA: Don't use Open Office
I keep seeing people recommending Open Office as an alternative to Word, and uh... look, it is, technically, an open source alternative to Word. And it can do a lot of what Word can, genuinely! But it is also an abandoned project that hasn't been updated in nine years, and there's an active fork of it which is still receiving updates, and that fork is called LibreOffice, and it's fantastic.
Seriously, if you think that your choices are either "grit your teeth and pay Microsoft for a subscription" or "support free software but have a kind of subpar office suite experience", I guarantee that it's because you're working with outdated information, or outdated software. Most people I know who have used the latest version of LibreOffice prefer it to Word. I even know a handful of people who prefer it to Scrivener.
Open Office was the original project, and so it has the most name recognition, and as far as I can tell, that's really the only reason people are still recommending it. It's kind of like if people were saying "hey, the iPhone 14 isn't your only smart phone option!" but then were only ever recommending the Samsung Galaxy S5 as an alternative. LibreOffice is literally a version of the same exact program as Open Office that's just newer and better – please don't get locked into using a worse tool just because the updated version of the program has a different name!

Would you read this book?
The four horsemen of the apocalypse from a different point of view
Just four people struggling to survive and find their place in the world
Probably takes place some kind of future dystopian world or magical dystopian world
I won’t lie this one is still very bare bones in my head

Would you read this book?
A peasant woman, her childhood bestfriend, a prince and his personal guard work to save their kingdom from destruction
No stereotypical romance for the woman
The prinse and his guard do fall in love. The guard is a man
The prince is full of puppy dog energy but he’s also a dumbass
A stable, thought out magic system with consequences and limits
The woman does not die to advance the male characters…she does go dark side with good reason though
Magical creature like unicorns
Please Reblog for a bigger sample size

Would you read this book?
A modern day story about a woman who’s boss was previously tangled up with some shady figures and it comes back to haunt Him
Bodyguard trope ftw!
The woman kills a man before her bodyguard can “save” her
The woman and her boss have a father daughter/found family type dynamic
While the body guard is there to keep her safe sometimes he know he needs to step back and let her shine
He sends her away to protect her and she comes back raging mad he dared to do that.
She is pure of heart but dumb of ass sometimes
Please reblog for a bigger sample size

It's always
"When will fanfic writers update their stories?"
And never
"Does this fanfic writer have adequate enrichment to engage in writing behaviours?"
Fanfiction writers (Scriptor fictus) are intelligent animals who need plenty of enrichment as well as encouragement! If they're stuck in poor conditions (e.g. have studies, work, have to actually write to have something written) then they require the proper enrichment to engage in more healthy behaviours, like writing. Remember, due to poor breeding and socialisation, over half of all fanfic writers suffer from low self confidence and executive dysfunction so take care of them!
Give your fanfic writers proper care. Fanfiction writers are a life long commitment.

Everytime I see posts like this I get filled with such profound sadness
Cause you know who has the same brainrot as you? The same unhinged feelings as you after you've read the fic? The person who always wants to scream about the fic with you?
THE PERSON WHO WROTE IT
I never used to leave comments but since I got into the habit of commenting on everything i enjoy it's been incredible. Especially when the author gets back to me about it and we get to have a discussion of what other ideas they had. One writer replied to my comment with a 5 paragraph essay detailing the Floorplan of the building the characters lived in and it was incredible
Anyways this is all to say that if you find a fic that just makes you want to scream from the rooftops, leave a comment saying that to the author and maybe they will join you and you can scream incoherently together

if you’re a white creator and your brown/black characters are always sassy, reckless, aggressive or cold and your white characters are always soft, demure, shy and introverted you should think about maybe why you did that

PSA: bot comments are taking over ao3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The above examples have been provided with the authors' permission to demonstrate what these look like.
Basic rundown:
They are all 3 sentences long
Perfect grammar, capitalization, and punctuation
Like absolutely flawless English teacher-style writing with only a single exclamation mark, ever
No mentions whatsoever of character names, settings, situations, or anything that could be tied to the story
The usernames may be identical to people who exist on ao3, but the name is not clickable, and no profile is associated with it EXCEPT when you directly search for that name. What this means: the comments come from an unregistered (not logged in) reader, bots scrape the site for real usernames, attach that to the comment, and post
Please spread the word about this so authors can filter comments and report them accordingly
There has been some speculation about why this is happening at all, and the best guess is that this is a feature that AI-training story-scraping tools are implementing to try and make their browsing traffic look legitimate

Hope readers are ready for authors to start removing their fics from whatever site they use so they can’t be stolen.
Hope readers are ready to have no fan content being made because they went and decided to be selfish idiots.
Hope readers either learn respect and how to engage with fic readers
Hope readers are ready to enter the find out stage of fuck around and find out.
yeah uh... don't do this :)

oh I wasn’t aware it was feeding the ai. I’ve inserted hundreds of fics into chatgpt for their continuation or for a different plot within the same context just for fun and out of curiosity… but I’ve never posted any of them…
Indeed, anything that is given to AI it can use later to draw from. That's why it doesn't matter if you post them or not as it has now access to those writers' texts without their permission.

So instead of giving feedback to writers so they’ll continue to write you guys decide to feed our work into some AI program to get what you want? Guess all my fics are going on lockdown now. Y’all brought this on yourselves smh. I am so beyond being nice about this anymore.
Also, some people from the replies all authors should block immediately because obviously they don’t care about people’s work.
Tumblr media
You don’t own it either dipshit.
Tumblr media
We wouldn’t publish fics of their work? Authors respect other authors. Please show me an author who’s forbidden someone to write fanfic of their stuff anyway. Bet you’ll say Anne rice won’t you? That toxic meatloaf doesn’t get respect from anyone because of how she handled things. She could have done it a lot better,
Tumblr media
Maybe this is a sign you should delete yourself from the internet. You don’t know if the author is going to finish it or not dumbass. You just decided they didn’t because it hadn’t been updated in a year, you know what that means? That means the author hasn’t gotten any interest in their fic. Show interest and the fic will be updated. Amazing how that works moron. Let’s see you put hours and hours into something you’re passionate about only to get no attention and then have people steal it to finish it because they decided you weren’t going to. Fuck off.
Hi,
It’s you friendly neighbor fanfic author here. In the light of this apparent new trend of people feeding unfinished fics to AI to get an “ending,” and some people even talking about “blanket permissions,” let me just say this:
I EXPLICITLY FORBID ANYONE TO FEED MY FICS TO AI. DUDE, THAT IS ABOUT THE LEAST RESPECTFUL THING YOU CAN DO. IF YOU DO IT, SHALL YOU BE EXCOMMUNICATED FROM YOUR FANDOM AND WALK ON LEGOS BAREFOOT TILL THE END OF DAYS.
That is my anti-permission.
Thank you for your attention.
