If you ever wondered why racism, xenophobia, antisemitism and every other form of prejudice based on the concept of otherness are evil and should be eradicated, this is exactly why. Because people with prejudices against another won’t hesitate to hurt them. Won’t hesitate to attack a child if it’s not the child of their people. Kill innocent, if those are not innocent of their people. Those vile concepts enable pointless slaughter of people, who didn’t do anything bad in the first place, and as we saw in the previous episode, prejudiced people will find or make any excuse to attack “the other”, even if they have to lie and scheme to do it in a way in which it won’t bother their own people too much. “Those monsters attacked humans, they were dangerous and needed to be punished for their crime” sounds like a logical reason why for a lot of people even today, in times when death penalty is mostly non-existent, and it’s scary how easily even now murder and genocide can be excused as “justice” and “fighting with evil”, so it’s not surprising that in the medieval fantasy it is even more horrible, and yet it is not something we can for sure say, we do not have to fear now, because those concepts exist, they incite hatred and make people do evil deeds for pointless causes, which look reasonable only on the surface, but are always there for the sole purpose of hurting, hunting and destroying “the other” out of bias alone. And that’s also why those concepts need to be eradicated while people who support them need to be forced to either change or stop spreading it, because even if we say that “words are just words and cannot hurt anybody”, it’s not very much true, as words spread the bias and hatred. They can hurt people in question even if the person who says them wouldn’t be able to hurt a fly. If they can’t, someone else always will. There is always someone else capable of hurting others and the only thing they need is an idea and the power to do it, and when those vile concepts are spread, they give them power and security to commit those crimes.

It would be understandable if Rimuru went on a rampage after what happened. And he is justified by what happened. He can do this. He can take revenge, but at the same time he knows that if he loses it, it will only prove their point. That it will make them win, because he will show them that what they believe is exactly how monsters are, that them being unable to be peaceful is true, and that’s also why Rimuru stopping himself from losing control is so powerful here. Because he knows that whatever he does now will affect all monster in the future, and he cannot let humans to get their way. He cannot let himself doom all generations of future monsters and subject them to even more scrutiny and hatred than now. At the same time though he also needs to grieve, and he knows that he cannot do that without losing control. What’s more it can also hurt his people if he does. So he uses the mask, and the mask helps him grieve in peace. But his pain is so great, that even the mask cannot take it, so it breaks in the form of a single tear. Showing us in a very poetic way how much Rimuru suffers at that moment. Even though we cannot see his face, and he can’t cry, we know that he cries inside.
